And he's apparently one-upping actual Broadside, since they've apparently said it's a Quad-changer. I'm guessing Plane, Robot, Aircraft Carrier (ff you look closely at all the pictures so far, you can see how it could flip upside down and the wing assembly swung around to form the front of the deck), and a design they showed off years ago in silhouette that looks a bit like the SDF Macross.

Not really, just push them up and they'll pop into place. I'm more terrified when I pop the limbs on and off Bruticus. Seems like one of those side panels that holds on to the nubs is just going to snap off eventually.

Look, it's time we all admit that Hasbro does not serve us, does not cater to us, and except for in a small way, does not market to us.

They're a mass-market toy company. They sell toys for infants, toddlers, tweens, pre-teens, teens...TFs, to them, is another property to manage. The fanbase is great to keep interest alive between major events (movies, new series), and provides them a base level of income to keep the line viable. But they're not gonna bend over backwards for you. They're not going to design, test, market and ship an 80 dollar Superion with the complexity and G1-ness of this third party stuff. It's not economical for them.

I'm appreciative enough that we get the occasional Masterpiece design or import out of them. I don't expect much more than that, or maybe a good couple of Classics figs every now and then. Anyone expecting more, then getting ANGRY AT HASBLOW is just bringing it on themselves.

Really, now that 3rd party stuff has stepped up their game so tremendously, it means we have the best of all possible worlds. I'd love it if their stuff was as cheap as mass-market toy prices, but I'd love lots of other unrealistic stuff to happen too. If you don't appreciate how well TF fans have it right now, talk to people who paid out the rear end to import Car Robots toys (raises hand) because they never thought they could get them over here. Or people who were fans from the very 1984 start (raises hand), and remember the dead period of the early 90s.

Almost without fail, every single year it gets better and better for people in this fandom. It'd be nice if eventually they ran out of things to complain about.

TFCon is so much better than BotCon. It's so much more of a social experience whereas BotCon is very impersonal. I've made a bunch of friends in just 2 days. Hoopala and General Tekno are wicked cool. I'm going to try and make this a yearly thing.

Also the FOC Generations figures suck except for Shockwave, buy Shockwave.

And Warbot Heartmaster is tits and everyone has one, and I'm really regretting not picking one up. And Maketoy Giant and Hexatron are loving gorgeous in person and I need to have them yesterday. Hegemon is also really really nice in hand, but sadly I couldn't find one for sale.

Also FOC Bruticus looks much better in person, notably Onslaught, but if you're one of those people paying $250 for the SDCC set, you're a loving idiot who likes throwing money away.

Anyway I got Steelcore, the dude is AWESOME. He has all the chunkiness and solidness I love about early FP stuff but in a nice Voyager-size shell, he's like Protector without the disadvantage of being connected to a lovely Generations toy.

I also snagged PRID Dead End for 14 from a friend and ROTF Lockdown for 15 from a table. BOTH are absolutely bonkers, love 'em both. Lockdown has the most expressive NECK I've ever seen on a toy, it's insane. Oh boy, I went a little hog wild.

There's the aforementioned FOC Shockwave, and then I got Shadowbat. A lot of people loathe the figure, but he's actually pretty cool if you think of him as an accessory set rather than classics Ratbat.

15 minutes into the dealer room, I snagged a G1 Scorponok with the helmet and head for an incredible $75, and an Energon Shockblast for $30 at the same table. I found a BW Metals TM1 Megatron, which I had been looking for for years to no avail to replace my sad, broken TM1 Megs. I hemmed and hawed for a bit, and the guy decided to give it to me with $20 off.

Also grabbed Cybertron Megatron, G1 Venom, G1 Broadside, Fangry, Siren, G2 Rapido, crossovers Hulk tank, and the KO Headmaster head set. Phew.

Yeah, I should probably avoid the dealer room today.

No. As I said last time it was asked: There are no more. There were never any more. I don't know...if show (or game I suppose) accuracy is at the top of your list, there's a lot worse things to spend that money on. If it's not though, you're 100% correct. It's a good toy and definitely not deserving of most of the negative comments I've seen (gangly? and which combiners are well-proportioned?), but it's basically still 5 FOC deluxes in a big silly box. The things I look for in a transformer toy are, in this order:

1. Quality of Design/Engineering (innovative transformation, smooth transformation, posable, well-sculpted)
2. Quality Materials
3. Good Paint Apps
4. Interesting Character

Taken on their own, each Combaticon gets pretty low marks on all but the last point. I don't regret buying it, but I'm already getting the sense that I'll sell it later on when I have the option of settling for the retail version. I can't shake the feeling that the designers just didn't give a poo poo aside from making sure the combination gimmick worked. I mean yeah, each dude has a bot mode, a vehicle mode, and a limb mode. But none of those transformations are interesting, and none of the end results are that great (except maybe the combined mode).

If I can sell this thing for some G1 Scorponok money a little later on, then so be it. All the FOC toys are just too goddam small*, especially Shockwave, but at least Shockwave seems like he was designed by someone who was excited to go to work in the morning.

I guess what I'm saying is that no one's an idiot for spending their money on the TFs they want. At least in the "I'm pretty sure everyone in this thread is guilty" sense. But I would urge anyone on the fence about SDCC Bruticus to carefully examine what you really want in a TF before taking the plunge.

*Again, except for Swindle, who looks like he could take down any other FOC bot with one hand tied behind his back. SO WEIRD.
