Alexandra, Alex to her friends, was a country girl through and through. Her family was poor, a few generations removed from dust bowl farmers who moved out west to what they though were greener pastures. Her great grandparents moved to the farming areas surrounding Modesto, Ca and lived there ever since. Her dad taught her all he knew about the surrounding country before he left for the first gulf war. They hiked, shot tin cans off a fence and talked about her studies. He didn’t come back, and now, years later, she couldn’t remember his face anymore. Her grandmother provided love and encouragement but it wasn’t the same.

Years later she went to the University of Chicago to study zoology on a full ride scholarship. For once being smart and poor got her somewhere besides being stuck in a locker. She bucked down and passed all her classes with with flying colors, heck, she even got an internship assisting her professor in his project tracking coyotes in the Mojave. Camping under the moon and listening to the sounds of the night changed her. Professor Wright was like a second father to her, he taught her the secrets of tracking animals, the sounds each bird made in the morning and how to disguise your scent and shape from their quarry. Her favorite parts of those nights were the most unscientific, when Professor Wright regaled them with stories about coyotes he had studied, research in wild places and the best ways to get grants. It was like being a kid and going camping with her dad again. That summer she fell in love with her chosen area of study and decided to make it her life.

To her delight, when the project ended Professor Wright helped her get into graduate school and she eventually got the Master’s degree in zoology . She planned on heading back to the Mojave and studying her coyotes once again, however, for the sake of money she took a job in West Virginia, studying the migratory pattens of several species of animals that summered in the forest. When the first news of cerebrosus struck she was deep in the woods, living in a fire observation tower.

She decided to stick to solitude until things died down a little-after all, how long could it last? The first year she kept busy, going from outpost to abandoned outpost, grabbing any food she could get. Her company pick-up wasn't much, but it sure helped her in those first few months. She made occasional forays into smaller towns and didn't like what she saw. Eyeless, soulless things that used to be people wandering around. Alex lived alright for that year, she was lonely but it was still the wilds that she loved. And then it changed. It didn't happen all at once, but one day the change that the world went through became apparent even to her. It was like seeing through a dark mirror, the animals changed, some even became warped aberrations. And those sounds she heard at night seemed to be getting ever closer to her hideout. This was not her forest anymore, it was theirs, it belonged to nightmares now. She drove out of the park carefully, and got closer to the burned out wreck of civilization. She skirted main cities and stuck to country roads. A few times she saw survivors, if they could be called that, killing and savaging others unlucky enough to get in their sights. So Alex ran, hid and went to ground, watching and waiting as the world sunk further into hell. Everyone else could kill each other, but she would stay out of it.

Alex used to the world as a fascinating place before cerebrosus, and still does to some extent. If she catches wind of an animal doing something clever or unusual her prior enthusiasm returns. Her time alone has damaged her previously level nature and left her a bit jaded. At first Alex is a bit wary of any new person she comes across and tends to think her way is the best, after all she has survived this long by listening to her instincts! She eventually warms up but this can take quite a long time. She wears her heart on her sleeve most of the time and has never been good about keeping her thoughts to herself. Despite the state of the world Alex has retained a fondness for books and always has a few in her backpack. If she gets the chance to loot a library or bookstore she quickly takes it.

Alex has tried to keep her hair quite short and generally tries to dress as boyish as possible. In her mind people to hassle a man than a woman. Her outfit currently consists of BDU pants, a black shirt, and sturdy hiking boots. She has a medium complexion, straight black hair cut into an uneven bob.

-----------------------------------------------------

Alex was running quite low on food. Sticking to the back roads may have been safer from the cerebrosus victims, but it was slim pickings in terms of supplies. It didn't help that the pick up truck she looted was almost falling apart from rust. Cautiously making her way into the outskirts of another town, she chanced on a road sign marking the directions to a CDC lab. She figured that it may have supplies or medications she may need in the future and decided to investigate. To her shock, there was still a lone scientist living in the abandoned facility. After observing him for a while she decided he wasn't infected and approached him cautiously.

She had barely any human contact in over a year and although Alex would never admit it, she was lonely. After a bit of post-apocalyptic small talk and cautious inspections Alex found that they had a bit in common. Daniel had been isolated for about a year and happened to be a biologist as well. He wasn't really her type of biologist but at least they had a few undergraduate classes in common. Daniel had something else in common with Alex, he was running out of food too. Since two people would fare better than one in a search for supplies, Daniel and Alex banded together.

