I watched all of the Beyond Good and Evil LP.

http://fromearth.net/LetsPlay/BGnE/

Beyond Good and Evil is a game that is overrated but is fun to watch. Chip and his friend have a lot of interesting conversations, even the technical problems are entertaining to watch. When I first saw the names of the videos, for example "What is the meaning of K-Bups", I thought that must be the name of a chapter in the game, but it is not, it's one of the many interesting things the narrators talk about.

Recommending Phantasy Star 4. This guy stands a good chance at actually finishing it, and with 4 failed threads, that's an achievement. The updates are enjoyable, and there's more than enough nerdity going on in the background for those that want to try and attempt to understand the overarcing story.

Also I'd like to recommend Malorie's 7th Guest thread. It's barely started, and if the quality changes I'll be sure to update all of you about it the very second it happens, but it's a great beginning to a great game. Using subtitles over audio commentary is a great choice for keeping the overall mood of the game intact.

I'm sure there were many people who were following it for the humor value of slightly-censored, terribly-written porn scenes, but there were enough who were very, well, "interested" in what was happening for action to be taken.

I am here to recommend PauseAction's Ace Combat 5 LP. I'll be honest, it's not revolutionary. But it's a really solid LP, and I think that's just fine. PauseAction is really good, his subs are solid, and the game is far cooler than I expected. I watch LPs to experience neat games that I would have never seen otherwise; if you're that way too, I would recommend it. My only complaint is that updating can be a touch sporadic, but more people should be watching.

This is one of those "unobtrusive" LPs where Malorie does the boring puzzles for you and lets the audience participate for the better ones. It's a trip down memory lane and it's "classic" in that sense that it reminds me of the good old days of the screenshot LP where we were all curious what the game was going to do next, rather than what funny gimmick the author was going to pull up.

In this case, that is absolutely a good thing and the right way to do it, and I wish there were more threads like it in here.

Vlaphor.

Along the same lines, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath

It's done, but I'm 7 videos in and I like it a lot. Again, Plavski doesn't really "take over" the game, so it's similar.

7th Guest is a lot more like "Here is the 7th Guest, not so much the LPer" - Malorie's there, but she's not as omnipresent. Plavski is, but he doesn't really get in the way, and his commentary is more on the order of explaining why he's playing the way he is, rather than coming up with funny gimmicks and what have you.

I think it was more a comment on how he likes the older style of Let's Play than anything else.

I like a mix of the old and new, which is kinda why, frankly, I do miss the old days when it was more about the game than the player and you didn't have to worry so much about being hysterically funny - your point was just to show off a weird/interesting game.

We tend to get a lot of the newer, "Make funny videos > show off a game" type of LPs. That can be good in its own right, but I think those work out better if they're driven by "I have a funny idea" rather than "This is how a Let's Play is supposed to be."

I wouldn't like to go entirely back, because you miss things like Cybershell's SONIC then. You can read all this and more in my book:

I, for one, would love to see more LPs like I Have No Mouth.... and rear end-kissing alert Darkseed. I think Ripper did a pretty good job of capturing that feel a few months ago, even if it was a VLP.

I'm probably going to get ripped on for this, but I really feel like, while VLPs have drastically increased in quality since the creation of this forum, SSLPs have actually gotten worse (this is a generalization, of course there have been some really good SSLPs and some really bad VLPs). But again, that's just my opinion.

As someone who primarily does (and follows) hybrid/screenshot LPs I'd like to know why you say this. I can understand a few notable examples, but all in all, I think screenshot LPs have remained quite steady in quality, or increased slightly. Also I can assume you're not referring to picture quality when you say this, rather commentary quality?

I had typed out a bunch of poo poo nobody wanted to read, but I think I'll sum it up like this.

A VLP is, in my opinion, much easier to do simply because if your commentary sucks or you sound like Steve Urkel or whatever, I'm easily distracted by what's going on in the game and can usually tune the commentator out if I want to. In a SSLP, on the other hand, you're on stage and there's no competition. I'm pretty much relying you on getting the story across. If you suck or aren't funny, it's FAR more noticeable in a SSLP.

