Also saying Tachibana. She seems impressed by calmness and composure, which are important traits for a commander with essentially irreplaceable troops.

In addition, if you keep practicing the piano, you're only one bass player away from a smoove jazz trio.

Just watch, if you don't find Jean-Paul, Iris keeps psykering up bigger and bigger objects searching for him and you wind up having to mash 20 buttons in 5 seconds to catch the chandelier.

Anybody who can stay awake reading Dostoevsky in a bed at nighttime is not entirely human. Perhaps it's special sniper training to keep full attention staring through a tiny scope at a small open window?

Hmm, so that's why. Here I thought everybody was denying the secret robot assault force because they figured that someone with special energy had to be a bit special in the :downs: way and they didn't want to break his little brain.

Good god, the side comments have me completely cracking up. This is great.

And for a second I thought the bullet train was going to get loaded into a giant underground revolver and fired to its target. Because that's the only possible way things could get any more awesome.

So is this grid-based or are we looking at actual free-range movement here? That is, can you cheat your action gauge by tweaking out a few fractions of a step and then still unload a full attack?

I note that Action Movie Rule 26 is in full effect: "even if the impact isn't strong, even if neither thing involved could possibly combust, when two objects collide there's a screenful of explosion". Or were those all fireworks stands?

Also, forget the mecha suits, the real hero here is piloting Rolling Thunder. Then again the tracks were probably just laid out by Diddy Kong rules - keep going full throttle and you'll never miss a jump.

Couple more questions:

I notice that despite the earlier slap fight and Sakura being inside the Doom Flower, Sumire only took out the mook. I'm guessing there's no friendly fire?

And how the heck does Tachibana work? Is her sniper rifle a normal attack with a giant range, or does she snipe entirely through special attacks?

If you are the captain, you should be the one to determine whether or not we require cover on this side.
If not... then there is no way I will ever accept you as the captain of the Imperial Assault Force, Flower Division.

:saddowns:

[Ogami]
Eh!? E, even if you say that...

[Maria]
Please keep this in mind. Because I have not yet accepted you as our captain.

[Ogami]
I got it... I'll put all my effort into doing my best, so...

This is not an auspicious beginning.

I'm a little confused as to how this conversation flows. I'm assuming it's generic "Ogami and Maria say hi" and not sensitive of battlefield position, but I'm getting several possible meanings from this.

Scenario 1:
<Ogami> Maria, covering fire!
<Maria> ...did you just copy that out of your training manual? We're in a largely open area fighting enemies who aren't using cover. Even if they were, they're all close-combat and suppressive fire would have no impact on their ability to perforate you before you got close. USE TACTICS, NEWB!

Scenario 2:
<Ogami> Maria, covering fire!
<Maria> I am unfamiliar with this "covering fire" of which you speak. You can't possibly have more military acumen than I do, so I shall demean you for talking nonsense.

Scenario 3:
<Ogami> Maria, covering fire!
<Maria> Sorry, Ogami. As much as I'd _like_ to run overwatch the game won't let me take any reactive actions. Besides, you've got a magic 360-degree bird's eye view, so I don't need to be on a high vantage point spotting threats and eliminating them, one by one, with cold, cruel precision... drat YOU PROGRAMMERS! TACHIBANA WANTS TO CLIMB THE BELLTOWER!

From here it sounds like it's supposed to be 1, but it comes off as more 2, and the effect on the player is probably supposed to be 3.

EDIT: Aaand I just realized that what was probably happening here is Scenario 4:

<Ogami> Maria, we're going in! Cover us!
<Maria> Cover "us"? You're going to be too busy charging in like a fool to actually pay attention to other threats? Last I checked, a commander needed to keep his eye on the _whole_ battlefield, "Captain" Ogami.

It was also a crushing grind before they brought it over. But either I was playing it wrong or when they bumped up the XP they forgot to buy up the cash and MP rewards from combat. It got to the point at the end of the game that I had to keep spamming that chance magic of Nelsha's that randomly doubles MP gain and even then I couldn't actually forge everybody's weapons because they just kept leveling up, making it more costly to forge, so I had to grind MP, which meant getting XP, which meant levels, which made it more costly to forge, so I had to grind MP...

