They do seem to have removed that option... that sucks. It has been there before. If you are unable to get anything else to work, you could remove the pins that transmit EDID information from your DVI-> VGA adapter: This should be a last-ditch resort, though. Your PC will have no idea what type of monitor is attached and you will be free to set whatever resolution you want. Huge CRTs connecting via VGA are usually why people do this. In case it's not clear, you should ONLY do this to the DVI-VGA adapter, not your GPU's output or your monitor's cable. Edit: Needle-nose pliers work well. I would google around for ways to force resolution first, but I guarantee this will work.

A stock 4890 is plenty of power for 1920x1200 anyway.

This really is a hardware question, although not the typical kind I guess. What do I need to ship a computer? Can I just box up the case and package it well and ship it out? I'm not really worried about much, but what about the HD being tossed around and the graphics card? When installed can they take that abuse? I don't really have the option of taking out parts and sending them separately, as the people I'm shipping it to would have no idea how to install them. Thanks!

The cooling looks a lot better than the stock and its worth the extra money. $194 isn't bad for one of the better cards on the market.

Oh boy, more heating questions: I'm aware 45-55c for an E8500 is hot, but during loads it stays at about 55-60c. I haven't seen it shot up higher than that range. I'll probably invest in better cooling later on, I'm not an OCER, but I don't want to kill my cpu. Are those temps way too hot?

I have an 8800gt and like all modern video cards it has two DVI outputs and one multipurpose output. I have this third output running component video to my HDTV. Currently I have to go into the nVidia control panel to switch between 2 monitors and one monitor and a HDTV. This is because, of course, nVidia doesn't officially support 3 displays from one card. What I'm wondering is if there's any kind of hack or workaround so that I can have all three connected at once. Even just being able to have the HDTV mirror my primary display would be fine, as I just use it to watch movies.

This is more software related I guess, but its relevant to my recent posts: I installed my new 4890 no problem, found the appropriate drivers and booted up Dragon Age (this happens with WoW too). I play for a few minutes and my comp freezes and goes into a BSOD. Prior to installing my new card I made sure to uninstall my nvidia drivers from the old 9800 but my motherboard is a P5N-D so that means I have onboard graphics probably interfering with my radeon card right? Anyways, I've tried uninstalling my radeon card's driver so I could get my computer to pick up the onboard graphics adaptor but no luck. I'm using Windows 7 too if that's relevant. The card itself is in pretty well and I don't think there are any problems with my installation. I googled the problem and found a topic on another forum that's identical to my issues except its sound card related..so I'm pretty sure its linked to my graphics card. Any advice or help? Edit- Apparently my p5n-d doesn't have onboard graphics, weird. Anyone, I just installed the card and I get the BSODs after playing games for several minutes. I have a question about networking actually. Is there a way I could get multiple wireless routers to talk to each other as in, having 1 router hooked up with a cable modem and just a wireless daisy chain from there. The model would be a SMC Barricade N. I've tried googling it but, I can't find much about the subject. Even a nudge in the right direction would be great for me. Thanks!

Quick question from somone who knows jack about computer fans and how they work. My case is dusty. If I blast the insides with a leaf blower, will the air forcing the fans to spin backwards at an alarming rate damage my cooling fans/graphics card? I figured I'd ask before I tried.

Breetai posted:Quick question from somone who knows jack about computer fans and how they work. I use a compressed air gun to blow out the dust in my case so I cannot see why it would be a problem. If you are blowing air directly at a fan you might want to hold the fan in place somehow with something to keep it from spinning (I use a straight piece of a coat-hanger) or with certain video card fans hold onto the center of the fan so it doesn't spin up. Also be sure to do it outside unless you want a dust cloud all over the room.

You won't hurt the fans by allowing them to spin. The bearing (or sleeve or whatever type of fan it is) won't be damaged by any spin RPM you can make it get to with a leafblower/canned air/vacuum etc... You'd have to get it up to like 10k RPM before it would possibly hurt the fan/housing. The fans on video cards like the 4890 for instance can power themselves up to ~3k-5k RPMs when in use so you're fine.

Dasho posted:I have a question about networking actually. Your best bet would be to flash new firmware to the device (DD-WRT or Tomato) which gives you a lot more control. You can then set the router (the one not hooked to the cable modem) to function as a repeater which makes it so that it can connect to the initial router as a wireless client and then rebroadcast. As far as the initial modem is concerned, you are just connecting another computer. Alternatively you could set it up as a bridge or repeater bridge allowing all computers to be on the same subnet. Things to google: repeater, bridge, dd-wrt, tomato firmware Also, you could try posting in this thread for more details.

I dunno if air wouldn't make them spin faster than normal - I dust out my fans form time to time and if you don't stop them from spinning then they can ramp up to levels that make a humourous 'whizzing' noise. Since you don't normally hear a noise like that even at 100% I'd guess they were being overdriven? Anyway, getting dust off the blades themselves only works if you hold the fan still so better to do that, in my opinion.

On a very old DFI motherboard, the small fan on the northbridge has died. Do I need to get some airflow onto that tiny heatsink before something fails? Or should the fact that this poor abused system has already gone without this fan spinning for a year show that the fan wasn't needed anyway? This is a friend's system that I just found out has been without an exhaust fan at all for god knows how long. He was asking me why the CPU fan was so loud. The poor CPU fan was the only fan in the entire case. No airflow at all.

My relatively new WD Blue 640gb drive just shat itself for no evident reason. I feel it spin, but it's not existing in the BIOS. I've tried a few different cables and sata ports. Since I've got nothing else to try, should I just pop off the board and check for broken solder welds, or just suck up the data loss and get a refund?

Yes, very common as your provider pushes software updates, however it should be rebooting itself rather than depending on you to do it. My cable modem reboots every Sunday morning at 3am. You should be able to run the onboard diagnostics software to determine whether the issue is related to the updates.

Can an overheated CPU cause problems with RAM? I got some new RAM and keep getting crashes even though memtest checks out. I noticed that my core temps get quite high; prime95 testing caused cpu to rise to 80+ degrees so my PC shut off. My new RAM requires a higher voltage so could that be the cause of the crash? I'm going to get a better heatsink/fan and some thermal paste anyway, but I'm hoping it'll solve the RAM issue.

No, unless your CPU overclock has a ridiculously high FSB. The voltage difference is probably part of it but I think you should reseat your heatsink.

I'm not overclocking, so FSB won't be affecting it. Definitely going to get a new heatsink anyway, even after cleaning out the inside of my PC it's still pretty hot at full load. I am wondering if I have some RAM compatibility issue though, I've heard the Asus P5N32-E SLIs don't like certain sticks, although mine are OCZ so would be surprising. Anyway going off on a tangent, thanks for the info.

I need a recommendation on a cooler for my evga GeForce 9800GT. Running newer games maxed out is giving me temps of 85c(MW2) - 100c(borderlands) and that is a little hotter then im happy with, even though most people say the card runs hot. Anything $50 or less would be fine, noise level isn't to much of an issue. I'm more concerned about bringing the temps down as much as possible, actively or passively.
