Sorry about the myspace link, the audio is a little off but worth watching anyway. Animal Weapons http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M8iBzl9x80 Its about how different animals hunt. Nothing groundbreaking or overly cerebral but its still neat. Art A very NWS/NMS documentary on Shock Art First part: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yr1vSib610c Quality is poo poo. It's part of a series on modern art from the BBC that ran in the late 90's. Really cool show for and worth looking for too. Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked - history channel doc narrated by Keith David http://www.veoh.com/browse/videos/c...v798746HqSd3hmz Once Upon A Time The Super Heroes - haven't watched this yet, just found it while looking for the one above. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySOOLp_SoDw The Men Without Fear: Creating Daredevil - an amazing special feature from the crappy DD movie DVD, it's an in depth look at a single character with interviews from about 15 different important creators. The Frank Miller segment is especially awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbdGlRQ4Xq4 Comic Book Confidential - artsy doc from 1988 focusing more on independent comics (though there're interviews with much younger Stan Lee and Frank Miller) Also contains some cool archival footage from the 1950s when a senate sub committee on juvenile delinquency was looking at their content. William M. Gaines (founder of Mad magazine) testifies in front of them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNM_2-YznzM ARTISTS Power of art: Caravaggio Very cool documentary about one of hell of a painter. I just wish there was a documentary about his girlfriends dad who walked WAY further. Kim Peek - The Real Rain Man http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2T45r5G3kA Fifty-four-year-old Kim Peek is arguably the world's most famous savant and the inspiration behind the Oscar-winning film, Rain Man. He was diagnosed as mentally retarded at birth by a neurologist who spared him five minutes on his way to a golf game, and his parents were advised to place him in an institution. But his father, Fran, refused to give up on him and under his care Kim has developed a memory that, without equal, has made him a household name in the USA. Country Boys[b/] http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/front...untryboys/view/ It's about these 2 teenage boys growing up in Kentucky. I thought it'd be boring, but I watched the whole thing and loved it. [b]The Hawking paradox http://video.google.nl/videoplay?do...earch&plindex=5 A bit older, but insightful documentary about Stephen Hawkings life and position in the scientific world. It's specifically about a paradox he created with a theory on black holes. The Story of Marjoe. http://video.google.com/videoplay?d...629120699935619 "Academy Award-winning 1972 documentary called Marjoe, that follows the 'farewell tour' of Marjoe Gortner, a Pentecostal evangelical revivalist preacher." I wish there was a bit more commentary and a little less preacher footage but still interesting. 7 plus Seven Give me a child until he is seven and i will give you the man. The first in a series which follows the devlopment of 14 individuals from different backgrounds in the UK. In this episode they're introduced at 7. The Way of All Flesh, a one-off by Adam Curtis from 1997 about the story of Henrietta Lacks. It's about an hour long and unfortunately a VHS transfer up on Google Video, so it's not the best quality, but compelling once you get into it. BIOLOGY The Human Animal - The Language of the Body (1994, Part One) You can find Part two by searching on google video. "A Personal View of the Human Species by Desmond Morris. This episode focuses on the planet's most advanced animal, beginning with a look at how man communicated before the evolution of language. Some gestures and expressions are so ingrained that we have not been able to erase them from our vocabulary." Inside nature's giants The most amazing nature doc i've seen for ages. Looking at the anatomies and evolutionary history of an elephant, a whale, a crocodile and a giraffe so far. It's mostly focused on the (pretty gory) dissection of an actual animal and gets away from the feeding and loving stories you've seen a million times before in nature documentaries. It's on Channel 4s on demand thing if you are in the UK. CRIME/SCANDELS Big Bucks: The Press Your Luck Scandal "This is the story of Press Your Luck's all-time biggest winner, Michael Larson. Michael was an unemployed ice cream truck driver from Ohio who had something planned to beat all the other Press Your Luck contestants and break the game show bank." This 1984 event marked the biggest win of any TV game show until "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" came out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UN0LvFZMKq8 The Riviera Job In 1976, the Societe General Bank on the French Riviera contained more gold, money and gems than the top ten banks in Paris combined. No criminal would dare attempt the job, until Albert Spaggiari came to town and pulled of the greatest heist in European history. