I just got back from an advance screening of Superbad. I went in with fairly high expectations given that Judd Apatow's name was attached to it, and I was certainly not disappointed. In fact, at the risk of sounding like a fanboy, I'd wager it's one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time.

Certainly, us goons don't need to be introduced to such people as Michael Cera (Arrested Development), Jonah Hill (Knocked Up), and Seth Rogen (Freaks and Geeks, The 40 Year Old Virgin), and the style of humour is certainly typical of their past work. Cera's awkward character is very reminiscent of George Michael Bluth, for instance, and you can certainly see shades of Undeclared in a lot of the scenes.

The humour is certainly not high-brow, but it's on the whole less crude than an American Pie (but not by much). Having said that, some of the loudest laughs in the theatre came from the grossest scenes in the film; I personally can't remember the last time I laughed as hard as I did at the flashback to the young Seth obsessively drawing cocks as a child, especially the recreation of the famous tiananmen square photo with a cock standing in front of the tanks. Also, the humour, while zany, isn't really unbelievable, and luckily some of the most ridiculous aspects of the movie are resolved at the end (namely the two cops), so you don't feel like the movie is just a series of unrelated jokes strung together with a dumb plot.

At two hours, it's fairly long for a comedy, and the third act seemed to drag on a bit. Luckily, there was enough momentum to keep things moving, and I was happy all the way through. However, a word to the wise: the movie is quotable enough that you can guarantee the Internet will run it into the ground faster than you can say "vote for Pedro", so for the love of God see it early. If you don't get sick of the jokes before even walking in the theatre, I'm confident to say you'll love it.

Pros: Hilarious script. Solid cast. Rockin' soundtrack.

Cons: Perhaps a bit too long for the amount of material. The internet is sure to over-quote this movie to death in short order.

Superbad is the funniest movie I have ever seen. It's not like 40 year old virgin which was funny for the most part, but starts getting too emotional the last half hour or so. It's not like Knocked Up which had hilarious jokes, but annoying and obnoxious characters and was wholly unbelievable. Superbad was two hours of nonstop laughter from beginning to end, but it does have heart.

Superbad is a teen sex comedy and while it certainly has many of the plot devices of the thousands of teen sex comedies before it, none of those have the laughs that Superbad does. Jonah Hill is your typical protagonist in a teen sex comedy, undersexed, manic and obnoxious, but in a good way. Cera's character isn't. Cera's character is by all accounts a good guy who isn't obsessed with sex (though he does like porn) he just kind of goes along with what Hill does and says because thats how their friendship works. He's a pretty endearing character which is what sets him apart from most characters in these type of movies. The third outcast is Christopher Minz-Plasse who plays the character McLovin. Let's just say once the public gets to see this flick, it will be the summer of McLovin. The kid is hilarious and gets into his wacky adventures with the two cops Hader and Rogen (who proves once again that he is better suited for the whacky sidekick role than the lead).

I couldn't recommend this movie more. It is absolutely hilarious and I was hurting from laughter afterwards. Go see this movie, if you don't like it you are probably a communist.

I was actually pretty disappointed. I don't think Jonah Hill is funny and his character (both in Knocked Up and Superbad) is pretty much completely unlikable. The whole reason Apatow has such a good list of projects is that they usually feature sort of wacky situations and clever dialogue delivered by endearing losers. It doesn't work when I don't like anybody and they're not really clever, just obnoxious.

I liked parts of it, but it seemed like so much emphasis was put on Seth being a douchebag, and I think McLovin was a pretty generic teenage movie dork and I'm not sure why he's supposedly going to be this hugely quoted hilarious character for the rest of the summer. Even the cop characters seemed a little too exaggerated most of the time and I just couldn't connect at all.

I just got back from the midnight showing and I have to say that I haven't laughed that hard at a movie in a long, long time. I don't think that there was a character in the movie that was too over the top, and the movie nailed what it's like to be an awkward kid in highschool pretty much spot on. I really didn't expect too much from this movie because usually low-brow humor doesn't do it for me, but there's actually a lot of humor there that will resonate with a lot of people, aside from the obvious sex jokes and crudeness.

Relied way too much on swear words being funny, which they just aren't. Parts are extremely hilarious, but some of the dialog is just embarrassing. I'm disappointed, because I loved Apatow's earlier work.

Masterful. One of the funniest comedies I've ever seen, and probably the funniest teen comedy I've ever seen. When Seth Rogen playing the incompetent cop is the least funny part of your movie, you know you have gold.

Downside? Every human being who couldn't stop repeating lines from Austin Powers, Anchorman and Napoleon Dynamite will be saying "McLovin lololol" in the coming weeks.

