Any thoughts or ways I could save myself some money? Suggestions for good optics?

Stop stealing my ideas.
installed a buffer, auto bolt release and a new magazine release today. After a new extended bolt handle and target hammer I'll be more or less done with the internals.

I'm planning on both irons and a little x4 scope. I don't know anything about scopes either.

Damm. Now I have to buy a second one, but with darker wood.

Maybe a third, please no one post a picture of one with those AK looking stocks. The something "-plinker" maybe?

For a second I thought "poo poo, a left-handed 10/22?" Then I realized the "Ruger" on the action was mirror-imaged. drat you.

I could use a scope recommendation for use on a rifle with this mounting system that allows the use of irons. My budget is less than 100$.

those rings are poo poo, they're too high

if you want to use irons as well, get some GOOD quick detach rings.

I like that, but I really wish somebody would make a wood M1 carbine style stock with upper handguard and peep sights for the 10/22.

I guess you could come close with a normal 10/22 stock, a handguard (either a metal one or a home-crafted wood one) and tech-sights.

I like high scopes (big head) and the stocks I'm looking at include either a very tall cheek piece or an adjustable one. If you can link to good quick detach rings at a reasonable price than I'm interested, though.

'Course I'm tempted to just buy one of these (it would probably end up on an airsoft gun but it'd be fun for a while.)

Somewhere on rimfirecentral.com's forums theres a thread called ultimate 10/22 photos, somewhere in the 100 pages of photos is an awesome M1 paratrooper carbine replica a guy made with a 10/22 action. You'll have to search for it though, it took me forever to find it.

You might want to edit in a portion that states that you dont need to remove the barrel every time you clean.

Done, even though I do remove it every time I clean. Think there is any value in a re-assembly guide?

Eh, The one thing that would have really helped me out would back when I first got my 10/22 would have been a pictoral guide for how to re-assemble the trigger group.

Sure, I got a secret. More than one...

I figured I'd post here instead of the other thread, but I need some tips for my new 10/22

1) Did I do something wrong reassembling my 10/22? The trigger assembly wiggles slighty when attached to the receiver

2)are rail mounts as easy to install as they look? They all say "line up with the factory receiver holes", but I get a bad feeling about that. On that topic, how do you guys feel about BSA scopes, I've seen a few favorable mentions here. I'd need something like this and this, correct? Why are the rings so expensive by themselves?

thrawn86

Sure, I got a secret. More than one...

How do you guys feel about these see-thru weaver scope mounts? it seems like that would put the scope up awfully high. I saw earlier that the leupold seethru rings were crappy, but this seethru weaver doesn't look quite as high. On the same note, with just a flat base (no rings or scope) installed, would I be able to use irons?

also, any suggestions for scopes under 50$ or so? I'm certainly not hitting 1" groups at 300yds or whatever the hell is considered 'good' around here (I do most of my shooting standing anyway) but I figured I go ahead and start doing research and get everything ordered while I continued to learn.

I tried a set of see-through rings once on my 10/22. The problem is the scope base itself obscures the irons even without the rings. To make them effective, you'd have to use some aftermarket sights, like the AR-style tech-sights, to get them elevated enough to use with the rings.

Try a Simmons. I even found a matte silver to match my rifle. You can find these reasonably priced on the net. I got mine from cheaperthandirt.com. Its held zero through two moves and about three years, with minimal adjustment between drastic ammo changes. It took some loctite to convince the rings to stop coming loose every couple months, but now there's no problem.

3-9x32mm 22 Mag Rimfire Riflescope & Rings, Truplex Reticle, 1/4 MOA, Silver Matte for $39, less if you're a member.

EDIT: They have a lot of choices

weaver scope mounts?

I've got Weaver (I think) see through mounts on a 10/22, never used the one you referenced, but the view through it seems a little tight. It's been mentioned in TFR before that using see through mounts raises the scope so high that a good cheek weld is difficult. I can attest to the validity of this assertion. I'm keeping the higher rings because, even though the set up is less than optimal I like them and use this setup to practice using irons.

thrawn86 posted:

I have to give props to a $50 Simmons 3-9x40 recently purchased from Cabella's. It lived on my 10/22 for a few months then got moved to a Savage 110 in 30-06. It held zero during my sighting sessions and dropped two whitetail this season. I used this scope a lot for glassing over four days, it was crisp in varying light and never had a problem with fogging. As for longevity, the jury is still out.

Bushnell makes decent inexpensive scopes. The Tasco 2.5x-10x mil-dot scope is pretty decent and quite inexpensive. Focus and parallellallellax (just loving with ya) adjusts down to under 7 yards. Swift and Leapers round out the list of folks making workable inexpensive scopes that will last longer than a week or so.

Is Ruger phasing out some models of 10/22? The black/blue model can't be ordered off the website, and the black/stainless model is out of stock. Are we going to be stuck with wood models only, or is this just a result of lots of early Christmas shopping?

Im feeling pretty dumb.

I took my 10/22 down for cleaning and I cant get it back together. Well, together in a way that functions.

Specifically, I cant get the bolt hold open to release. I can work the bolt fine, but if i try to use the hold open I cant then get to to close without taking the trigger group out again. I have looked at a few guides and cant figure out whats going on.

Free box of fancy .22lr ammo ($12 limit please) to the first person who can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Did you make sure the spring is on top of the bolt catch and below the ejector pin with both pieces pointing forward? you can get that thing in backwards and then the spring just kinda wanders around inside the action, being useless.

As a follow-up to my "where have all the synthetics gone?" post, I called about a dozen local purveyors of guns today. NOBODY had a synthetic-stocked 10/22 except for one place about 20 minutes away. When I got there, it turns out that, though the computer says they have one, they can't actually find it anywhere.

Oh well, bought one with wood furniture that came with upgraded sights for no extra money. No, I don't know why.

fake edit: this one. Website says it should cost me more, but I'm not complaining!

I've had great luck with mine. Two years and countless thousands of rounds later, it still locks up tight and I haven't noticed an impact in my offhand accuracy (which is how I usually shoot anyway so no problem).