Spirit Armor posted:

The currently highlighted one, 'Protect', is ridiculously useful:

When an enemy attacks whoever Ogami's Protecting, he will automatically jump in and nullify all damage taken. It's kind of like a godly version of SRW's Support Guard, except Ogami doesn't actually need to be next to whoever he's Protecting- though the flip side is that he can only Protect his pilots three times per battle. It's also a great way to up your trust level with someone. More masochistic chauvinism, yay!

Protect is like, what, White Dragon Shield from the original Lunar? It nullifies the next attack and then Ogami has to have his turn come around and use another Protect charge? Or does Ogami get a chance to change his Protect target every turn, but every attack against the Protected target uses up one charge?

quote:

Next is Ogami's 'Captain' command, which is what makes these battles a bit more interesting.

This is interesting. Can you unlock a "Void" strategy or am I just reading too far in?

Also I note that despite being in Mountain the pilots pull off their special attacks. Did they start the battle with a full charge from the previous one, or what?

Put together with his Protect command, I'm getting a very Book of Five Rings vibe from Ogami. The original twin-sword style wasn't designed to give you a second attack at -2/-4 every round, but as a superior method of defense and terrain control, suitable for any occasion.

Spirit Armor posted:

As you can see, a happy pilot is a godly pilot.

You say this but I keep wondering. In the battle screens so far, I haven't noticed anything like XP in the game. The only way to improve a pilot is to get them to like Ogami more?

That Protect command is hell of useful then - protect a weaker pilot while they get stronger.

Basic priorities for Ogami then:

1) Don't Be An rear end.
2) Become a better field commander (which should get you in with Maria.)
3) Entertain us!
4) If at all possible, practice the piano.

As much as Iris keeps me out, being an rear end to her is not a very good idea. Not for nothing is it said: "Meddle not in the affairs of psykers, for they are short-tempered and quick to cockblock."

Stupid Speculation Time, I have no idea whether I'm hitting the mark or not. Probably not.

The original Koubu design was stolen from the Hive of Darkness. Their ground troops are the same general design with some poor victim stuck in there to power it, and their spirit energy is utterly drained in the process. The Hive leaders use the same design and are sure enough of themselves that they don't worry about getting sucked into the gas tank. That humans seemingly always do is just more proof of the frailty of these pathetic fleshbags who dare despoil the planet.

The only modification is a safety interlock so that the Koubu powers down instead of sucking its pilot's soul out if the energy is too low. But it's not entirely proven that this will actually always work and there are a couple of husks in the R&D division's closet.

Hanafuda- this particular card game, I hear?- was Kohran's minigame.

Wow, how completely unlike the Kohran we've come to know and check under our beds for.

Also, you must give more detail of these character-specific minigames as and when the opportunity presents itself.

Each major combination of cards is worth a certain number of points; if either player racks up some badass combination of cards, they can either choose to keep the round going in hopes of getting a BETTER combo (the top option, 'Koi Koi!')- which is risky, because the opponent might win during that time- or to simply end the round (the bottom option, 'Ya~meta'- basically something like 'Stopping Here'). If s/he chooses to end the round, the combo's weight in points is deducted from the loser's side- here, Sakura's 'Kasu' combo (which, as far as I can tell, means "assorted odds and ends") is worth a paltry one point.

Sounds like competitive Mahjong. You can try to go out with a bunch of simple pairs, but there's big points to be had in the more esoteric combos.

Does Ogami have, like, base stats of God or something? It seems like he's going to get his rear end kicked out there, at least compared to everybody else.

I guess as long as he can hang back, shield pilots, and give orders he'll be doing alright, but eeka Topeka he looks fragile.

So, Mystery Woman was supposed to head up the project until it was found that the Mystic Spirit Connection is more prevalent among women than men?

Well, obviously Ogami's in that position because he secretes mysterious pheromones that up Spirit Energy and as a coincidence make girls like him more.

Seeing the effect operate in reverse leads to the obvious conclusion - Finger Blowjob Woman was originally tapped for the job until the Flower Division couldn't find enough men to actually make up a unit of Koubu pilots.

REINFORCE THE HANGAR NOW.

(Also, I wonder if her explosive AoE actually gets bigger with a higher trust level? Probably not.)

Other people have already said what I wanted to say, just a few questions, more mechanics-related than anything else.

First, do we ever get to see what Kohran was going to give to Maria? My guess is something matryoshka-related, possibly ablative armor or a fragmentation grenade with multiple outer layers. (or does she just get Russia completely wrong? I could also buy this)

Second, what determines whether or not a pilot says something at the beginning of their turn? Being highly motivated in general, or being one of the ones with the highest trust levels toward Ogami?

