So I'm looking to get a wall mounted TV; I've got a 32" Sony CRT, which is pretty nice (and weights 37 tons), but I'm thinking 46" would be a lot better for the room. Am I insane to wait a bit for the ln46a950 to come down in price? I'm not in a huge hurry, but I also don't want to just be flushing money away. I saw a 950 and was pretty blown away. My concern is that I'll buy a perfectly nice 650, and then 1-2 years from now wish that I had waited a bit.

Can someone explain to me the difference between the 950 series Samsungs and the new LED LCD tv's (like the UN46B7000)? It sounds like the now obsolete 950's were back lit and the new ones are lit from the side somehow, but other than comparing the contrast ratios I can't figure out what the pros and cons between them would be. I'd rather not drive the 70 miles it would take to get to a store that actually carries them to look if its just marketing hype. I have seen an LN46A950 in person before and it was glorious.

Yep, and I see the 950 has been marked down to some great prices at places clearing them out. A month ago I saw them for $3500 at Best Buy, now they're clearing them out at $2500 which a great deal compared to current models. I see they're still selling the 850 which is inferior in many ways for $3199. (CDN pricing)

Thanks for the info! It seemed like the 950 would be better than the newer, thinner models, especially because I don't particularly care how thin it is. Now I just need to find a place closing them out... All I am seeing online is still 3k plus, and the Best Buy's and such in Maine have never carried them as far as I can tell.

Is there an easy way to know which LED LCD's are back lit and which are side lit? Maybe I'm just dumb, but Samsung's website does not seem to be helping me. Is it still just the discontinued a950's that are back lit?

So I came into a bonus at work, and this coincides with my TV starting to die (Sony 32" Triniton WEGA from way back). Viewing distance would be about 10' if I mounted the TV on the wall, instead of on the stand the current TV is on. 46" seems plenty for that distance to me, but my wife leans towards something a bit bigger. She wants to go for an LCD due to the power use vs. plasma. Would we really notice that much?

It seems like the thread consensus for this would be an LN52B750 or LN55B650 which are both about 2k. when we were at Best Buy last night looking at these TV's I could not help but notice that the 6000 series in a 55" was about $100 more (7100 a couple hundred more than that, with the 8000 being $2900). The LED LCD's defiantly looked better in the store, but I do not know how much of that is due lack of calibration etc.

I had planned on spending two grand or so on a TV, but I have the nagging feelings that I would be happier saving up a bit more and getting an LED model, and perhaps I should wait a few months and see what comes out for the Christmas season/wait for a better sale. I have read some unhappy reviews about the edge-lit LED's, but for back-lit models the choices seem to be paying top dollar for an A950 series or getting a less reputable brand.

Dang, that sounds like a great TV from the reviews and would be right in the price range we want. Are there any downsides to plasma besides the conditioning period? I've heard that some times they don't do well in well lit rooms, but I'm not sure how well lit are we talking about. Our living room has a lot of windows, but the TV would never be hit be direct light or anything.

As I already stated, they're amazing. As long as you're not watching a TON of 4x3 content, then image retention isn't an issue.

I'm sorry I'm such a n00b, but 4x3 content would be standard def channels on my cable box?

Typically when watching SDTV on a wider HDTV screen, black bars are put on each side to avoid stretching the picture out and making everyone look like a linebacker. If you watch a lot of SDTV with black bars then over time the phosphors in the center of the plasma display will wear out more quickly than the ones on the outside, and you will wind up with a screen of uneven brightness.

This worries me because Time Warner in my area lacks HD versions of maybe half the stations we actually watch. Hmmm, perhaps it is time to look into a dish.

Anyone seen a Panasonic G10 and a V10? Opinions on just how superior the V10 is to the G10? I can "afford" the V10, but I just don't want to go throwing ~$500 away either.

I drove for 90 minutes today to do just this (well, and also compare to LED Samsungs). This thread led me to believe that the V10 is awesome, and they weren't kidding. My wife thought I was crazy to drag her all over to look at TV's but after an hour of considering different sets, we are going to be getting the V10. The G10 we saw in the 50" version, and it was a very nice looking tv. The picture on the V10 was just awesome though. The sales guy was trying to steer us to a 50" KURO display set they had on clearance for $2250, but we couldn't see any advantage in the picture over the V10 watching TDK on blueray. Also, I was a little worried about a sales floor tv, even if it is a KURO. I was very surprised that the difference between the better plasmas and the Samsung LED LCD's was so noticeable. It appeared to me that the colors on the LED really wash out in comparison if you are even a little off angle. Anyway, anecdotal evidence, but I would say that the G10 was probably our second choice, but we will be buying the P50V10. We had to hit the Magnolia area of a Bestbuy in the next state to see a V10, but I think it was worth it. Too bad Bestbuy's price for the TV is $400 more than amazon ($1780 is the best price I can find for this so far). I'd love to support them letting me look at TV's but that much.

