Additionally, the "open area" is a hard vacuum, and the screen is glass over half an inch thick, which together make a pretty good insulator, just like a thermos bottle. It's the electronics that get hot. The case of my 19" ViewSonic gets really damned hot if I keep it running all day, but the screen is cooler than room temperature. And if you opened up a CRT and put your hand right on the hot part, you might die. Lots of nasty high-voltage capacitors and whatnot back there.