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4KU...ex=0&playnext=1 A Smuggler Supreme In the 1980s Brian ODea was a hugely successful drug smuggler, profiting over $100 million annually. After a failed attempt to catch ODea, federal prosecutors took three years building a case. During that time ODea turned over a new leaf: he left the smuggling business, kicked his cocaine habit and became an inspirational speaker to drug addicts. Nevertheless, ODea was charged and sentenced for smuggling more than 75 tonnes of marijuana into the U.S. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wxap...ex=0&playnext=1 The Bandit Queen Judy Amar was the mastermind behind over 500 near perfect heists in Florida in the late 80s. Amar had a hotel room stocked with wigs, clothing and make-up that she would use to disguise herself. She changed cars every week, and license plates daily. Her success as a burgler infuriated the police for over a decade. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvAr...ex=0&playnext=1 A Day at the Races Chris Harn found a way to turn a million to one longshot into a 3 million dollar sure thing. The question is, how did he do it? This program examines how computer whiz Chris Harn hacked his way into winning more than three million dollars in the Breeders Cup—the Super Bowl of horse races. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTNZ...ex=0&playnext=1 The Bikie Wars Enjoy. Recently in Australia we have had a crackdown on biker gangs. It's something that has been very interesting to watch in the news and although I have a really strong opinion on what has really been happening I'm not going to go into it here. This short documentary gives a bit of background info and some current news and is really interesting whichever side of the argument you are on. Situation Critical - The North Hollywood Shootout http://www.moviesfoundonline.com/si...od_shootout.php "One of the most dramatic police gun battles ever waged on American soil. On February 28, 1997, two notorious criminals - dubbed the High Incident Bandits - carry out an armed robbery inside a Hollywood bank. They are spotted by undercover officers, and police act quickly to surround the bank. But the bandits are armed with thousands of imported steel- plated bullets, full body armor and five machine guns, including three AK-47s. Go inside the violent stand-off." The Fake Trade Great Channel 4 documentary about the hugeness of the industry of fakes in China - it even stretches to tea and eggs! However, it's not all a matter of getting a cheap Louis Vuitton bag; there are serious consequences of funding this industry that could potentially affect the whole world. Ross Kemp goes around the world and does his best to meet up with gangs and violent groups in the given area to find out what motivates them, that makes them unique, and what can be done to stop the violence they cause. Her insights from past pandemics are suddenly more relevant than ever. ![]() "Can't Stop Eating". It's about a couple of people who have "Prader-Willi syndrome", which is apparently a real genetic disease, and not just a label slapped on stupid fat people. It's an interesting look into a disease I'd never heard of before, but the "Folks with various mental disabilities dating party" was a little hard to watch. It's like if four- year-olds were fully sexually mature and wanted to get married. Perhaps fortunately one of the symptoms of Prader-Willi syndrome is infertility. The Andes Plane Crash Survivors If you've ever seen or heard of the movie "Alive!", then you know the story of the rugby team from Uraguay who's plane crashed in the Andes mountains back in the 70's. Initially, 29 of the 45 passengers survived and stayed on the mountain waiting for help. As time went on and the search was called off, more people started to die from exposure and their injuries. The remaining group was forced to cannibalize the deceased and eventually 16 made it off of the mountain. This documentary is that story told by the survivors themselves. It's all in Spanish but is subtitled in English. It's absolutely loving fantastic. I was up until 2am the other night after I got watching it. From the introduction to Part 1: "Both [the Islamists and Neoconservatives] were idealists who were born out of the failure of the liberal dream to build a better world. And both had a very similar explanation for what caused that failure. These two groups have changed the world, but not in the way that either intended. Together, they created todayÃÂÃÂs nightmare vision of a secret, organized evil that threatens the world. A fantasy that politicians then found restored their power and authority in a disillusioned age. And those with the darkest fears became the most powerful. Specifically, the film claims four major contractors -- Blackwater, K.B.R.