Dude! I can't believe you remembered my post from a year and a half ago hahah. That's a great shot. It could very well be the same color; I did some heavy correction on that photo and lord knows what 28 years of Cali sun UV has done to the original tone. Good to see you were Jeeping hard as a kid; I have similar shots somewhere of me but it was my dad's red early Bronco. I'd love one of those but they're too pricey so XJs it is ;-*

Funny to see that photo of my XJ on it's sagged-out old leafs... looks like this nowadays:

Speaking of RENIX XJs, I've been too busy to do anything fun out in the desert and the drat thing is running great, so in lieu of anything interesting I have been obsessively tracking my street MPG around town... I always leave the odd little RENIX transmission "Power/Comfort" switch in Power and consistently average about 11.5mpg, but I tried running a full tank in Comfort mode the last few weeks and hit a noticeable difference in range. When I finally filled it up I was a hair over 13mpg. This is boring and I might as well try to track ammo usage with a M134 minigun, but it might be interesting to any of you guys who still have AW4s in your MJs (I don't even think there's anyone here with RENIX 4.0 systems in their XJ anymore?). The only difference I noted in driving was that the trans shifted up a lot earlier in the RPM range, but that was about it - felt the same otherwise.

I installed Trucklite lights in the JK today. A world of difference compared to the awful stock lights. Well worth upgrading.

Also received my Poison Spyder BFH stubbie bumper and winch to install in the next couple of weeks. Finally the front end of the Jeep will look a bit smarter.

I did the Hella e-code upgrade on my TJ and noticed a huge difference too, but that's just switching to H4 bulbs from the sealed beams. The trucklites look super cool but I couldn't justify the cost. Would you say it's 100% brighter? How's the spread pattern?

Nah, its a bit of a pointless feature for socal. It might help a bit on my upcoming trip but it was almost double the price.

I dont know the % brightness increase but it is definitely brighter and across a wider spread pattern. The spread pattern is good, hits the floor low & close (sort of how the fogs light up the floor near you), and it covers much much wider horizontal space (and much clearer/brighter) and then cuts off nice and sharp at the top like it should. It does have a couple of butterfly shaped hotspots but they don't bother me.

The highbeams are approximately 400x better than stock too.

Not my photo but this is exactly the difference:

Yeah, it doesn't bother me (yet?).

[e] compared to the spread pattern of the JW Speaker lights, I didn't like the chromatic abberation caused by the prism and the lack of lighting aimed down close to the front of the Jeep and of course the price. The trade off with the Truck lites are the hotspots.

The problem with cheap lights is usually melted wires and/or fire. Oh, and they usually scatter light like poo poo, so you'll be that guy. And they don't meet DOT spec, so if you live in a location where the cops care or there are inspections you might have a problem. Before the fires.

My thoughts exactly. It isn't that hard to slap a head on there, don't even have to pull the engine.

That's not that crazy of a price, I paid almost exactly $2800 for an engine R&R in my TJ  If I had it to do over again I'd take it to my buddies shop and try and do it myself, but my buddy didn't have a shop back then and I'm not about to do an engine swap in a vons parking lot.

This is after a head swap - I guess more damage was done when it overheated originally (previous owner) to the point where a connecting rod snapped. Replacing the head fixed it for quite a while but I think the bottom end was probably shagged already.

To be fair to myself, the YJ probably works. It idles in the driveway at any rate. But I can't afford to get it towed home if it doesn't. Two miles of windy mountain road with no shoulder is a dangerous test environment and I can't ever seem to work out a schedule with my friends who have tow straps. :(

Due to a Thanksgiving miracle, I currently have 3 jeeps here that all run and move under their own power.

The XJ is getting a new front end this weekend (hopefully if the new owner ever shows up to do the work with me). He's already paid me for it so I don't care at this point.

The MJ has developed a lovely new feature where it starts OK and then the engine stalls when I pump the gas. I'm about 70% sure this is a dying fuel pump issue. I have to take the fuel tank out anyhow to fix a leak so It's not horrible timing.

Take some pictures! I bought my first Jeep the Friday after Thanksgiving a few years back; it's awesome.

In other news:

gently caress youuuu, gravity!

I'm done welding up the frame for the Jeep Storage Thing. I threw a piece of wood on it, put my fat self on that, and shook all around. It feels sturdier than I expected.

To do:

- Cut carpet over rear seatbelt bolt
- Remove rear seatbelts
- Measurements
-- Distance from tailgate to the rear seatbelt bolt
-- Diameter of rear seatbelt bolt
- Mounting plate
-- Cut to length
-- Mill hole for rear seatbelt bolt, with an inch or two of play front-to-back
- Test fit
- Attack with grinder probably
- Paint
- Install ball bearing drawer slides
- Draw top and drawer (hopefully this fits on one sheet of plywood)
-- Maybe buy tie downs first, measure, and add pockets in the top
- Get plywood and two more 1/2" steel square tubes
- Cut top and drawer on Shopbot
- Drawer
-- Glue together
-- Add brads for peace of mind
-- Attach slides
-- Line with felt or something?
- Top
-- Seal nicely
-- Line with fabric or something?
-- Attach to frame
-- Add tie downs

So many hack things I've had to fix. Needless to say two heatshrinked butt connectors and we are back in business

The coil perches on the old D30 were frighteningly bad. Like once we got the springs off, I was able to pull them off with a pair of needle nose pliers.

Also I finally mounted my cheap winterforces up on my free rims.

Make sure you get them facing the right way, they're directional tires and if the goober at the tire shop put 3 on one way and 1 on the other way you'll never get it right no matter how many times you curse and/or swap two wheels/tires. I've never screwed this up, but I came real close once when mounting my own tires.

Ive heard mixed reviews about the thrush muffler. But If its better then what you have, a decent price, and what you want, just get it. Most people are gonna laugh because its on a 4.0 but its your 4.0 and if a little bit louder muffler is what you want then do it. But after hearing a few I'm tempted to get one to replace the solid brick of clogged muffler on my wifes jeep.

curious, what donor and year did it come out of? Only ZJs, 84-86 XJ/MJs, and WJs got CV pinion yokes as far as I know.

It came out of an xj, apparently. I got very little info on it.

Actually, I'd forgotten to check its gearing. It's not hooked up to a front driveshaft yet, though so we should be okay for now.

edit: I'm not actually sure that the CV yoke was there from the donor or was slapped on by the PO after cannibalizing the U-joint yoke.

I have a dynomax super turbo in the jeep now but it's had too many collisions with rocks and drive shafts, so its sounding a little leaky. I don't want LOUD, but I could handle a little louder

Don't know but apparently I'm loving terrible these days at identifying fluids :downs: Despite the fact that the upper radiator hose was bone dry, it looks like the clamp was loose again already. Cleaned it all off thoroughly, tightened the clamp down, and now that power steering hose is dry.

I've had it with these lovely parts-store upper hoses, they're just a bit too short and the clamps I've got are poo poo. I suppose I could go with the OEM spring clamps, but does anyone have a particular brand / style of radiator clamp that just loving works?