One of the funniest movies that I've ever seen. Michael Cera was the best character, but I have to give the funniest line to McLovin. I got a boner. I thought the subplot with the cops was a little ridiculous, but hilarious nonetheless. Overall, watch this movie, but not with your parents.

I thought it was brilliant. As someone who didn't graduate from high school all that long ago, it was great to see a movie that I identified with that didn't rely on stupidness and obtuse joke setups. Just a natural, free=flowing comedy. I don't usually buy movies on DVD, but I'm ordering this one when it comes out.

See it, see it with friends. One of the most enjoyable experiences I've ever had in a theater.

I see you baby.
Superbad was, in all seriousness, without a hint of exaggeration or satire, the worst movie that I have ever had the displeasure of seeing. It started relatively strong - I thought I might be watching a tightly paced, stream-of-consciousness jabfest akin to something else that Apatow has had a hand in - but it soon took a severe downturn, with the soon-to-be-infamous montage of Seth's childhood drawings marking the point past which the movie plummeted over the edge. What followed was an hour and a half of the most cringe-worthy, awkward, insipid "comedy" that I have ever actually allowed myself to sit through. If I'd had more wits about me, I actually would have walked out once it became clear that Michael Cera's character was going to sing to the guys in the room where he uses the phone (I am stupid and don't know how to use spoiler tags). As it was, I actually proceeded to subject myself to the worst half-hour of the movie, when they actually reach their destination.

The worst part is that everything in the movie serves to add too the awkwardness level, from the cinematography, to the downright painful use slow motion, to the costumes and color schemes. I feel like I spent two hours of my life having a horrible joke played on me; like now everyone who is pretending to like this movie gets to point, laugh, and say, "It was called Superbad, what did you expect lol?" I sincerely hope that this is as bad as movies ever get while I am alive and watching them, because I do not think my physical body can withstand a single cringe more than this movie provided it with.

Absolutely hilarious. This has to be one of the funniest dirty-humor movies in a while. While my friends couldn't get enough of "supposed" quality comedies like Waiting and Grandma's Boy, this film actually delivers what the other 2 couldn't.

Once Superbad gets going it never stops. I was almost in tears the entire length of the movie. Is it over the top? Yes. Is it vulgar and digusting? Yes. But I don't care, it was funny.

I thought the trailers did the movie absolutely no justice - but it's a good thing. It captured "the teenage years" and all of its awkwardness incredibly well. Very funny. Captures the high school zeitgeist perfectly--the main characters are all immeasurably awkward, but maintain an endearing honesty. There's no tired pondering on cliques, no sappy Hollywood sentimentality, no angst. The girls aren't made out to be perfect by any measure, and get equal opportunity to embarrass themselves. It never seemed like a screenwriter's schmaltzy vision of how teenagers are. And Michael Cera's rendition of "These Eyes" kicked rear end.

I had pretty high expectations for this movie and it didn't disappoint at all. The McLovin subplot got a bit unbelievable, but ultimately I don't think it hurt the movie at all - the whole thing was a delicate balance between the devastatingly realsitic (the awkward dialogue and the way the main characters descended into manic, handwringing nervousness whenever a girl was around) and the sublimely ridiculous (repeatedly being hit by cars, the fantasy sequence in the grocery store, McLovin and the cops, beer in a laundry detergent bottle, ten thousand elaborate cock drawings).

Overall I think it was very well done. The characters are wonderfully written, the different subplots mesh nicely, and the acting was surprisingly solid. This is definitely the best teen movie I've seen in years - I spent about half of the long running time laughing, and the other half bent over from sympathetic embarrassment. I'm not sure whether there's a specific muscle group that's used in the act of cringing, but if there is, mine is going to be extremely loving sore tomorrow morning.

I have to agree with most of these positive reviews. While I've never been much of a fan of any "teen comedies" in the past, I can hardly find a way to describe how consistently funny this movie truely is. It's a two hour stomach work out between chuckling intently, laughing hysterically, and being completely brain fried from some of the sheer idiotic genius of it all. Cameos from across all the funniest lands of the comedy realm have merged together in this single film. Many people have also commented on the comparatively excessive length of the film, but if/when you're laughing this hard at a movie non-stop it just leaves you with a golden afterglow like you've had two hours straight of intense "comedy" sex (I don't think a comedy in recent years has ever left me this fully satisfied in terms of laughter.) I thought I knew what to expect from a "summer blockbuster comedy" but I was completely blown away. The coverage of this movie, advertizements, talk show appearances, etc.. was total overkill, and I can already feel that new catchy "McWord" panging headaches into my head for months to come, but goddamnit if it wasn't humorous the first time 'round. This probably could have risen in fame like Napoleon Dynamite, but I think this time everyone knew exactly they had in their hands: A big rear end comedy cock buster!

