Hot on the heels of the Paramount new release announcement, Paramount just declared that on May 20, it will bring back into the retail pipeline the first of several waves of previously discontinued catalog titles. The May 20 wave includes:
Aeon Flux
Babel
Black Snake Moan
Dreamgirls
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Sleepy Hollow
The Untouchables
The Warriors

The upcoming BluRay of How the West Was Won looks awesome. While it's a 1962 film, they digitally restored it at 12K from the camera negatives. Cinerama is the highest resolution film format after IMAX, so expect a reference quality image.

Good to hear that Paramount is getting back on track and actually with some decent titles.

Warner Home Video has announced the 1985 Clint Eastwood directed and starred in film Pale Rider is coming to Blu-ray disc on August 26.

In the waning months of Universal Studios Home Entertainment's HD DVD era, the studio had standardized the use of Dolby TrueHD audio on almost all newly announced titles. This was in stark contrast to the early Universal HD DVD days when the appearance of Dolby TrueHD was overshadowed by the heavy use of Dolby Digital Plus lossy audio.

Times has certainly changed, and now Universal is gearing up to enter the Blu-ray Disc arena for the first time on July 22. With this move from HD DVD to Blu-ray support comes many questions, including how Universal will approach audio with the expanded room a BD-50 disc offers over a 30GB dual-layered HD DVD disc.

Although Universal is remaining tight-lipped on a lot of details surrounding their Blu-ray presence that wasn't included in the press release, they were kind enough to entertain our questions about their audio approach on Blu-ray. The simple answer may surprise you. At the least, it should delight you.

The first wave of Universal Blu-ray Disc titles on July 22 are all from the Mummy franchise and were all previously released on HD DVD: The Mummy, The Mummy Returns and The Scorpion King. All of these titles were published with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 audio tracks, but not Dolby TrueHD tracks.

Per Universal, all three Mummy films will include DTS-HD Master Lossless Audio. That's right, folks. Instead of lazily porting over what was already completed for HD DVD, Universal has heard your cries for lossless audio and is taking action.

Universal went on to tell us that the game plan moving forward is for DTS-HD Master Lossless to become the Blu-ray standard at the studio. Obviously there will be exceptions, but it looks like the majority of titles, and probably all new theatrical titles, will include DTS-HD.

We'll have more from Universal, including their position on U-Control appearing on Blu-ray, in the near future. Stay tuned!

http://www.themanroom.com/news/Excl...udio_Plans/2651

So does that mean we are also getting new transfers or only an audio upgrade?

If anyone has a Fry's near them, check your local ad. A bunch of recent Fox titles are on sale for 14.99, including I Robot, Independence Day, 28 Weeks Later, Rescue Dawn, Man on Fire, and a bunch of others. I ended up grabbing a few titles today, since these sales are a lot more rare these days.

Only if they come down significantly in price. The cheapest one is still 400 dollars and that's a lot of money to drop on a player. Especially knowing that you still have to get movies after you spend all that cash.

The two-disc of TWBB is the same thing, only three pages of flimsy paper. The hell?

Plus, the disc got scrathed sliding it out. That's about the shittiest packaging ever.

That's really utterly horrible. In comparison I don't think Blood Diamond is that bad. It's a horrible movie and it deserves a lovely cover. There Will Be Blood does not.

We've seen cover art changed before.. but anyway, making your own is good fun and I've lost count of how many re-done DVDs I have.

Full specs on upcoming Paramount BluRays (including There Will Be Blood): http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=67617

Looks like my prediction came true. I previously said I wouldn't be able to afford 1080p and BluRay until a silent film came out (thinking it would be at least 2020). TWBB has that short 1920s documentary The Story of Petroleum in 1080p as an extra. DVDTimes released the specs today. This morning, I got the call saying I've just been accepted for a graphic artist job (with a great starting salary) starting on Friday. Looks like I'll go HD by the end of the summer.

Awesome, I can finally replace the lovely flipper disc release of Bottle Rocket and maybe now I can convince myself to snag The Third Man. Good thing they decided to keep prices the same for SD and HD releases, 'cause with their pricing structure on some movies, that could get terribly expensive.

Now where's your initial Blu-ray slate Blue Underground? Your company name is perfect for a questionable pun.

(no really, I loving love that movie. It's beautiful and by the time it reaches the insano-flash-forward-intercutting I'm crying like a baby.)
