My 8 year old son and I watched Smash Labs last night. It really is as horrible as you all make it out to be. Here are some of the questions he asked me during the show. "Why don't they just ask Volvo to find out about car crashes?" "Did these guys really go to college?" "What's wrong with that girls teeth?" "Why would anyone build a road like that?" "Why are they always running in a line?" "I don't understand the bus thing. Are they expecting everyone to ride a bus?"

Electric Hobo posted:Has anyone else that watches astronomy programs on the Science Channel (and now the History Channel is showing some) noticed that a good portion of those programs are now about how OH MY GOD THE SUN IS GOING TO KILL US ALL (in a few billion years)? Or asteroids are going to get us, or comets, or the big rip, or Nemesis (easily the silliest), or a dozen other things that will supposedly kill us all but will in reality probably never happen or won't happen for millions of years. It's getting pretty annoying, I wish they'd cut the dramatic crap and do more programs on black holes and gamma ray bursts and string theory. At least the Science Channel is showing Cosmos now, Carl Sagan's voice is like an aural hug. I've been watching those and it hasn't really annoyed me. Those shows have always done that whether its volcanos, spiders, supernovas, or tsunamis and you just have to ignore it. I've got all those channels in HiDef now and those shows look so amazing that I'm willing to put up with it. Even the old Cosmos series looks awesome because they've redone all the graphics. Master Blasters is kind of "eh" for me. Its like a 2nd generation Junkyard wars with rockets if that's your thing.

max4me posted:any one catch smash lab? What if it rained? This idea wasn't as insanely stupid as the Wile E. Coyote/Acme rocket brakes, but it was still pretty bad. I watch just to make fun of it anymore. This has to be one of the worst TV shows of all time. It should be enough of a reason for MST3K to come out of retirement.

In my opinion, rockets on the highway are way more dangerous to the public than some sand pits. Federal law requires some sort of battery-powered electrical brakes or hydraulic surge brakes to be installed as an emergency breakaway system. Both types have been used for decades, are simple, and quite reliable. When I was an automotive engineer I worked on motors and gears instead of brakes, but I'm fairly certain that the chances of all braking systems failing simultaneously are very low and even if they did -- the resulting wreck would probably be less destruction than having rockets involved. The idea for this week was to stop bank robbers by creating huge sand pits around banks and blowing air through the sand. This will create "fluidized sand" and trap the thieves.

The Human Crouton posted:I made mine up, but the fact that you believed that it was a real topic for the show shows just how retarded this show is, and how little faith we have in it. Next week, they are going to see if they can evolve into salamanders by going Warp 10 with a solar-powered steamboat.

ToastyPotato posted:I remember it. They still occasionally give it on the Science Channel I think. I don't remember the name, but your description is right on. One of the main guys is the dude that helps the Mythbusters with all of their rocket related myths. Its Master Blasters. Its not a bad show, but all you really need is the last 5 minutes for the launch. Everything before that is a circle jerk and all I see is a scruffy goatee on the screen jabbering away.

The following is on the wikipedia page for Smash Lab. wikipedia posted:Despite a very negative response to the show from Discovery Viewers a second series has been comissioned from Darlow Smithson (the UK based production company). This show isn't even worth watching for the comedy anymore. Its just painful. I wonder if they use dartboards or spinning wheels to match up the "problems" and "solutions".

McSpanky posted:I'd love to see Mike Rowe filing reports at an insurance company and being like "remember that one time I was diving in poisonous human waste? Yeah, I kind of miss that now." Mike Rowe should take over the Tonight Show or something. I really don't know what he could end up doing, but the guy has so much potential.

Aero737 posted:About a month back before new episodes of Man vs Wild, Mythbusters, and Dirty Jobs started part of their commercial was for a show called "When Man Left Earth". Did that get canned or is it still coming? I just saw a promo for it last night and it looks pretty amazing. Tons of never before seen NASA footage in HD. Its going to start on June 8.

I saw a preview for the new Smash Lab and it isn't getting any better. In an attempt to "save" a car that is falling off a cliff, they have attached very large air bladders to the outside of the car with steel reinforcing rods that will break off and kill the occupants more quickly. It appears the show is still pretentious and trying to take itself seriously. I looked at the Discovery web site and it looks like they replaced a couple of the actors with new guys, but they kept Dumb Girl and Dipshit With The Hair. We now have The Reverend and The Artisan instead of the preferable The Roadrunner and The Coyote. There's a lot of bad shows, but this one actively makes me despise it.
