How old would the witches have been at the start of the series? Nanny's youngest child Shawn is in his early 20s in L&L, which is two years after WS, so it's unlikely that Nanny was more than about 65 in WS. Gytha and Esme are roughly the same age. However, everything gets complicated by the 15-year timeslip in the middle of WS.

Standalone, good enough to not be a turnoff, but not so good as to make the next book disappointing, and late in enough that Ankh Morpork was starting to feel proper. I started with Small Gods as a friend recommended. Going to the early Rincewind stuff after could only disappoint. I still recommend Small Gods to people who wouldn't even be interested in Discworld in general. It's just that good.

Guards Guards was my third discworld book after Going Postal and Mort, and frankly I found it very boring. I had to shelve it for a bit. I am reading it now, and though it is slightly better than when I first tried, it's not that great of a book compared to Mort. Not saying Vimes and the gang are not great. I just find that Guards! Guards! was Terry trying to figure Sam and the gang out, and kind of set them up for what I hope to be great series. However the story is slow, and kind of boring.

Hugh Laurie would actually be loving inspired casting for Granny Weatherwax. They'd hardly need to use any makeup either. "Headology" is something I can hear Dr. House saying, in my mind. Right now. And it's pretty good.

I'm reading through Mo0nstrous Regiment again and it's nowhere near as bad as some people have claimed. It's not the basket of chuckles some Discworld books are, but it's a solid read and easily as good or better than any of the Tiffany Aching books. Maladict's 'Nam flashbacks are some of Pratchett's best examples of absurd humor and the rest of the book manages to convey the horrors of war without glorifying it -- the description of the gray-faced men with coats tightened over their torsos is haunting. I know some people claim the "twist" of all the main characters being secretly women being contrived, but that's no twist at all: the wars have gone on for so long that there aren't any fighting men left.

It actually happened a lot in history. Women disguised themselves to be drummers, soldiers and pirates through the 17th and 18th century. In the French revolution there was even briefly female soldiers.
