Once authorities on the island of sweden decide they want to open your package, you pay a flat fee. It's pretty retarded but this is the only the second time I've got hit by it in probably 100+ shipments from US in the last 10 years.

I'm not sure if he even counts as punk anymore, but Frank Turner warmed up the Olympic opening ceremony. Makes sense, since he's so British. It's still pretty awesome. Hearing God Save The Queen and London Calling during the ceremony was a bit weirder.

Hell yes. Can't stop listening to 'Obituaries' or 'Gates', and I'm paying too much money to see them open for Pennywise later this year.

This new Make Do & Mend EP is a bit underwhelming, though. Reminds me of forgettable 90s music I can't quite remember.

BTMI! is going on a month-long tour in August. Their tour coincidentally falls fairly well with a cross-country vacation I'm going on. I'll be seeing them in Las Vegas, NV for sure, but a few days before that they're doing an acoustic show at the Grand Canyon. No specific details about it yet, but I'll probably be passing through there around the same time so I'm going to try to see that too. Anyone else planning to go to these shows? Or any of them? I saw them live for the first time in Atlanta last Halloween and they were a great, so definitely going to see them again.

Look!

Yay, I got to see Verse live! I never expected them to reform so that was pretty great to get the chance to see them now. They were really good, the show was in a tiny room with no proper AC and hot+humid as gently caress, but the kids in the crowd were going crazy like I've never seen them do around here, haha.

Unfortunately the new album lacks a lot in intensity in my opinion, but the songs they played live came still across pretty well (except for one). I haven't seen any discussion of the album in this thread, did nobody find it interesting? I haven't really listened to it much yet, but definitely rate it lower than the old stuff. Maybe it'll grow on me more with time, though.

Still excited about the concert, drat Verse are awesome!

I can't stand these vocals. Instrumentally, this album is really good, but his voice is just a little too whiny for me. I usually like most twinkly emo, too.

Topshelf Records have been loving killing it for the past couple years. I'm not super big YBI! but they aren't bad by any stretch. The new My Fictions song rules and their style is something I haven't been into since I was a teenager. I absolutely love the new Sirs LP too, got my preorder in the mail the other day.

If you like the Buzzcocks then probably the easiest next step is to check out more of the early punk bands. Obviously there are the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and the Ramones, but I would also check out Blondie, the Dead Boys, the Dictators, Rocket from the Tombs (I cannot stress this one enough), and Stiff Little Fingers (I stress this one even more). Listen to the Stooges while you're at it.

For dirty-but-melodic that isn't early punk, there's a lot to go with, although a lot of bands started out sounding really dirty and got progressively tighter as their experience and production qualities improved. In any case, here are some of my favorites for dirty-but-melodic.

The Dead Kennedys- Holiday in Cambodia. Worth listening to is other well known 80's hardcore, like Minor Threat, Black Flag, and the Bad Brains, but these bands aren't as melodic. Their British counterparts tend to have a bit more melody though.

GBH- Generals

UK Subs- Fascist Regime

Other poo poo:

(Early) Anti-Flag- I'm Being Watched by the CIA

(Early) Bouncing Souls- Born to Lose

Violent Society (shamelessly plugging a sort of local band)- Sarge's Last Stand

the Vandals- The People That Are Going To Hell

The Dickies (because they make me giggle)- Stukas Over Disneyland

The Misfits- Where Eagles Dare

Operation Ivy- The Crowd

Or hey, maybe Oi! Punk is your thing.

Sham 69- Hersham Boys

Cock Sparrer- Argy Bargy

The Business- England 5, Germany 1

Anyway, that's probably enough to tide you over for now. Listen, explore. If modern hardcore is more your thing then ask around the thread, but I go for more dated stuff. Whatever suits you.

Hobbit, those are all solid recommendations, especially Stiff Little Fingers. Their first two albums are gold. Operation Ivy's The Crowd is also a fantastic song. Similar favorites of mine are Reagan Youth's Degenerated and Dead Boys' Sonic Reducer. Finally, outside of their more straightforward Oi! stuff, the Business have some more melodic songs, like Streets Where You Live and Out In The Cold.

If we're talking about classic Oi! bands, can't forget Cockney Rejects, Blitz, Angelic Upstarts and Funeral Dress. The Blood, though not quite Oi!, is a great early punk band that's often overlooked. The Oppressed might be a little too simplistic by modern standards, but they still have a few decent songs, like No Justice and The AFA Song.

drat it! I knew I forgot someone I was planning on including, and it was the Dead Boys. Although when it comes to the Rocket from the Tombs/Dead Boys/Pere Ubu band trio I tend to gravitate more towards RFTT and Pere Ubu. I had a chance to see the surviving and reformed members of RFTT play a show last year and ended up missing it, which I think I will always regret now that Cheetah Chrome is retired and another tour is unlikely.
To make it worse, I actually study punk, especially early punk, as an historical subject on the side at my university, and RFTT is about as early punk as it gets