Alex shook her head at the religious scrawlings and sighed. Just what we need, a whole different kind of crazy. She wished they had found more food to stay holed up a bit longer, this was a massive risk. But they didn't have much of a choice.

"Well at least we can be fairly certian there aren't any bikers here. If there is a church group alive in there just play along with the Jesus stuff."

Climbing out of her rustbucket car, Alex slung her rifle over her shoulder. So far the only sign of life was that massive raven. Hopefully that would be the extent of thier greeting party.

Alex glances up towards the man with uncertianity before looking back at Daniel again. drat,no such luck. Looking back up at the bearded man she gives what she hopes is a reassuring smile. The man looked like he was all business, better not make any sudden moves.

"We are just travelers. Couldn't stay at the last place we were camped, and Dayton is pretty much overrun with cerebrosus victims. We figured a military base might be safer. Guess you guys thought the same thing."

She pauses for a moment and thinks.

"Perhaps we could barter with you for information or supplies?"

Crossing her arms she waited for their reply, mabye they could barter with these people for information. That is, if they didn't get shot first. At least the two people on the barricade didn't look like vultures, that was a good sign. She looked past the bearded man at the woman that had appeared and gave a quick smile.

Letting out a breath that she didn't know she had been holding in, Alex looks at Jennifer and nods. Maybe these people were friendly after all. At least they aren't outright hostile.

"Yeah something like that. We were running low on food and tried looking through Dayton. We couldn't stop there, that place is overrun. We haven't tried looking around here yet. As far as medicine goes we don't really have anything beyond the basics. Why? Is someone hurt?"

She looks back behind her, thinking of the graffiti she saw on the way in.

"Did you run into bikers? Are they still around?"

Alex shook her head. What could be worse than bikers? Maybe that was behind the wierd distant music she heard.

"Nothing followed us as far as I know. We had some infected on the way in, but I think they gave up. I heard some kind of music on the way in, but that could have been my imagination."

Alex extends her hand to the woman.

"I'm Alex by they way, and this is Daniel. Nice to meet you."

Alex looks at Jennifer quizzically then turns to Daniel. She'd certianly seen some wierd things these past few months, but cannibal clowns?

"Whoa now, magical cannibal clowns?"

Were these people insane? Maybe she misheard or it was a slang she was unfamiliar with. Or it could be the delusion of a crazy post apocalyptic religious group.

"When I was still living the the national park, I caught a glimpse of some pretty wierd stuff, but it could have been animals disfigured by the rain. Maybe you saw something like that? Or mabye it was another gang?"

Noticing Hobbs' inspection Alex shifts her stance so he can get a good view of the survival knife and pistol around her waist. No sense in hiding weapons if "things" are around She acknowledges Hobbs with a tilt of her head.

"Probably best if we wait and see what the infected do. Sorry about bringing them to your doorstep. If they do become an issue I'll help put them down."

Alex nods distractedly at Daniels' words. She hadn't been around this many people in over a year and it was a bit overwhelming. It was almost too many too fast.

"Empiricism, yeah. But whoever they are I'm in no rush to meet them either. Demon clowns or not."

She blinks and snaps back to attention. Looked like asking about the shower could wait.

"poo poo is that guy ok?"

Following behind Jennifer she pulls out her first aid kit. It looks like at least a fourth of the people here were wounded, no wonder that Hobbs guy had been suspicious.

"If you need anything out of this, help yourself. I know a little first aid if that helps."

It looked like the others had this situation under control, and to be honest, she wasn't nearly as skilled as Daniel with fixing up wounds. Her repertoire consisted mainly of fixing cuts and bruises. Hearing Hobbs' comments she turns to Daniel.

"I'll be over by Hobbs. If you need me give a shout."

Alex leans in and adds with a whisper.

"Don't go wandering off out of shout distance just yet, I have no idea what is going on here."

Picking her binoculars out of the backpack, she climbs up to a perch a yard or so away from Hobbs. Talking in a low tone, she peers through the binoculars and scans the outskirts of the suburbs slowly.

"You said there was something beyond them?"

Glancing at Sam she gives a quick shrug.