-Halliburton, CACI and Titan -- are over-billing the U.S. government and doing substandard work while endangering the lives of American soldiers and private citizens. The documentary contends these companies are composed of ex-military and ex-government workers who unethically help their companies get and keep enormous contracts and milk the American taxpayer. The film crew interviews military servicemen, watchdog group affiliates, and former employees of Halliburton. Pallywood: "According to Palestinian Sources..." Uganda Rising Trailer: http://www.ugandarising.com/trailers.html For two decades, the Acholi people of Northern Uganda have been caught in a civil war between a rebel group whose main objective is inhumane terror and a government whose military response has often increased misery and suffering. Over one and a half million people have been displaced into camps and over 25,000 children have been abducted to be used as soldiers and sex slaves. And yet through it all, every day across Acholi-land something remarkable happens. Against a backdrop of dismal statistics, miniscule opportunity and unpredictable terror, in a part of Uganda forgotten by the world, children who have never known peace, face the day as if to live this way is normal, as if they still believe in the future. These children are the embodiment of resilience and hope. This film is the story of Uganda, her stolen children, and the fight to be free. It tells the story of the only heavy metal band in Iraq, called Acrassicauda. The two directors don't ask the most poignant or intelligent questions, but it's an interesting documentary about the band's journey and hardships as well as general life in Iraq during the time of the American invasion and then their civil war. Even if you don't like heavy metal, I still thought the thoughts of young people on the situation in Iraq was a nice departure from having foreigners trying to dispense their opinion without really knowing the culture. The film talks about Karen Carpenter's life (and death) as an anorexic and bulimic during the Carpenters' explosive success in the 70s. Blue Planet: Seas of Life I haven't watched the whole series yet, but their one about the deep ocean life was one of the craziest things I've ever seen. This documentary explores the depths of the ocean that we have jsut recently been able to get to. The other parts of the series talk about different aspects of aquatic life, but the deep is especially amazing. http://dsc.discovery.com/convergenc...blueplanet.html

Why the gently caress did you have to link to that MissJackie video? No amount of drugs can ever make me unhear that. To add something slightly useful: Cosmos: A Personal Voyage: Episode One quote:Cosmos: A Personal Voyage is a thirteen-part television series written by Carl Sagan, Ann Druyan, and Steven Soter, with Sagan as global presenter. It was executive-produced by Adrian Malone, produced by David Kennard, Geoffrey Haines-Stiles and Gregory Andorfer, and directed by the producers and David Oyster, Richard Wells, Tom Weidlinger, and others. It covered a wide range of scientific subjects including the origin of life and a perspective of our place in the universe. The series was first broadcast by the Public Broadcasting Service in 1980, and was the most widely watched series in the history of American public television until 1990's The Civil War, and is still the most widely watched PBS series in the world.[1] It won an Emmy and a Peabody Award and has since been broadcast in more than 60 countries and seen by over 600 million people, according to the Science Channel. A book to accompany the series was also published. http://video.google.com/videoplay?d...earch&plindex=7 I am just the biggest loving Carl Sagan fan girl. Not necessarily documentaries like you guys have posted so far, but I really like Going to Pieces and Bloodsucking Cinema, a look at slasher films and vampire moves, respectively. They have clips of various movies from each genre, interviews with cast and crew (Tom Savini is a very funny man ) and also a look at the opposition to such movies. They're probably about 90 minutes, produced by STARZ and just a fun look back on a part of movie history that many overlook because of its content.

