Captain Hilarious: Jan 3, 2006; hello what

I'm looking to replace my TV and ancient stereo in the near future. Is it best to have everything connected to some sort of AV receiver, which then outputs video to the TV, or is it best to have everything connected to the TV which outputs audio to some kind of amp/stereo?