"You got me there. I'm still amazed they can somehow see without eyes. It's pretty uncanny."

In spite of the heat, a chill goes up her spine. Yeah, how do they see with no eyes? For that matter how do they not die from those eye wounds getting infected? . Returning to her search, Alex scans the suburbs. Sucking in a quick breath at the sight of the crowd, she frowned. Alex wasn't sure that a group with this many injuries could handle them. Passing the binoculars to Hobbs she turned around so the rest of the group could hear her.

"Guys? That movement in the suburbs is a bigger crowd of the plague victims. We should figure out what we want to do about them pretty soon."

"Yeah I guess that could work. I can drive or shoot."

She looks from her old bolt action to Hobbs' fancier rifle.

"Probably drive. My car won't be much good in terms of driving, it barely made it here. This place has got to have a humvee or some kind of tough car that could stand up to a little damage. Especially if that clown gang is still around."

Alex makes a mental inventory and continues.

"Southwest might be best. I wouldn't want to go to far into the south because of the humidity and rains though."

She didn't like the idea of leaving Daniel alone with them, but the alternative was worse. Besides, you probably led those things right to them.

She gives his hand a firm shake before turning to look at Daniel. Digging into her pocket Alex pulls out a radio and gives it a little shake before putting it way.

"He should be alright, hes got the the other one. We'll keep in contact every few minutes."

A wry grin spreads across her face.

"Besides it might be better if he stays here with the wounded, he knows some medicine. Daniel can handle a gun pretty good if any of those things get through. If we don't get them away from the base we're all screwed anyways."

At least I hope he can. With no car and little supplies this was the best bet they had. Hopefully they'd be able to draw them off without any trouble or surprises.

Adding in a low tone

"If we don't come back... well use your best judgment, don't try anything risky."

She claps him on the shoulder and trails after Hobbs.

"It looks like the truck is the only real choice. Motorcycles don't give enough protection."

She didn't mind the sweat smell or even the specks of blood, but when she opened the bag in the dash, nearly vomited. Dropping the bag and gagging Alex clasped her hands over her mouth and took a full step back. Regaining some of her composure she nudges the disgusting thing away from the car with her foot.

"Jesus Christ, who the hell does that?"

Who could do it? Well anyone really. Before the disaster wiped out most of "civilized" society the man who cut off the fingers could have been a doctor, a priest or a daycare worker for all she knew. It couldn't be just the bikers, outlaws and psychopaths that survived. A person just like her could do these things. Would she do it? Could she do it? Smoothing her shirt with slightly trembling hands, Alex spoke again.

"Maybe we should bury them or something if we get a chance."

Hearing the commotion from the barricade Alex runs back to her old perch again and takes the binoculars. It looked like running was becoming more and more natural these past few months.

"What now?"

That isn't...couldn't be...oh god Handing the binoculars to the next person brave enough to take a look, Alex starts to feel a sharp pang of panic race through her brain. Maybe Jennifer was right....No, there was a rational explanation. The clown gang was just on PCP or something. That was it. Standing up, she strode back to the biker car, barely controlling her urge to run.

"We got to get going soon."

Giving the car one last once over, Alex checked the gas tank then climbed in and adjusted the car seat. Nerves jangling, she tapped the steering wheel waiting for everyone else to get ready for what was looking more and more like a hail Mary.

Shifting into gear she heads out, trying not to look at the stuffed people. Just put it out of your mind. There's probably a bomb in that sack anyways. They reminded her of that book she read as a kid, the one with the horrible pictures and the story about the scarecrow that skinned farmers. Suppressing a shudder Alex drove on, nearing closer to the suburbs and keeping a sharp eye out for any little traps or road hazards ahead. She pressed down the button on her radio.

She didn't scream when the painted victims appeared, or when the horrendously malformed man with tentacle eyes came into view. But when the infected exploded on top of the car she almost lost it. Had that tentacle thing done it? No, no it had to be a bomb attached. It's not magic, there are no such things as monsters, and if it can breathe, it can die. Desperately mashing the wiper-fluid button Alex hopes for the best as she starts to gag from the smell.

"Shoot that thing! The loving windshield oh god..."

The last thing they needed was to run into that...thing, and get killed a while new way. This car has a ram at least. We may have to use it. Snatching the battered baseball cap off her head Alex attempts to wipe some of the putrid explosion off. Damed she'd let a car crash kill her before the other freaks got their chance.

