About how much does it cost to get a full set of goalie gear if someone owns absolutely nothing? I have hockey equipment but I don't think any of it is transferable over to being a goalie. I've been fairly interested in switching over, but it seems like a big investment up front. Is it better to buy new stuff off the bat, or get used stuff to begin until I know whether or not goalie-hood is for me?

Also, sometimes it's hilarious when you goalie-folk explode. We had a game where the opposing team's forward got a slashing call for going at the glove of our goalie after he'd covered the puck. The other team's goalie I guess assumed this made him bullet proof, because he jumped up at me and sic'd his two defensemen on me for poking at a puck I could see between his pads. He was like, 5'5" though so maybe it was just small-man syndrome.

He bitched out anyone for even coming within a foot of his crease, and constantly complained to the ref for calls when nobody was even near him.

Pleads, here's a rough cost I found from another, older thread:

I'd amend that to say that if you're going to spend money on something other than your mask, skates, or jock, put the money into the best chest protector you can.

That's not too bad, then.

I'm definitely going to get a good chest protector. Our goalie has a bruise on his chest from a slapshot he took during a warmup (guy with the hardest shot on the team, of course) and he said after the game that when he was buying equipment, the salesman said "You can get this for $X, or this for $X+10%. The latter is a little thicker." Of course he went with the cheaper one and regrets it now.

I'm assuming it doesn't hurt to take a shot in the pads, but do you feel anything other than the impact if you use your chest, or arms or something? I'm not afraid of taking a stinger now and then, just curious how often a shot hurts.

VVVVVV Considering my previous history with my knees, knee pads will be a given.

It looks like most of you don't wear the hanging neck-guard from your helmet, is that because it's uncomfortable/awkward, or just that you don't think neck-related stuff is enough of a risk to warrant it?

:patriot: I am a huge cheap-skate, but I will remember this when I begin piecing together my goalie kit. I guess that means the $120 helmets at Sport Swap probably won't be good enough.

Wait wait wait, I think I found the flaw in all of this. You guys are all from the States, right? So not only do you have fear of injury, but fear of millions of dollars in medical bills if you take a slapper to the teeth.

I, being a proud socialist Canadian, can leech from the government in the event I take some rubber between the eyes. Masks and helmets be damned! :canada: Now I can spend that extra money on beer, thus increasing my performance.

Fruit is usually a good pick-me-up if you want to avoid Red Bull and the like. It doesn't sit nearly so heavily in your stomach as energy drinks do, but the kick isn't quite as powerful.

Our goalie is a loving superstar. We managed to tie the best team in the division thanks to his heroics and ability to take a flurry of shots like a champ.
code:
SHOTS 1 2 3 OT TOTAL
Storm(us) 5 6 7 3 21
Vikings 12 16 13 3 44
We play a very Flames-esque game--let the goalie handle the defense while we ineffectively try to score on the few shots we manage to take.

It was a huge point considering there are two teams tied for 2nd place with 23 points, the team ahead of us at 21, and us (Storm) at 20 points. Top 4 teams make the playoffs, I think.

Which raises the question: How do you goalies feel when you are on a team where defense is lacking? We regularly hang our goalie out to dry with 1 or 2 unwatched men in front of the net, bad turnovers-leading-to-breakaways, and an inability to clear the zone once the opposition settles in to the box. But he's always happy after a game, always has a beer in the dressing room, etc.

He is far nicer to us than we deserve.

Edit: Just noticed that grid has the names mixed up, nice job HNA!

Deliberate shots at the unprotected part of a guys leg aren't exactly the classiest things ever, either. I would probably run a guy for doing that.

Can someone explain the difference between a goalie cut and a normal skater cut? What's the purpose, since in my experience my normal skate cut has allowed me to push side to side from my knees if necessary, and I can skate backwards just fine.

Well we forwards tend to play better if we can actually have some faith in the stooge in net :colbert:

Is it a goal if you crosscheck the goalie in the head and he crumplesslides back into the net with the puck in his glove?
