It's made of Lion Brand wool, the kind that is 'great for felting' and therefore makes me slightly nervous.

Beautiful! It will be fine from daily wear, just make sure she doesn't wash it in the machine or put it in the dryer. Maybe when you give it to her, give her some of that no-rinse wool wash and strict instructions to soak it and then flat dry with no aggitation.