It also seems like people feel almost compelled to SSLP every single RPG ever made. Guys, sometimes a game just shouldn't be LPed. If you can't do anything interesting with it, don't LP it. If your LP is basically a screenshot, then a summary of the plot, then another screenshot, then another summary of the plot, the screenshots are basically superfluous and I can get the rest on GameFAQs if I really care. My favorite SSLPs have almost universally either been adventure games, or RPGs where the author really did something unique with the thread (Scorchy's KOTOR2 thread, Nakar's Ultima threads, etc).

I dunno, like I said, this could go back and forth for a long time because everyone enjoys their own thing. I'm not trying to convince anyone that I'm right and they're wrong, but hey, you asked. :v:

I'm not sure I've seen a decline, Proteus, most LPs suck no matter what the format is :v:

To me it's more like VLPs might be less demand on the author's creative half - as you say the game can carry itself more - but the demand for technical perfection around here has gotten stronger and stronger (and that's not all bad, either).
For SSLPs the technical bar of entry is much lower - any idiot can figure out Irfanview - but the creative demands are much harder because the author pretty much makes the thread sink or swim.

Frankly a lot of you guys have great voices for subtitles :colbert:

Anyway you guys should all read the Ace Combat 5 thread since I need more people to be nerds about airplanes :(

After a few of my lovely test posts before when I went with a vlp, I just kinda feel now I like showing off a game more than doing a crazy gimmick.

Though, in the same vein, I do like trying to think up things that can get others involved in it as well, I'm more of a community kinda guy like that even if I am a little bitchy and old sometimes. Gimmicks are fine in their own regard so long as it doesn't get too grating, and it's a bit more appropriate for old classics almost all of us have played.

Yeah but you're Proteus. You don't like anything.

What you don't like about screenshot LPs might be what someone else loves. I admit I find myself having more to complain about with SSLPs than video LPs, but I don't think it's fair to say that all SSLPs that present the game are poo poo while VLPs that do the same thing are fine.

That said, I'm going to recommend a VLP :v:

Which is why I openly said about five times that it was just my opinion and that people were free to disagree. But if what someone else loves about SSLPs is the vast number of them that are no more than "screenshot, plot summary, screenshot, more plot summary, 12 screenshots of a battle, dialogue transcript"..........I don't even know what to say about that. :v:

Also, VLPs don't have to transcribe dialogue, so it forces the LPer to actually come up with something else to talk about. In my opinion (I'll emphasize that part for you), that's a good thing.

Edit: To prove I don't hate everything, however, I will recommend b00n's FEAR thread. Never once did I think that I'd ever recommend a b00n thread but he took every piece of criticism to heart from his Doom 3 and HL2 threads, and he's doing a pretty good job with FEAR. Subtitles help maintain the atmosphere of the game, plus, the video quality on his own hosting is loving amazing.

The commentary explains everything that's going on, the video quality is perfect, and it shows how you can save every Mudokan, which is definitely a lot more impressive than it sounds.

I'm pretty sure that if I played this game, I wouldn't even see half of the game screens... even the first level alone has tons of hidden areas filled with Mudokans next to death traps. It's a great game to watch.

There's really nothing else on LP right now quite like the Rollercoaster Tycoon thread. It's a wonderful romp down roads of nostalgia as we experience the various levels from the point of view of actual businessmen running the parks (in a humorous way, of course). From goblins destroying your merry go rounds to mermen cursing your name, Kem Rixen goes to show that he is not only willing to put forth the effort to bring an entertaining update every week, he is also willing to take the more popular challenges suggested such as building a park largely under and above water. If you've got time on your hands and feel like spending a good bit of your time catching up, it would be worth your while to see how Kem has developed the parks and how he will present that particular park to the viewers. The closest thing to that thread at the moment is the Sim Tower thread (which seems to have disappeared), so why not give RCT a go?

If I can go back to summer of '07 and suggest that people watch LordMune's American McGee's Alice thread. I do wish the videos had been subtitled like he did with Fahrenheit, and there are a couple technical problems. However, the commentary doesn't detract too much from the LP and the game itself is a genuinely grim take on Carrol's universe.

The Wikipedia page for the game, if anyone is interested. Apparently they're coming out with a movie based on it, and possibly a remake.
