Had a question that I wasn't sure warranted a new thread. I basically want to make a stencil and apply it to my guitar, but my knowledge of various paints is none, and I want to gather as much know-how as possible. I play an ltd ex-400, here's a picture;![]() It's a very glossy paint that isn't really reflected in that picture, but that was the best picture I could find for surface. Figured someone in this thread would have possibly already done this and might have some info on making paints not conflict etc.

ekuNNN posted:Actually I live in the Netherlands, and I think they were so quick about it because my town is very graffiti free. Ahh, Netherlands. I have only been there twice. Once in 2005, when we only visited Amsterdam, and once in 1974, when I was slightly younger. Yes, the Netherlands can also be considered "Tidy", as can the Scandinavian countries. There was very little in the way of graffiti in any of those countries when we visited, Which is both good and bad. I hate tagging, but I like actual wall art. Tagging makes me think of a human version of a dog pissing on a tree to mark its territory...

Best Friend posted:I hate to say this, you probably wont be able to get a good stencil on that without stripping first. This is likely true. He can try and stencil right on top of the factory paint and seal it with several coats afterwards, but the stencil will still probably come off on any part you touch regularly.

I have a stenciling quandary: while stenciling fine lettering onto a previously stenciled surface, the ink bled out of the stencil like crazy. Any tips to avoid this? Sorry I don't have pictures. It's a one-sie (bodysuit) for a baby, and we're putting a control panel on the front like the baby is a robot, and these are the labels for the buttons. So layer one was the a square panel, and this was lettering on top of the panel. The fabric dye is labeled 'fabric screen printing ink'. Maybe this is more a screen printing question than a stencil question, but anything you might be able to think of would be great. Thanks!

MDR posted:That's what I figured, just not sure how well I could strip it and apply a stencil without it looking totally mismatch, i'll have to look into it more You could strip it pretty well if you do chemical stripping. There's this nasty poo poo called AirCraft Remover by Kleen Strip that will eat the finish right off the guitar (You can get it at AutoZone). What you should do take the neck off (if it has a bolt-on neck) or cover it because this stuff is really mean. The best thing to do is wrap the body up in a plastic garbage bag and let the stripper do it's work for about 18 hours. Flip the body, repeat. This treatment shouldn't do any damage to the wood. After stripping, sand the body clean, and you have a clean body with no finish, ready to be repainted. As for putting a stencil on it, I would use high-end heavy duty paints like auto spray paint to get a really nice clean gloss, and finish it up with some laquer and nitrocellulose finish from http://www.reranch.com

This was my latest stencil here: I did (very stupidly) a large Yeah Yeah Yeahs pirate ship and the process was a bitch. Because I was dumb I just hand-drew it on 2 large construction papers and taped them together. It was very dumb, but I liked the finish product .![]() ![]() Though my favorite is hanging up on my wall now... ![]()

I made my first stencil the other day. It's Godot. I didn't really think about what I was making, heh, so I needed white spray (because it's connected by the darks). I don't have any action shots. It was a fun experience. I'd love to make some more. Preferably after finding myself an x-actoknife that isn't some big unwieldy thing used primarily for ripping cardboard boxes open. I needed to be way too careful around the bridges / thin lines in the hair.

I've found as long as the razor is razor sharp it's significantly easier no matter the size of the knife.

It's a chain of stores called Action. There is one in Hilversum, near my school. http://www.action.nl/default.aspx There's two of them in Amsterdam! Anyway, they sell loads of cheap stuff. Yesterday I got two cans of spray glue, three masks and an A3 cutting mat for 6 euro's, I'm so happy I found this store ![]() They have some pretty big canvasses too (a2 and bigger) and weird long ones, all under 5 euro's I think.

I just started doing some stencils over the weekend and I am already addicted. These two are really simple and I want to do some more complex ones now.![]() ![]() The last one here I made to advertise for an art blog I run/draw for. I am thinking of using it for tagging and making shirts but I wanted to know if you guys have any suggestions for how best to approach doing two layers of different color when making shirts. Any advice is appreciated.

![]() Heres my first t-shirt stencil. Its of the new joker. I didn't like the thickness and texture of the acrylic paint i used, so i'm going to remake this. I need a good thick paint thats smooth and even that works well with shirts, and a stronger material to make a stencil out of, but still give me the ability to make small details.

I've enjoyed Inkscape on Linux, but on OSX, some builds have been crashy and because they run in X11, asian font support is a pain in the rear end to get working correctly. It generates reasonably clear SVG most of the time, which is good if you like to tinker by hand. And I'd be able to use it to drive my massive plotter that I want to use for stencil cutting if I ever got around to soldering up the cable for it.
