Just out of curiosity, why do people do softcore? Hardcore is so much more challenging and rewarding...
If you're comparing your run time to other people doing the same type of ascension you are and trying to go the fastest in that context, softcore can be a lot harder than hardcore. If you're just farting around and going at a somewhat decent speed, neither style of play is difficult at all. People shitfling about this point all the time on the regular forums, though. I'm not looking for an argument, but we disagree on this point.

I don't, however, see why people do softcore after NS13 hit, now that the game requires you to fetch and assemble an insane number of quest items and you can choose casual if you don't feel like putting up with hardcore.

And you can only perm a softie skill from a softcore run, which is only useful in softcore, which is now 'hardcore lite.' The only reason for a person who would rather play hardcore than hardcore lite to do a softcore run would be to churn out trophies, grab once-per-ascension items, or do relatively quick basement runs. Now there's no reason for someone like that to do softcore because they can do casual.

I guess you'd do softie runs for jack of all trades and trivially skilled.

-edit- I guess people might find softcore fun. I used to, but then it changed on me, the bastard.

The best piece of "equipment" would be a tome of snowcone summoning. You will always have a decent tongue on. Other than the overabundance of daily summons (and still uses, if you're a moxie class with the skill), it plays a lot like regular hardcore, without needing to fetch food/drinks. As far as actual equipment goes, whatever made your life easier in regular HC will do the same in HCO.

Yeah, they're unprofessional and I guess I'm jealous that they get paid to do what is essentially a hobby for 3 hours a day. But this SSPD went off without any glitches, except for a curious lack of beads. That is some exceptional progress on their part.

There's a pirate cove's revamp being worked on right now, should be pushed out soon enough, I hope they fix the loving rate for the drunkenss adventure, it always takes me like 20 adventures in disguise.

The pirate's cove now has a hard floor on the number of adventures it takes to get the dictionary. You have to get the lovely adventures for X adventures (maybe 10, I haven't kept up with the spading), then you have to get the drunk adventure once (unless you can't drink), then it starts rolling for the dictionary. It also has a ceiling on the number of adventures you spend there before getting the dictionary. This was a temporary change to lessen RNG variance and to soften the blow. That blow being the pirate's cove will take more adventures than in NS11 when the new content arrives, but the same adventures as the modified "floor/ceiling" version we have now.

The pirate's cove change will be accompanied by a global event to explain it. Potential profit, goons.

The Cove thing is probably true, but I can't speak on that with authority. Be warned, the Pirate's Cove revamp is going to be a lot bigger than they initially stated. I'd be surprised if people will be able to finish it off in the same number of adventures they currently can.

El Dia interrupted it a bit, and the IotM development which I have to do tomorrow is going to interrupt it a little more, but we're working overtime getting the last stretch of the pirate stuff done. Dev's excited about it, so I think it's gonna be worth the wait.

I could really use a good way to make meat, but so far adventuring in the right spots (and the occasional reward from quests) have given me a decent amount of meat. I just don't know what I would sell if I had a store, nothing I have seems that profitable.

It doesn't help that I don't really know what I'm doing.

Here's a site that tracks mall purchases and keeps a short history of an item's cost history: http://kol.coldfront.net/index.php/content/view/245 Be warned, it is easy to trick the numbers by buying overpriced crap from your own mall store repeatedly. A bit of common sense and knowledge of past trends goes a long way in making that site useful.

Knowledge of new event mechanics is a sure-fire way to make decent meat, especially now with (1) pirates and (2) Crimbo. By getting one or two semirares a day, you can net an extra six figures, much more meat than you'd earn in the adventures lost to the (1 or 2) fortune cookies eaten. http://kol.coldfront.net/thekolwiki/index.php/Semi_rare

(Apologies in advance to anyone trying to corner the market.) For instance, the power players are currently trying their damnedest to be some of the first to get the cursed pirate outfit. This requires an expenditure of millions of meat worth of pieces of 13 and item-drop boosters. While there aren't any semi-rares that increase item drops, there is one that grants +10 lbs to your familiar, and these people would be using as fat a fairy as they can get.

If you need meat for a store, kmail me in-game (Robot Porn) and I'll get you some startup funds. You'd be surprised how much meat a store will net you for very little effort. It's the best 50,000 meat you'll ever spend.

If you think the familiar is awesome, just hatch one and keep a few hatchlings. I predict a good bit of competition for high-end collections, because the type of person who has lots of meat in KoL is probably the kind of person who "relates" to Portal and thinks it's the best thing since System Shock 2.

Unless there is some kind of trick to min-maxing stats for scaling encounters that I do not know about, I really don’t want to have to sit there clicking the attack button over and over again.