Honestly, the only bad part of the movie is the fact that the audience was laughing so hard at some points that I would miss the next 4-5 seconds of dialogue in the movie.

The plot, the dialogue, the jokes and all the cast were excellent.

Just hilarious and amazing. I was a bit skeptical as my high school years are considerably behind me (graduated in 99), but I had a blast. It was very laugh out loud funny and had the kind of dry humor that I feel will work time and time again. Cera is a delight and whenever I see him I get fond memories of Arrested Development. Here he is just great, very funny, full of nervous energy. I loved it.

I don't have much to say. This movie is the funniest movie I have ever seen. That's probably because I'm a 16 year old junior in highschool and can relate to this movie so much. This is the "dazed and Confused" of my generation, I believe. I totally agree with the OP in that this movie is going to be quoted to death and beyond death. There is so much funny poo poo going on in this movie that it is impossible to remember everything. For a good movie, I give it a 3.5/5. For comedy, I'd give it a 5.5/5.

Superbad is definately worth the price of admission, popcorn, and a cold drink. So far this is probably the funniest movie I've seen this year.

While some will be turned off by it's low brow humor, it's not exactly old tired jokes. The whole "I drew a lot of dicks" part had me falling out of my chair laughing. The part where Seth thinks about stealing the liquor, especially the old woman telling him good luck on having sex with Jules was pretty hilarious. Then you have the whole Fogell/McLovin subplot. The period stain on the pants part was pretty gross but it was funny none the less

I was even surpised to see Joe Lo Truglio from The State make an appearance as Francis and then see him get his rear end kicked

If you don't find anything in this movie funny, you're a pretty uptight bastard. 5/5

This will be the new classic teen movie, a worthy successor to "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". Funnier, but not quite as strong on story and character IMO.

It drags a little bit in the last 10 minutes or so but not too badly. Pretty consistently funny throughout, but not quite as seamless in gut busting jokes as "40 Year Old Virgin".

This movie was the funniest I have seen this year (or the past few for that matter). I thought each character played a realistic role and hit the nail on the head of an awkward highschool "nerd". My only beef was while the movie did give a sence of being realistic the whole thing with McLovin and the two cops trying to be "nice" by buying him liqueur, letting him shoot a gun, burning their truck, etc. was just plain unbelievable. I don't think I laughed at credits as much as I did here.

That's odd because when I look back on it I don't think there was an actual fart joke in the entire movie :raise:

I'm torn on what to give this movie because as a teen comedy it's very near the top of the pile. The cringe humor that has become so prevalent today actually works in a high school setting, and Jonah Hill, who I normally hate, was actually likable in a dickish sort of way.

I was a little disappointed, but perhaps that's because it's very much a film you see with a certain audience, and for some reason the crowd I saw it with was fairly sparse. I think with repeated viewings it could become a lot better.

I have a theory about this movie: It's a brilliant portrayal of co-dependent people, because it sucks you into the way they feel with an intentional dip in quality of the writing.

The first third or so of the movie is piss-your-pants hilarious, which coincidentally is when the two lead characters are together and acting like normal best friends. The dialogue is smooth and clever, the awkwardness of high school is well portrayed, and nothing ridiculous occurs.

When all the bad poo poo goes down, the movie kind of drags on through the middle third and in some parts it starts to suck. This is where I'll say I hated the two cop characters because they felt like they were acting in a comedy sketch (and that has nothing to do with Bill Hader being SNL cast). It suddenly became a wacky parody movie and took the focus off the main characters. During those parts, either the two leads are separated, or the movie doesn't focus on them nearly as much.

Then toward the end, it gets good again when the leads are paired up again. The dialogue is back to its old self, and the characters are in normal situations.

I think the writers did this to immerse the viewer into the film's characters. I've never seen a movie where the writer intentionally weakens his writing for a portion of the film, but if it's on purpose it gets the point across: The audience is alienated as much as Seth and Evan when they're not together.

My feelings on the different sections of the movie range from a 5 high to a 2 low, so I'll settle between the two: 3.5/5 (ratchet that up to a 4.0 if my theory is correct, because that's pretty clever)

Pros- Some parts are so funny I nearly couldn't breathe.
Cons- Some parts are so stupid I nearly couldn't watch.

As a comedy, it was a fairly run of the mill affair, with plenty of cookie-cutter characters, and Tarantino-lite dialogue. However, once you go deeper than that, and appreciate the subtle homoerotic undertones of the films --most noticeable during the ending--it really becomes something else entirely. Watch it first as a teen comedy, watch it again as the tale of a doomed homosexual relationship to see what I mean. There's plenty in there to suggest that such a reading is possible.
