It's kinda cool, the idea is really old though, but it's not for you, so that's acceptable...design wise, the type is kind of offset, and I would love to see something else that had the center figure looking sad, like a tear or something. Other than that, yeah, it's kinda cool.

The distinction might be important because it looks like they're going to ban things in "classes", and other laws like the weapons acts ban e.g. only commercially made shanghais but not homebrewn ones. ) Sorry about that, I misunderstood and thought you were calling me out or something But yeah, usually I just say mop when referring to homemade stuff like emptied out shoe polish bottles with your own ink and the nib cut out so you get mad drips. But yeah, if they ban all that stuff or cops know what to look for then you only got one other alternative: beat it. Although if you're out catching tags or throwing stuff up with paint / markers / mops / streaks / stenciling / whatever then you should be prepared to be running from them anyway.

I have a question. I'm pretty decent at coming up with and cutting stencils, but I'd like to make some that last for more than one piece. For the more complicated ones I've been using transparencies and an exacto knife, because I can see through and line them up properly, and have had good results until I try to reuse it. Could it be that the spray adhesive I'm using to keep them flat (no overspray woo) is ruining the surface so they don't stick again? Sorry to just ask without any examples but I'm not at home and don't have my pics with me. I figured being plastic they'd work better than cardboard but I just don't know.

I think he means spray a black background and put the skull in white on top of that, so you've got a pirate flag thing going on. Also, that looks great Richbomb, I love that background you sprayed it on, works very well with the stencil.

This has been a really great thread, and I'm enjoying it immensely. I myself have been stenciling over the last four or five months, I've come to really enjoy it, and have been taking it more and more seriously ever since. Going through this thread I feel we have a lack of actual tutorial going on. It's not big deal, I just feel we could use a little more guiding, and a little less Hey-Look-What-I-Just-Did! Personally I would really love to see a tutorial on how we are doing stencils using multi-layers. I know we've posted links to stencilrevolution but really I feel their tutorials are kind of weak (could be better!). Also everybody I've talked to already is aware of the site. I'm not bashing, I'm just trying to justify a goon's guiding hand tutorial. It would be great if one of the more experienced stencilers on here gave us a photo step-by-step on how they spray one, because as I've found out recently, there is a lot to screw up with using more than three layers or so. I will share: This is what I've done recently of a friend of mine. ![]() It's a black and white layer, and four shades of grey. If I remember right. I made a lot of little mistakes here and there, and managed to salvage certain grey shades by respraying them. I use printable transparency film, and I didn't account for the fact that when I spray over one, it loses it's, uh, clearness. Thus making it harder and harder to line up correctly one over the other. It was okay for a first run, but I can't do it again as I can't see through them any longer to tell where I should align the layers. What makes this stencil special to me is I'm doing it on several layers of glass. I have a third layer I want to place on top of her to utilize in a way I'm not sure yet. Lesson learned #2. Paint peels off easily off of glass. Very, very lame for the end product. Managed to save some trouble spots. This is my recent project of another friend. I'm drawing this one off of a photo of her, which is a very new thing as I mostly use photoshop and my tablet. ![]() Probably four layers? We'll see. I have to turn her into an actual stencil now. Anyways it's nice to share. Keep it up guys, I'm loving this thread! Purple Drink fucked around with this message at May 24, 2008 around 03:48 |

I'm no doubt a lazy mother fucker, but if the stencil is too complicated and/or structurally unsound I edit it in the cutting out bit anyway. It would be literally impossible to put that much detail into box cardboard. Anyway you have your ways/morals and I have mine, in the end though we're both stealing a pirate flag.

I just felt like you weren't in a position to correct him, but I see that's not what you were doing. You should also try using something better than cardboard, and/or making the image bigger. Anything plastic is very good, and his skull is so super feasible to cut out. Also I would never spray his stencil unless he literally gave me the go ahead on this forum, because he may or may not have been serious when he said he was too scared to spray it. It's his, I'm not going to use it unless he's giving it away, also in which case I would never put my name or tag next to.

I followed the last thread and I figured I'd give it a go now. I have some time off and nothing to do. My main problem is that I'd like something easy to start out with. Any good places where one might find a lot of stencils up for grabs? I'm trying to find some of that temporary glue, which is proven hard to find for some reason. Another thing is that I remember in the old thread, somebody did a big rear end tree on their wall in their apartment. Anybody have that picture? or a similar stencil?

Hey guys. Great work by everyone, I'm very entertained and impressed. I just wanted to chime in a bit about t-shirts because I'm frankly surprised no one has mentioned this. If you're lazy and cheap, like me, plain spray paint works totally fine stenciled on shirts. Obviously, it won't have the exact same effect as fabric ink, that is to say it will be a little less opaque and more likely to over/underspray if you're not careful, but it doesn't have to be cured (just let it dry for half hour or so) and it's a lot less work than mixing up mediums and using rollers (in my opinion). However, this effect can be cool when it comes to the colors of spray paint showing up differently on differently colored garments. Also, if you don't feel like messing around with spray adhesive just get some latex gloves and hold the stencil down with your hands where you're spraying. Again, not a perfect method, but if it isn't obvious by now, this is how my dumb rear end stumbled on doing stencils on my own. Besides then you never have to worry about gunking up your work. I suppose this is the part where I should show some hard evidence that it works. First images are the stencils, and the other images are some shirts and a skirt that I spray painted on. All of these have been washed, and I have other shirts I've had for years so I know the spray paint doesn't fade. Ok maybe it fades a little, but over the course of a couple years what isn't going to fade? And just to clarify, all the non-dino/kitty imagery is screen sprinted not sprayed (and if you ARE going for the clean, crisp look, I recommend that over stenciling for t-shirts anyway). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() EDIT: If you want to see more head to my flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/partybot/