Third, at the start of Ogami's turn the pilot with the highest trust level is rooting him on, right?

Fourth, I know you've explained this already, but just to make sure I've got it straight - trust levels carry over absolutely, but the stats bonuses are recalculated at the start of every battle. Is the bonus based on an absolute level of trust, or some "target" trust level - that is, even if you don't do anything between now and the next battle with Sumire and Kohran, will they still be combat monsters with bonus move? It seems like the extra move they have now is enough to fill the bar completely, so that suggests some maximum power level.

Fifth, how exactly does Kohran's normal attack AoE work? Does she hit everything in the radius, or are the attacks randomly distributed on targets in there? If the former, what differentiates her from Maria? Shorter range? Less overall power? Part of this is not wanting to believe Maria just got absolutely replaced.

Sixth, Ogami can still have conversations with Maria, with Sakura, and about the tower even during the boss fight, right?

Also, what would you say the action/dating ratio of this game is? It seems to be a little short on the action, I'm sorry to say.

Well, look at it this way. In other strategy-RPGs your method for powering up your team is to set them to auto-spar, drive off to the nearest Sonic, eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert there until you've exhausted its entire menu, then return home and realize you'll have to do the whole thing again because 30 minutes in the game decided to show one of the battle phrases it has 0.005% chance of displaying and you needed to hit X to clear it.

In this strategy-RPG your method for powering up your team is to look at girls in various states of undress.

See, I was actually somewhat excited when I'd heard initial reports of the Sakura Wars DS game. You can pick and choose your team out of all eighteen or so heroines from all three major games! You can send them running around and decimate evil! Whoopee!

... and then I heard that 1) there are no giant robots involved, and 2) it's basically going to be a Mysterious Dungeon game (you know, like Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon, Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon, etc).

:gonk:

I wouldn't :gonk: just yet.

Consider the following:

1) The demo includes Ogami with a sword and shield, for melee combat. This is a Mysterious Dungeon trope but more than that it's not Classically Japanese. Shields existed mostly as portable cover against range attacks, there wasn't enough metal to make them. (As a side note, it's kinda ironically funny that thus far Kanna's fighting style is the most recent vintage. The Chinese had rocketry in the 10th century and gunners by the 13th, but Okinawan karate and the subsequent weaponization of the tonfa are late 19th century.) This suggests we're dealing with an entire alternate universe.

2) Giant robots and the entire steampunk milieu don't show up out of mechanical necessity but a desire for Maximum Awesome. Clearly there has to be _some_ contrivance around to allow otherwise-combat-incapable characters to hit things with their feelings, but this is either magic or technology sufficiently advanced to be indistinguishable therefrom.

2a) "Therefrom" doesn't trigger my spellcheck. Apparently it is actually a word. Who knew?

3) If the entire Sakura Wars cast are more than just fragile amalgams of personality and situation, they can be ported to an entirely different world setup without substantial loss of tone. This is the characteristic of a true "ensemble cast".

4) Sakura Wars is functionally a strategy RPG but with a completely distinct power-up mechanic. There's no reason this mechanic can't be ported over to a Mysterious Dungeon game, perhaps intertwined with dungeon exploration via a kind of Shadow Hearts or Anachronox-type system, where items found in the dungeon are used in town sequences to power up the characters.

5) I'll leave it up to your imagination precisely who gets combat upgrades from the gay porn.

Well, if Spirit Armor is going to be doing multiple endings, he'll need to keep a few girls up anyway. I don't think anything is going to require focused attention for a while, and if it does there might be the option to go back for it, if it doesn't represent a lot relatively of the game?

More than that, though, I'd like to see as many of the :wtc: parts of this game as I can. This is why above all I vote Don't Be An rear end, because sitting in your room like a big jerky lump (mmm, jerky lumps) isn't as fun as going out and playing along.

Except for playing along with Iris, because :gonk: :hf: :pedo:

I vote Maria because I want to see if we ever get under the ice. If I had multiple votes they'd go toward Sumire and Kanna, because they look like they represent, respectively, the ego and punchiness of :kamina: and I like to see that run wild.

If Iris stops being pedo-bait, or Sakura stops being a creepy clingy stalker, or Kohran does something other than an unholy mix of explosions and tentacle rape, I'd like to see that too.

It's most important to first do what's funny and/or entertaining, even if that means following around a character who we haven't interacted with much before.
