![]() ![]() (Changes in the Summer Edition) What is it? Nicovideo.jp or nico douga is basically japanese youtube, but better. The videos uploaded can have higher quality, be longer and it is a bit more anonymous, just like the Japanese like it. The main thing you'll notice when watching videos is this: ![]() Scrolling comments! The comments are unlike youtube directly on a layer on the video (which you can disable) and they have time references, which means that you can do all kinds of cool things such as ASCII-like animations and highlights such as: ![]() Note: You can turn off comments with the "Comment" button under the video (next to the volume slider) What can I find on nicovideo? New anime raw is probably the main reason for many here to check this site out. Other highlights include Vocaloid songs and videos, boys and girls dancing/playing instruments in maid outfits, japanese game playthroughs (Crysis, where the suit has Mechazawas voice), japanese tv- and radio-shows and much, much more. Great! How do I register for this?
How do I navigate? Here is some quick charts I made for easier navigation: ![]() Click here for the full 971x887 image. ![]() Click here for the full 976x655 image. You can add videos to your favorites by clicking this button: ![]() I see a lot of comments like www and ktkr, what does that mean? “wwwww” means “lolololololol” “神” basically means awesome, godlike “ktkr” basically means “omgomg “wktk” basically means “I’ve been waiting for this” (waku teka) ざわざわ。。。means people mumbling, chatting More info: Browse the video rankings Nicopedia How to download & upload videos and audio Block comments & Users Make your favorites public Comment filters for uploaded videos NicoScripting for uploaded videos Clickable comments with counters Vocaloid Memes and trends Artist highlights Vocaloid Artist highlights Niconico tags explained in english NicoNico RPG Changes in SP1 Hildgrim fucked around with this message at Oct 06, 2008 around 19:04 |

The most important part of the Nico community is the vocaloid song production, spearheaded by the wonderful Hatsune Miku:![]() Vocaloids are vocal synthesizer software made by Yamaha, where the user is able to generate songs based on pre-recorded syllables by voice actors. While the first versions came out back in 2004, it was with Vocaloid 2 it really took off, where Yamaha gave the edition a character image and name - Hatsune Miku (初音ミク) - in August 2007. Her cute appearance made the Nico community go nuts, and hundreds of original songs have been created and uploaded on the website, with animated music videos appearing for the more popular songs. The unexpected surge in popularity continued with the second edition featuring twins Kagamine Rin and Ren (鏡音リン・レン). At 3.5 million views, the most famous Hatsune Miku song is "Miku-Miku ni shiteageru". Its popularity was multiplied with the amazingly high quality 3D music video that came out a month later. The same animator also released a music video for "Watashi no Jikan" at Fuyukomi. Other impressive 3D videos include "Melody" and "Hajimete no Oto". Music usually first appears as still imagery with lyrics popping up across the screen, and these are my favourite Vocaloid songs: "Towa ni Tsuzuku Gosenfu "Mujouken Koufuku" "Kumo no Iseki" "Everwhite" "Moon" "Konbini" "Stratosphere" To more easily sort through recent Vocaloid productions, some nice fellow keeps posting a weekly Vocaloid Ranking video that plays clips from the 30 most favourited songs the past 7 days, with the most recent being "Weekly Vocaloid Ranking #17". The Vocaloid family most commonly includes five members: Meiko - elder sister ( "Close My Eyes" ) Kaito - elder brother ( "Bankan Ginyuu" ) Hatsune Miku - middle sister ( "Melt" ) Kagamine Rin & Ren - youngest twin sister and brother ( "Rin Rin Signal" ) The entire family can often be seen dancing together to songs completely unrelated to Vocaloids.

Thanks for the instructions on how to set favorites. Anyway, I've spent way too much time watching play throughs of Mario World hacks. There just way too entertaining. Here's one series. http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm423963 Each video has a link to the next one up at the top. Like this: 2→ sm428233 They get crazier and crazier as they go along. Quite possibly the most addictive song in the world, "Tsurupettan" (some sort of Touhou remake of a kiddy show song?). Lovely Miku music video animated by hand - "White Letter". Another one is "Electric Angel". And "Yuuyami mo Yoake ni kawaru". The fabulous J sings "Metal of Oxenman", the metal remix of the Megaman background music with fanmade lyrics. There was a bunch of these last year, but they've been removed due to copyright issues and other sad things. ![]() Edit: Doh, forgot about "Music Fighter Hatsune Miku"! darkgray fucked around with this message at Feb 03, 2008 around 23:32 |

I've long put off signing up for this service thinking that the whole registration process would be a waste of time for a single video. But lately I've seen people use this instead of youtube more and more often and this thread finaly made me go through with it. And boy, was I in for a treat. I have no idea what I've been missing out on every time I've skipped a Nicovideo link. That Haruhi video along with Onani, the Swedish "contribution" to the Eurovision Song Contest has made my day. I know they're the whole point of Nicovideo but it'd still be interesting if you could make a guide on how to remove comments and maybe even on how we could add comments ourselves. Also, I recall there being some sort of mirror for Nicovideo that didn't require registration, but I might be misstaken.

NicoNico musicians: Tissue-hime (bass) - http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/3751694 - Pretty decent bassist with covers of a few anime songs and "GO MY WAY!" from The iDOLM@STER. Also happens to be a big fan of Nagato Yuki. Sariya-jin (vocals) - http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/1175696 - Really good vocalist. A few mistakes in her recordings (she's an amateur ok), but for the most part she sings better than 98% of the women signed to record labels in Japan. - Recommended video: Cruel Angel's Thesis <- Memory'd from a few months ago to preserve that cool ASCII angel. Shachou (vocals) - http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/1915257 - The best male vocalist on NicoNico, hands down. Also writes his own humorous lyrics. - Recommended videos: Annin-stall (link). Peppers on the Big Bridge (link) "PiaNEET" (piano) http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1768836 - Classical-style arrangement of "Aoi Tori" from The iDOLM@STER. Nakamura Ine (various instruments) - Arranger and performer of fantastic medleys. His vids were featured on a TV special called "The Net Star!" - http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm952154 ; http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1210028 ; http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1841474 "The horse drummer" (drums) - http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/3810743 - Best cover of the Lucky Star OP on drums. Not to be confused with Nakamura Ine. "?" (bass) - Don't know his name, and he only has one video up: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1042065 . It's definitely the best of the dozens of bass covers of the Lucky Star OP, though. That should keep you occupied for a while. Top hits from nico that first came as a simple bad instrumental medley into a full blown composition. Expect many renditions of this. おっくせんまん = A song done to Mega Man 2's Dr. Wily theme. Rodeo Machine = From what I gathered, some song by Halfby where no one gets the lyrics but it sounds like omai gonzo. Ichiro Laser Beam = Exactly what it is. That one video of the meteor hitting the earth = I don't know but lol at the music. 初音みく and other Vocaloid characters = darkgrey pretty much covered this. 東方 = There will be a Touhou version of everything. 「男女」 = a new trend i'm seeing. とかち = tokachi is a mispronunciation of tokashi tsukushite from an idolmaster song by Ami.