I stole this explanation from JLE on the KoL forums:

The secret of monsters with scaled stats has been known for quite some time.

1. The monster's POWER (muscle) scales to your MOXIE. This also determines how many stats you get from the monster when you kill it... but it also determines how much harder the monster hits you.

2. Its DEFENCE (moxie) scales to your MUSCLE. Its hit points scale to your hit points, which are dependent on your muscle.

this is to say: if it "scales at +X", then its Power will be Your Moxie + X, and its Defence is Your Muscle + X.

This means that:

(1) If you are a Moxie class using a Ranged Weapon of any kind, you want to hit the monster. Therefore your moxie must be higher than its defence, so your moxie must be higher than your muscle. The Vivala Mask is what's ruining the original poster's chances.

(2) If you want to do a lot of damage with Moxious Maneuver, then you want your moxie to be a LOT higher than its defence, therefore a LOT higher than your muscle.

(3) Myst classes have their spells.

(4) Muscle classes... Turtle Tamers have Spectral Snapper, which automatically hits and does scaling damage based on Muscle. Seal Clubbers now have their LTS back: this depends on your Muscle versus its defence, but with a bonus which means basically it will always hit a scaling monster unless that monster has skill-blocking powers (as the NS used to), because the effective muscle, counting the bonus, is guaranteed to be higher than the monster's defence.

(5) If you want a lot of stats from a scaling monster, you want high moxie (and low muscle, so as to kill it more easily). If you want not to get hit too hard by it, you want low moxie (but still low muscle, so it doesn't have too many hit points.) Muscle classes will want an equalizer potion if they can get/make one: Moxie classes will NOT want it: Myst classes may want one, depending on whether their priority is getting more stats or surviving more easily.

Check this list for the drinks that grant 1 drunk point. There are only two such drinks above primitive beer in adventure gain and they cost a fuckton more than primitive beer (to the point of being useless for farming). Optimal drinking will leave you either 1 or 2 drunk points below 14 (or 19), and you'll need to fill it with something before you launch yourself over the cap and get falling-down drunk. For farming purposes (where you'll likely be level 12 or above) primitive beer is the best filler drink.

If you are at all concerned with getting hardcore rewards as quickly as possible, you'll want to do a hardcore run first (lead-in), then six (or seven) Bad Moons, then five (or six) more hardcore runs, then six hardcore oxy, then six normal (for tattoos). The Bad Moon runs will be a good prep for hardcore, and you'll have a decent number of skills when you're done, which will speed up your hardcore runs. Once again, this is only if you're concerned with rewards, like equipment and tattoos.

I used to play a lot of normal, then switched to hardcore. Part of me wishes I had just started hardcore, but then I wouldn't have this cushy skillset to rely on now that I'm all, "gently caress this, I'm doing casual."

Just remember, you can always drop hardcore/oxy/BM if you don't like it. Hardcore will teach you how to play hardcore well. Normal will teach you how much you hate the goddamn MacGuffin quest and you want it to die in a fire. And, eventually, it'll teach you how to play Normal well. I'd suggest trying both out for yourself, because they're both fun. (Can't chime in on the Bad Moon experience just yet.)

You can time your semi-rare adventures by only using one fortune cookie, if the semi-rare you want isn't in a terrible location. Of course, this is only useful if eating a cookie would prevent you from eating another, better food.

If you're farming, you'll lose a maximum 2*(meat per adventure) and a minimum 0 meat in exchange for 1 fullness. Since you've already eaten a cookie, you'll have either 14 or 19 fullness left, neither of which is a particularly round number when the popular farming foods are 3, 5, and 6 fullness each. You'll probably lose 1-2 adventures by eating a cookie (or a precious chance at a tiny plastic, if that's your sort of thing). So, in the end, it's down to priorities.

3+5+6 = 14. Hmm. I'm not going to try to figure this one out to a specific number, really. I prefer 1 cookie, but it does add a small amount of hassle.

-edit- They marked the bookshelf un-seeable in bad moon earlier today. No, you can't use it in BM.

It involves a bit of trust, but there are some people doing it who obviously value good will and whatnot over 200k meat or whatever the fee is.

If anyone is farming the Hippy/Frat War, someone on the main forums linked me to this tool: http://www.acme.com/jef/kol/warmeat/ It uses Coldfront Marketplace values (averaged over a few days) for all of its mall calculations, so the possibility for manipulation exists. It should help if you're not sure what to spend your quarters/dimes on or whether to mall or smash the equipment. Just make sure to check the mall prices at the last second if you really, really want to be sure you're maximizing everything. I am lazy so I will probably use it.