If the riot shield is the curved type, Alex is going to attempt to reach through any gap it may have and wipe off the gore with her hat. If not she'll reach through the window as fast as she can and try and clean it a little that way.

Alex had blinked in surprise as her arm made that horrible popping sound. How can it be that strong? Then the pain shot down her arm and her thoughts became more panicked and jumbled. Of course it is strong, it's a monster you idiot, a real honest to god monster. She then watched in horror as the car crashed through the resteraunt and Hobbs flew out of the car. Staring at the white cloud obscuring her vision for a few seconds she tried to make sense of what happened. Did we crash? Bushing the air bag aside, she distractedly looked around and the wrecked Mc Donalds. Stumbling out of the car, Alex landed on her arm and almost howled in pain. Weaving through the mess she half knelt half fell beside Hobbs.

"Oh god Hobbs don't be dead, we gotta get out of here...we gotta move...I don't wanna die in a Mc Donalds."

Didn't help that her arm was still throbbing and hanging uselessly at her side. She wouldn't be much use in any kind of fight if it came to that, and it probably would. Gesturing to Hobbs then to the back door Alex clutches her pistol and waits to follow Hobbs out. Saying a silent prayer, Alex keeps an eye on the infected as they cautiously try to leave. Glancing around, it looked like there was another potential problem as well. Whispering to Hobbs in a barely audible voice, Alex gazed at the strange figure and tried to determine if it was a real person or another thing.

"Looks like we have more company. We need to get to cover fast. Our choices are limited, take your pick."

Scanning the area, she turns back to Hobbs. Her disjointed arm still throbbed with pain, this wouldn't be fun. Shrugging off her pack, Alex places it carefully behind some rusted debris. Holding the radio close, she turned it back up and talked into it in a low and fearful voice.

"Its clowns, show them a holy book."

She turned the radio back down and held her breath. There was no doubt in her mind now that those things were real evil. Alex turned her eyes away from the macabre game of chicken, terrified of seeing her friend die. Instead she stared at the fallen bird. If we escape, I'll take you with me little fella.

Alex nodded her head reluctantly and gave her wounded arm a grim look.

"I can try."

Thinking quickly and feverishly, she tried to remember what Jennifer told her about the clowns.

"Maybe if we yell Bible verses at them..."

Alex clenches her teeth and makes a desperate dash for the drivers seat. Oh please let this work. Putting one foot in front of the other, she starts reciting a psalm in a barely audible voice.

"The lord is my shepard..."

Alex stares numbly at the bird. Was she dying? Probably. At least I still have my eyes. Hey little guy, going bad for you too, huh? . With the last ounce of her strength Alex tries to reach out and pull the little bird towards her, cradling it.

Ht- -2/10, fit

Sorry if I was unclear, but Alex was just mumbling passages and running, not going for the Bible. I know for all intents and purposes she pretty much has one arm that works and one thats useless.

Alex stares blankly at the people around her, her vision blurring. She tries to speak, but it comes out as a garbled moan. At least her arm didn't hurt anymore, maybe she just didn't notice it. Clutching the bird to her chest like a favorite toy, Alex examines it slightly before her wavering eyesight makes it difficult. She contents herself with gazing at the clouds passing high above the truck and attempts to tune out the burning in her neck, and the dull throb of her arm.

Only bits and pieces of their return get through to Alex. The vans abrupt stop rouses her briefly from her dazed condition. She stares at the bird still gripped in her good right hand. Are we back? Are we safe?. Hanging on to consciousness by the thinnest thread, Alex stares at the faces of the others. Head lolling to the side as she drifts in and out of awareness, she has one last concrete thought; Jesus Christ do I really look that bad?

Eyes watering from both fear and pain, Alex stares up at Brandon. Wincing as her shirt is pulled back, she tries to stay as still as possible. Maybe It will hurt less if I don't move. It was a miracle her head was still attached, and even more of a miracle they all made it back. Perhaps someone heard her prayer after all. Relaxing slightly, Alex loosens her grip on the wounded bird and closes her eyes. This is going to hurt.

