The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades

500kpps at 64 bytes would probably explode an ASA, based on what I'm seeing.

So here's some fun stuff:

I spun up a Palo Alto configuration on a PA500 we had lying around, and while it also suffered interface overruns, it was better! 50-60% overruns turned into ~15%. I don't know how the platforms are architecturally different at that level, and I have no knowledge of PA rx buffer design, but it's an interesting thing to notice.

Bear in mind, this is a PA500 (spec sheet 7,500 new conn/sec, 64k max sessions) versus a ASA5515X, which is rated significantly higher.

Also, sold my Cisco stock today. Got in at $17, got out at $23.83. I will use my proceeds to buy a '64 Fender Jazzmaster!

I'm almost tempted to setup a FreeBSD server with top shelf Xeons and a high-performance 10GbE NIC like a Solarflare 6122 to see what performance I can get from pf.

IIRC, pf is still single-threaded, though there's someone working on a patch to make it multithreaded. That's not to say it performs poorly, but I'd go for more GHz over more cores when choosing a CPU.

Also I hear the Chelsio cards have the best BSD support.

Ah, the security-through-obscurity bullshit. "If someone breaks into your network, they won't know where they are!" The same could be said for your replacement when you're hit by a bus and your dumb rear end didn't do your due diligence with Visio.

On the other hand, that would be a great weed-out interview question for an enterprise architect. "Describe to me your ideal device naming convention." At first mention of The Simpsons, LoTR, Star Trek, or Dr. Who, it's probably time to look elsewhere.

One time I was told that I can't break up the subnets and implement layer 3 switching due to "the next guy might now know how to work on it".

Arista makes some really killer switches. The 'show donkeys' command appears to be an easter egg.