The Day the Universe Changed and Connections http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Da...niverse_Changed The series' primary focus is on the effect of advances in science and technology on western philosophy. The title comes from the philosophical idea that the universe essentially only exists as you perceive it; therefore, if you change your perception of the universe, you have changed the universe itself. To illustrate this idea, James Burke tells the various stories of important scientific discoveries and technological advances and how they fundamentally altered how western civilization perceives the world. The series runs in roughly chronological order, from around the beginning of the Middle Ages to the present. The Story of One http://www.pbs.org/previews/storyof1/ The story of the number one is the story of Western civilization. The Root of All Evil? is a television documentary, written and presented by Richard Dawkins, in which he argues that the world would be better off without religion. Part 1 Part 2 The Enemies of Reason Is it rational that the dead can communicate with the living and give sound advice on how they should live their lives? What about sticking pins into your body to free the flow of Chi energy and cure your illness? Or the bending of spoons using your mind alone? Is that rational? Richard Dawkins doesn’t think so, and feels it is his duty to expose those areas of belief that exist without scientific proof, yet manage to hold the nation under their spell. He will take on the world’s leading proponents in their field of expertise, meet the victims who have used them and expose the history of the movements – from the charlatans who have milked these practices to the experiments and testing that have failed to produce conclusive results. The Dissapearing Male http://video.google.com/videoplay?d...ale+documentary The Disappearing Male is a CBC documentary about one of the most important, and least publicized, issues facing the human species: the toxic threat to the male reproductive system. At the same time, boys are now far more at risk of suffering from ADHD, autism, Tourette's syndrome, cerebral palsy, and dyslexia. The Disappearing Male takes a close and disturbing look at what many doctors and researchers now suspect are responsible for many of these problems: a class of common chemicals that are ubiquitous in our world. Found in everything from shampoo, sunglasses, meat and dairy products, carpet, cosmetics and baby bottles, they are called "hormone mimicking" or "endocrine disrupting" chemicals and they may be starting to damage the most basic building blocks of human development.« Looking for the Genetic Roots of the Japanese Looked at DNA from a ancient japanese mummy, before the asian people started coming to japan from china korea etc. They then goto Colombia I think and look at the DNA of a indigenous person there and find that its the closest match in the world. This is one of my all time favorite documentaries. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ws2h9YKIFGw Start with the first section and watch the other five, it details the Islamic journey to Hajj, but the catch to this series is that the individuals involved are from totally different backgrounds. One a Texan woman, the other a South African radio jockey, and a Indonesian powerful businessman. This really unveiled what Islam really meant, despite criticisms of the religion, watching this special really changed the image of a religion we hardly know next to nothing about.

No End In Sight http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0912593/ "Chronological look at the fiasco in Iraq, especially decisions made in the spring of 2003 - and the backgrounds of those making decisions - immediately following the overthrow of Saddam: no occupation plan, an inadequate team to run the country, insufficient troops to keep order, and three edicts from the White House announced by Bremmer when he took over: no provisional Iraqi government, de-Ba'athification, and disbanding the Iraqi armed services. The film has chapters (from History to Consequences), and the talking heads are reporters, academics, soldiers, military brass, and former Bush-administration officials, including several who were in Baghdad in 2003." Iraq For Sale: The War Profiteers http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0815181/ "Documentary portraying the actions of U.S. corporate contractors in the U.S.-Iraq war. Interviews with employees and former employees of such companies as Halliburton, CACI, and KBR suggest that government cronyism is behind apparent "sweetheart" deals that give such contractors enormous freedom to profit from supplying support and material to American troops while providing little oversight. Survivors of employees who were killed discuss the claim that the companies cared more for profit than for the welfare of their own workers, and soldiers indicate that the quality of services provided is sub-standard and severely in contradiction to the comparatively huge profits being generated. Also depicted are the unsuccessful attempts by the filmmakers to get company spokesmen to respond to the charges made by the interviewees." Planet Earth (not really a documentary, but a fantastic mini-series) http://dsc.discovery.com/convergenc...anet-earth.html "40 camera teams were shooting at over 200 different locations all over the world for more than 5 years to get the pictures seen in the series." godfather fucked around with this message at Nov 21, 2007 around 05:51 |

I just finished watching it and, while heartbreaking, it really does a good job of showing the spirit that exists in people like myself and others who want to preserve our rapidly deteriorating history. It appears that this was made in the early 90's and since then, the importance of film preservation has really made leaps and bounds in influencing the right people with the money to throw towards this cause. More and more "lost" films are being preserved every year and being made available again to the world.