Eyes rolling back and forth, Alex fights to remain conscious. Her nerves are somewhat calmed by the combined efforts of Brandon and Jennifer. While the pain from her neck was still biting, the painkillers made it a bit hazy and far off. Contenting herself to stroke the crows' head with her thumb, Alex tries to take her mind off the gaping wound in her neck. She could ask Daniel to look at the little bird later, he would know what to do. Feeling an odd sensation at her neck, Alex let out a quick gasp. This must be what getting your neck sewn up feels like. I bet I'll look like Frankenstein's monster after all this is done.

Alexs' eyes came back into focus as the pain lessened, and fixed them on Jennifer. Testing out her voice, she whispered in a hoarse tone to no one in particular.

"Wh..what did you give me?"

Taking an inventory of the room with her eyes she added

"Is Daniel ok?"

Turning her gaze to Brandon, Alex gives a weak smile.

"Thanks for the pills, you must be Brandon."

Looking down at the red mess that covers most of her shirt, the smile fades.

"Clown got me with hedge clippers and some red freak messed up my arm."

Still feeling dizzy and pained, Alex pauses for a minute, eyes closed, before continuing.

"They eat birds whole. Grabbed this one, clown was going to get her. She even named the bird before trying to eat. How hosed up is that?"

Alex continues to pet the bird and glances over to Jennifer.

"Clown called her Rebecca. Poor thing got shot by a BB gun. Why, is it important? And how the hell can they turn people into birds?"

Frowning she looked away, it wasn't that she didn't believe Jennifer, not after everything she had seen today, it was just too much. Clowns that eat birds whole and shrug off bullets weren't much more far fetched than clowns that turn people into birds. Her head was spinning from confusion now. What kind of place had the world turned into?

"Do you think she was turned into a bird?"

Alex scrutinizes the bird as best she can given her limited mobility, then hands it to Jennifer.

"A friend of yours?"

Leaning back she mutters more to herself than anyone else.

"Just what the gently caress is going on here."

Laying still for a moment to rest, Alex can feel every bruise, laceration and bit of torn muscle. drat, I forgot all about my arm. Sighing she speaks again.

"Whenever you guys are done with the others, mind looking at my arm? I messed it up pretty bad. "

Leaning back into the cot, Alex watched Jennifer patch up the crow. Despite feeling exhausted, her mind was running a mile a minute. Supernatural things were real and leaking through the cracks in the world. Unless the bird had a light bulb where her brain should be, there was no rational explanation for the glow. There weren't any rational explanations for the clowns either. Everything she thought was true had been turned on its head.

We aren't the meanest creature on earth anymore.

Alex had been holding out hope that the military, the government, someone would eventually sweep through and clan things up. But no one could be prepared to combat this. In one fell swoop, humanity had been knocked down from apex predator to prey. They would have to adapt or die just like any other animal. She would have to adapt as well in order to have any hope of surviving. For now she would watch, listen and question. These people may not know everything about the strange turn of events, but they knew something. Tuning back into the conversation going on around her, Alex casts a wary eye on Chris and Hobbs. Her eyes widen as the situation worsens.

"Guys, lets talk this out before we start with the guns. We have enough problems already."

"You may want to let Jennifer patch you up Hobbs, you did take a header out of the car."

Alex shook her head slightly. Auras? Spirits? An underground train? She was staring to fade a bit from the painkillers, but could still tell that something strange was going on.

"I don't know anything about any of this mystical stuff. Before I saw the clowns and the red-headed thing today I would have thought you all were crazy. In fact I kind of did think just that. To be honest this is all increasingly bizarre. I've had some weird dreams over the months, but I'm sure they are run of the mill given the situation. Jennifer, you mentioned the Appalachians? I just came out of that area. What would the, uh, gateway look like? "

Rubbing her eyes with her good hand, she continues

"The only strange things I've noticed, besides the monsters, are the birds. Blackbirds are a type of Eurasian Thrush, but I've seen a few of them around recently. I have no idea what they are doing in North America. I suppose they could have escaped from some University's ornithology lab."

Frowning a bit Alex unconsciously puts her hand up to the bandages around her neck.

"I suppose I should mention that the clowns don't seem to be very scared of the Bible."

Alex shrugs at Hobbs

"Like I said, I'm really out of my depth here. They don't seem to be following us here at any rate. What about those red-head things? I doubt they'd have any problems getting over the gate."

She gives Hobbs a quizzical look

"Who is this pale man? Is it another type of infected?"
