Thank you x1,000,000 for doing this. Sakura Taisen is one of my favorite series, but ironically enough, I know the least about the actual games. Also, I vote for Kanna. I vote for Kanna five times. In response to a much earlier question about whether or not the set ever came crashing down in one of the live shows, the answer is yes, sort of. During a rehearsal, Sakura bumps into Sumire, who overreacts and knocks over a huge pillar and pretends to have twisted her ankle. Kanna strides over and sets the (supposedly very heavy) pillar upright again. This is hilarious because in real life, the woman who plays her is all of 4'10". (Although, to watch her on stage, sometimes you wouldn't realize it.) Later on, Kanna offers to help Sumire up to her room: Kanna: Just throw your arm around my neck and lean on me. Sumire: ...is this really all right? Kanna: Sure! After all, I'm two meters tall! Sumire practically has to duck-walk off the stage in order to "lean" on Kanna. The live shows are full of jokes about the discrepancies between the heights of the characters and the heights of the actors. Not only is "Kanna" the shortest cast member, but "Iris" is one of—if not the—tallest, which is demonstrated to great effect in this clip.

And her profile, from the website: Birthdate: July 5, 1913 Height: 121 cm [3'11½"] Weight: 26 kg [57 lbs] Blood Type: AB Sign: Cancer Birthplace: Champagne, France Her real name is Iris [pronounced "ee-rees"] Chateaubriand. She is the daughter of a wealthy French family. Because her spiritual power level is so high, she had a sheltered upbringing. Naive and gentle, she is never seen without her stuffed bear Jean-Paul. So, since the first game, she's grown a whopping two inches. ...sweet merciful Christ, is she using her spiritual power to stay nine years old forever? Although, in one of the games, we see what she'll eventually look like as an adult, at age 20.

Either that or she is going to have one hell of a growth spurt in the next five years. I think Iris is supposed to be 20 years old in her dream sequence, since 20 is the coming-of-age year in Japan. Iris, age 15. Iris, age 20(?). I wish they'd updated the character designs just a little bit for the DS game. Not to mention that everyone's been wearing the same clothes for the past five years.

It can also be the name of a place, such as Omiwa Shrine (大神神社) or Oga Station (大神駅). Ogami also sounds like ookami (狼) or "wolf," and I think some of Ogami's attacks make reference to this. Ogami's given name, Ichiro (一郎), is a name given to first-born sons, as that is exactly what it means.

Dash Magnum posted:EDIT: (If I remember right, Maria was Tripitaka. I think Sumire is supposed to be a Moth-Demon that they have to fight or something. And if memory serves they ended up casting Sakura and Iris as Pigsy and Sandy respectively...Hooray for Journey to the West!) You remembered correctly! In the original staging of Saiyuki, Kanna plays Son Gokuu, Sumire plays the villainous Madame Youki, Maria plays Sanzou-houshi, Sakura plays Cho Hakkai, Iris plays Sa Gojou, and Kouran plays Kinkaku-daioh. There was also a Shin Saiyuki drama CD in which everyone tired of Kanna and Sumire ruining everything with their constant bickering, and decided to recast the show by drawing straws. This resulted in the casting of Kouran as Son Goku and Iris as Sanzou-houshi. Both Kanna and Sumire wound up with minor roles, which pleased neither of them, and so they ruined everything with their constant bickering. But by the time Saiyuki was adapted for one of the live-action musicals, Orihime and Leni had joined the Hanagumi and Sumire had retired, so some roles were recast and others were created. The new stage featured Kanna as Son Gokuu, Maria as Gyuumaoh, Orihime as Sanzou-houshi, Sakura as Cho Hakkai, Iris as Sa Gojou, Kouran as Kinkaku-daioh, and Leni as Ginkaku-daioh.