It's defiantly worth a look. My wife doesn't usually care about technology stuff, but after viewing a bunch of TV's the V10 is now the only one she's willing to consider. The G10 is really nice, but the V10...

That's about $500 less than they are listing that TV atm... anything you can share about how you got such a great price?

Your post is blowing my mind a little. I did not realize that there was anyone still at Bestbuy's working on commission let alone anyone able to negotiate on price. Is that just a Magnolia thing? Any idea how I find out what the cost is for a certain TV? We are looking for the 50" version of the V10. They list it at $2099. Amazon has it for $1800 with free shipping, so there must still be money to be made at that price.

So I went back to the Magnolia center and negotiated a good price on a P50V10, only to find out that they were out of stock. The manager was not able to come up with any info about when they would get more because the warehouses she orders from are also out. Will I end up hating myself later if I just get the G10 instead?

Do you want "VieraCast?" I think that's the only substantial upgrade.

Actually, the G10 has that. The upgrades as I understand them are:
1) fancier pane of glass; better UV filter for less glare they say, not sure how you measure that
2) extra tuning options (you can have settings for day, and a different set for night)
3) digital cinema color; which supposedly makes the colors more cinema-like when you are watching movies

I asked this question a few pages ago. I was told the V10 is noticeably better than the G10...

Ya, the question isn't so much is it better, but how much is that worth. The cheapest I could find for the P50V10 that actually had it in stock was ~$1900. I picked up the P50G10, which was our second choice, for $1200. At the end of the day, I would have preferred the V10, but the G10 is a pretty nice TV. I'm sorry if my second question did not come across quite right, I was trying to confirm that there wasn't something major I was missing between the two sets that would cause me to cry later. I am curious how much of the difference I could notice between the two sets was the calibration though. I assume they were both on the default, but I did not check. In the store I was able to see them both in, the V10 still did look a little better, but I was increasingly not able to justify that difference being worth $700.

If you are spending that much dime on a 50" you would have been insane not to go with a kuro anyways.

Have you seen a Kuro for cheap? Most of them that I've seen are still 3k+, even at 50". A saw a 50" floor model for $2250, but it had been at the store for at least two years. It didn't seem like a good idea.

Any suggestions that I might find at one of these retailers?

I got a P50G10 Panasonic plasma TV at BB last week for $1200. One week in, I am very, very happy. Picture wise, I felt like I was getting a lot more for my money with a plasma than I would have with an LCD, but obviously you may feel differently about the technologies.

How much can you expect someone at BB to be able to take off for TVs if you're doing a good job negotiating? What's a "good" deal?

I asked them to price match the best price from Amazon, which they said they couldn't do, but they ended up selling it to me for less ($1150+110 shipping on Amazon, I walked out with the TV for $1200; they had it marked at $1399). The only downside I found to this was how hard they tried to pitch me on 'pro calibration' and their wacky insurance plan. It's amazing how fast a sales guy can go from assuring you that burn in is a thing of the past, especially for Panasonics, to trying to sell you burn in protection for $200. Hilariously, someone had reset the TV's they had set up to demonstrate how much better the calibration makes your TV and it took the sales guy a minute to realize it. Why yes, I sure do see a huge difference between these identical TV's using identical settings....

So, a few weeks in, I'm still totally loving the picture on my G10. The one problem we have is that on some HD channels (TW Cable through HDMI), the sound is totally hosed up. I notice it with most of the football games especially, the announcers will be very muted, while there is a lot of dull crowd noise. I'm thinking that this is the penalty of using the TV speakers but maybe I have the settings messed up or something? Everything is on default, sound wise.

Best Buy won't price match online stores.

The BestBuy people at the Magnolia center I got my G10 at disagree. They price matched Amazon and said that was the policy, if it was 'in stock' at that price. No idea if that's a company wide policy, but I was just happy to pay less so I didn't ask many more questions. I was dealing with the manager, so I don't think it was someone slipping something by.
