I'm looking for a new pair of closed ear headphones. I've been using these Sennheiser HD201s for about a year, and I love them, but the cord is shorting out really bad. I'd just buy another pair, but I can't help but wonder if there's anything in the same price range that's better. I'm looking to spend no more than $50, and hopefully closer to $30-40. I mostly listen to my iPod or my phone, and I mostly listen to heavily-overproduced 70's music (Electric Light Orchestra, Steely Dan, etc.)

Could always give the hd-201-IIs a shot. Entry level cans really are a mixed bag depending what you want, so your needs could be met with something simple, or more expensive if you'd rather do that.

Happens a lot. Everyone and their grandmother tells them that Beats are "the best headphones, like, ever" and they believe it; they convince themselves that what they hear must be wrong, it's different than everyone else. Well, I'm returning the 315s. They sound pretty close to the slc4's I had, but they are really, really uncomfortable no matter what tips I use (even with the comply tips i had before). The slc4's are still fitting good though, I think I just gotta look for a more normal shaped IEM. Bummer. e.klipsch x10's sure seem nice for ~150. Either way, not really sure I want to buy anything Monster branded on principle. Their beats line is one of the most hated headphones among enthusiasts. Their turbine line is one of the most liked IEMs among enthusiasts. I don't know if it says more about the sound quality of their stuff or about the logic behind hating popular products. My problem with the beats/turbines (or any other Monster product in the headphone world) is simply put that they look silly. However, there are many reports on head-fi about their turbines having bad build quality and quality control, with some people having sent them back in 2-3-4 times. I find those kinds of facts important.

Yep, yet they seem to have a poor build quality. I know I won't be trying them out, and part of the reason is just those reports of their turbine breaking. Besides, I've just bought the IE80 - I've got no need or reason to invest in turbines.

I'm currently using the AKG K701s paired with a Gilmore Lite amp. I still love them, but it's been my main setup at home for going on six years and I need to change things up a bit. My budget is about the same now as it was then for headphones, meaning I'd like to keep it under $300, but that's flexible if I decide not to get another amp. I'm considering the Grado 325s, Sennheiser 598s/650s (650s are a bit expensive, and I've read enough to suggest I might like the 598s just as much if not more), and well, that's about it for now. I have to do more research on the Beyerdynamic/Audio Technica offerings. Specifically my question is, what recommendations do you have for someone coming from the K701s looking for something a bit different? I'm also considering getting one of the O2 amps, as I bought the Gilmore Lite specifically to be paired with the K701s and I don't know how they will fare with anything else.

Well, I've got some heatshrink on my shure's now. Going to see if they're still comfortable to wear for an hour or two here, if not I guess I'll be ordering some x10's later today ![]() e. In practice, I think this will work good for just sitting at my computer, but there's no way to wrap the cable around the ear like they're meant to be worn now. I don't think they'll be very good to wear when I'm moving around or trying to wear a beanie like before. :/ Now to decide whether the x10 or ultimate ears triple fi 10 is more what I'm looking for. Or maybe a monster turbine. Hrm. e2. triple.fi 10s on the way, they look more like what I'm looking for compared to the x10's. Hopefully they fit better than the 315s did. Ugh, I'm in SA Goons steam chat and some guy wants cans that are good when out and about, and he says he doesn't care about looks, but he wants them for games and movies, so I suggest the DT770-Pro's because they have nice bass and a good soundstage and they don't leak like open cans, and all these people swarm me with me being an idiot for spending more than like 30 bucks on headphones since theres no difference and I'm being an Audiophile idiot. They aren't for everyone but if you can find them under $500 you will be able to sell them at no loss if you don't like them. They are by far the meanest and quickest headphones I've ever heard.

I felt this thread was out of my league but another goon said it wasn't, so I figured I might try asking. I'm not an expert on headphones by any means and my main usage is just music and gaming. Ever since my latest pair of headphones croaked, I've been searching around for a new set. My last set was the SteelSeries Siberia v2 which felt and sounded pretty good to me (and didn't hurt my head/ears wearing them for extended periods). Before that I had a Plantronics Gamecom 777 (something like that) headset that sounded nice enough but hurt my ears after a while. (I wouldn't mind going for plain old headphones if I could get a desktop microphone that didn't suck. However, I have a friend that has one and it's absolutely grating to hear him smashing on his keyboard when he talks. It's one of the reasons I gravitated towards headsets.) My budget is probably $100, though if it's a bit over I'd weigh and consider it. I'm looking for comfort and quality; I'm tired of dropping a somewhat significant amount of money on headphones that poo poo the bucket after a few months. I read through the OP but it's still kind of intimidating to me.

10 months or so of AKG K601 usage behind me now. They've become a lot more comfortable now that the padding has been used. I still like the clarity of the sound, it's very non-fatiguing to listen to them for up to six hours at a time. They complement the stereos very well.

My Sony MDR-7506s just crapped out on me, so I'm in the market for some new closed-ear phones. I thought the 7506s sounded pretty good, but that's likely because I have no experience with headphones and just haven't heard that many higher-end sets. I'm looking for something $150-ish but would be willing to go a little higher if there's something really worth the jump. Are the AKG K 271 MK IIs mentioned in the OP still a good choice? Whatever I get will be used exclusively for music. I listen to a pretty wide range of stuff, but there's a lot of rock and electronic music in my catalog, so punchy, clean bass is important. AKG's web site says the impedance on the K 271s is pretty low (55 ohms). Would an amplifier still be a good idea if I use them with my MP3 player? Of course, any other suggestions for awesome-sounding closed ear cans in that price range are welcome.

I'm going to add a 1/4th inch jack instead of the 1/8th they have stock. I'm thinking about doing an aluminum enclosure with thick lexan faceplates so you can see the guts on the inside, also the glow of the tiny LED. I'm not stoked on paying more to get it laser-etched to mark out functions, but oh well. Soldering can get tedious, but it'll be fun to use the finished product, especially since it cost less than the FiiO amps I have, and I know it'll be more suited to what I want for at home and work. Robots have kinda been my thing since high school, so I'm not anticipating any problems.

I'm looking for some new headphones, for work. I currently have a pair of Sennheiser PX-200's but the padding on one ear is starting to fray (though it's not too bad yet), and the pressure on my ears starts to annoy me after a few hours. I tried switching to my HD-555's, but those make too much noise for my coworkers so I can't use those. So, what I need: -Other people can't hear them -Comfortable to wear for basically an entire workday -Outside noise (people talking) is dampened -Audio quality As for price, I can spend quite a lot without it becoming totally ridiculous. (I'm in Europe, if that makes a difference for availability.) Any suggestions? I was looking at HD-280 and HD-380, but I'm reading quite some comments about the grip being too tight.

I've owned 280's and the grip is something you can't really judge without trying them out. If they're comfy, the sound quality was great for the money (they're like $55?)
