I read in the OP that 1080p is considered overkill for a 37" screen, but I am curious what the consensus is on this 37" Aquos. For $1300 it seems like a great deal, even if 1080p is unnecessary on a screen of that size. I will want to play video games on this, anyone know if the Aquos line has any known issues with lag?

Mr. Gone posted:Why are people so averse to buying DLPs? It seems like every time people come in asking what kind of set to buy, they're already locked into LCD or Plasma. I rarely see anyone considering a DLP. I have a Samsung HL-S5687W DLP and I couldn't be happier with the purchase. Hey, I am considering buying a HL-S5687W but have not been able to go down to a store yet to check one out in person. Are there any ambient light problems described by particle 9? DLP just gives so much more screen real estate for the price and I have heard good things about the Samsung line from others on SA.

I was looking at those Aquos' yesterday at the store, and the 42" screen is not nearly as bright as the 46" one. Contrast on the 42" was listed at 7000:1 compared to 10,000:1 on the 46". After much debating, I think I am going to buy a Samsung S5087W this week. I have done my research and seen the TV in person, and I think it is a good value. Anything I need to know before I pull the trigger on this?

pickitup13 posted:Am I stupid to buy a new HDTV from a place like circuit city? I've been checking out the return policy of sites like newegg and some don't even take returns. Even if they do, they require five dead pixels on LCD's in a lot of cases. It also takes time, money and a hell of a lot of effort to ship an HDTV back. I just feel like paying a couple hundred more dollars is worth being able to take it back to the store and get a replacement/refund if necessary. Not to mention that I've heard many reports of hdtv's being damaged during shipping and being DOA. So, stupid or not? Depends on what you are looking for. CC won't have the lowest price, but they are a B&M store so you can go pick it up yourself for the instant gratification factor, and the same goes for returns. You do also get a 30 days low price guarantee in case you see someone else local selling your TV for less. Lastly, consider promotional financing. I just purchased a Samsung HL-S5087W from CC this week. The instant gratification, not having to hang around home on a workday waiting for delivery, ease of return if necessary, and 18 months no interest financing all played a part in my choosing to buy there.

CubanMissile posted:I was considering buying the same TV from the same place. Is there any reason other than and extra HDMI input for me to wait for the HL-T5076S? So far I am less than impressed with the internal scaler, but I don't know if that is a crappy signal from Comcast analogue cable or if it is the tv itself. I am switching to dish network this weekend, I hope that the digital signal gives a better picture. I don't know if there is any real difference between the models as I have not researched it.

Fryed posted:Seconding the request for first hand info on this. The reviews mention the DNIe technology Samsung has in this set, which supposedly makes the pictures look better. Anyone know if this introduces any lag though? I'm thinking about getting an HDTV, and in particular I'd want any set I get to have minimal display lag with both SD and HD sources, but there doesn't seem to be any way to find out about that other than actually attempting to play Guitar Hero on every particular TV I'm interested in. The reviews of this LNS-4041D don't mention the Game Mode that I've heard exists on other Samsung sets, so I'm wondering if that will be a problem. I am not decided on whether or not DNIe makes a big difference or not, but supposedly it does create lag. The game mode disables DNIe and does other things to eliminate the lag, but I have not run into any problem running games on my wii in the normal mode. You can always turn it off if you want.

I set up my Xbox 360 and have it running in 720p, but the colors are absolutely terrible. Everything is washed out, and reds are completely non existent. I've been looking over the AVS forums for other people's video settings, but no one else seems to have this problem. Is my TV just a dud or something? Make sure you didn't accidentally plug the red audio cable into the red video spot. I'm serious.

What are you guys' thoughts? Thanks. Personally I went with the $7 ones from monoprice

Ultimate Mango posted:Do large 1080p sets really demonstrate a marked improvement over 1080i? For that size you will be looking at either a projector or DLP like you say. Conventional wisdom in this thread seems to be that for screens above 50" you should be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 720p. I have no experience with projectors so I cannot comment on their quality, but I don't recall ever seeing any 1080p projectors (but then again I have never looked).

For the rest of my posts I'll just be referring to DLP. My 50" Samsung DLP is 16" deep. More than a flat panel but far less than a CRT. Bulb life is supposed to be 3-4 years with normal use for this TV. There is no screen door effect on the newer model DLP's.

King Moo posted:I just bought the Samsung HLT-46", which I think is the most current of the DLPs, and it seems perfectly fine for games. If there is any lag, I don't notice it. Two things I dont like about the screen already is the screen door effect. This set has it big time, enough to the point where Im wondering if I should have gone with LCD. The other is SDTV picture, which is outrageously horrible. I dont watch much tv, but when I do, it'll really suck. Weird, I have the HLS 50" (one generation back from yours) and there is no SDE. Also, re: the SDTV issue trust me you will get used to it after a couple of weeks. No matter what kind of tv you get SD will always look like rear end because you are used to seeing it on a smaller CRT monitor. If you look back a few pages you will see me saying the same thing and swearing I will return the tv for something smaller because it looks so bad, and now three months later I hardly notice it at all even when I look for it.
