Awesome timing on that EXO-700. I had pretty much settled on that as my replacement helmet, and I'll gladly take a third-choice paintjob for $100 off.

This is one area where it's so nice to be so completely, boringly average. Every piece of gear fits me, every motorcycle is just the right size and I can fit in any car with no problems

I just picked up a Shoei X-11 E-Boz TC2 helmet at motorcycle closeouts.com for $369.99. Regardless of what you think of the design ( I happen to like it ), an X-11 for $370 is a smoking deal. You could pay someone to do a vinyl wrap or paint it if you didn't want to do it yourself and still come out cheaper than any other place offers an X-11.

Are there any cautions against using a dirt helmet on the street? I was thinking of picking one up for the supermoto excursions, but they tend to be so cheap that I'm wondering if they're constructed differently/not meant for street use. I've seen supermoto-specific "dirt style" helmets, but they sell for upwards of $400.

I'm thinking of buying a 3/4 helmet with a face shield rather than a full helmet as I've found I get a little tense in a full helmet. Is this a really bad idea? Should I just suck it up and get used to having a full helmet on? This will be for my MSF, because I know one of the instructors, and he told me all they have is full helmets to use if you don't have your own, and I don't want me being tense in the full helmet loving up my MSF test.

How is the EXO-700 compared to an HJC CL-15? Are the head shapes and sizing comparable? Will it fit glasses?

sectoidman posted:How is the EXO-700 compared to an HJC CL-15? Are the head shapes and sizing comparable? Will it fit glasses? The CL-15 sizing is a bit larger than the EXO-700. My HJC is definitely a little looser than the Scorpion and they're both larges. The head shapes are similar if not identical, and you may need to get thinner cheek pads for the Scorpion (I do, but they're not so uncomfortable that I have problems wearing as is). I've tried putting glasses on and they mostly fit, but you'd probably need narrower ones than I have. All said, I like the Scorpion a bit better.

Try on a bunch of different full-face helmets, too - some will have big enough eye ports that you won't even see that it's on, which might help you. Having just wrecked and apparently slamming my face on the ground/sliding my face across the pavement - in a full face, so no damage to my pretty mug - I really, really have to discourage you from wearing a open helmet.

My EXO-700 fits my glasses fairly well, they're a little tight going into the helmet, but once they're in there, it holds them in place quite well, without any discomfort. I wear frames that are just about as wide as my head.

^^ EDIT: NVM, not the jacket I thought it was. sectoidman posted:How is the EXO-700 compared to an HJC CL-15? Are the head shapes and sizing comparable? Will it fit glasses? I also own both. Started with the CL-15, went to an EXO-700. Used both for about a year. the CL-15 got... uninhabitable in that time. Ton's of noise, the pads stiffened up, if I turn my head to look over my shoulder at speed the visor cracks open. I'm on my 2nd EXO-700 and have none of these problems. I much prefer the scorpion. Better cheek pads, the breath guard, better vents, much nicer feel- especially over time. I just picked one up on new-enough clearance for $109, so deals can be found (though the first time I bought it it was around $300 from a dealer)

I got a CL-15 for about $115 from a local shop as well. I love the way the helmet fits, it is pretty comfortable. The only complaint I have is the left (while wearing it) side lock mechanism for the visor sucks. I've had the visor pop out of that side while riding on a few occasions. One of my riding buddies has a CL-15 as well and had the same problem with the visor lock.

I recently bought a Fieldsheer Razor jacket: http://www.newenough.com/protective...cle_jacket.html The shoulder armour stays in place very well, but the elbow armour moves around a fair bit unless I wear long sleeves and keep the liner in - fine for winter but will probably be a problem in spring (in Australia). There seems to be a lot of room in the sleeves and torso (especially at the back), will this be a problem? edit: I got the smallest size (40). Chest and shoulders seem fine. Also the forearm is a bit loose near the wrist. tzam fucked around with this message at Jul 23, 2009 around 05:43 |

Rocket gear is pretty solid, in my experience. I own 2 different Rocket jackets and though I haven't crashed in them (and I hope it stays that way), I feel pretty safe in mine. This jacket in particular though has no venting, which seriously limits its warm weather usefulness and that removable sleeve thing is just pure dumb. I don't know where you live or what kind of heat you have to deal with, but you can do better than this jacket. Look for something with zipper vents and non-removable sleeves.

Never had this with my CL-15, either; the only time the visor popped out on me was when it wasn't seated right to begin wtih. And you can get replacement mechanisms for like $15 if you are so inclined. I had my CL-15 for nearly 2 years before my wreck, and in that time everything held up nicely but the cushy padding inside did... become less cushy. And on the noise: I also have an HJC CS-R1, got it for like $61 from newenough to have as a spare/passenger helmet, and it's noticeably quieter than my CL-15 was, although that might be because all the padding is still thick and puffy.

Arai has different molds for different heads. I don't have a big head, and the Vector fits me great (with a tighter than standard set of cheekpads). They're highly customizable, I'd suggest getting fitted by an Arai dude if you're considering them (like I am because they're awesome and I want one really badly).

My HJC CL-15 has developed a problem where the right side of the visor sticks really badly in the closed position. Trying to open it lifts the helmet off my head. I have to pry it open by sticking my fingers between the chin bar and the visor. It's the only problem I've had in 4 years. I think I'm going to just replace the mechanism as I can't really afford a new helmet at the moment.

I think I'm going to just replace the mechanism as I can't really afford a new helmet at the moment. Hah, CL is still tight enough (only 1,000 miles with it) that my 5 o'clock shadow creates enough friction it's hard to get off. I think I'd completely snap off the visor well before it pulled the helmet off my head... I haven't heard much talk about in helmet speakers/headphones in here yet. I've tried a couple of different things: Sure E2C's (I've worn them for years, but they really still aren't comfortable) Sennheiser CX300's (Don't stay in well enough, and any break in seal results in almost no sound) iPod headphones (painful) Currently I just have the iPod headphones routed up through the liner, and just sitting near my ears in the recess for the strap. I clip my iPod Nano to the bottom edge of my helmet, and only like 1 inch of wire shows. This is a really no-fuss setup, but since they're not actually in my ears, even at full volume it's drown out by 40mph. What kind of volume do you get with in helmet speakers in the $40-50 range? I've been thinking about wearing earplugs when I'm not work commuting (5 minutes) so I'm not just overpowering loud noises with louder music. I have a heaphone amp I've built into a zippo tin, but I'd prefer to not have to use it: the Nano clipped to the helmet is just so elegant...

The Senns are the headphones I use at work, and are perfect for that application. I do have access to very similarly designed Creative/Sharp/whatever that I can mess with fitment...
