I'll go get some pictures later, but my 1992 Jeep Cherokee is just one new transmission away from being drivable again. I can't wait. I've replaced just about everything else on it too so far, so its pretty much going to be a new car.

Well, my Cherokee lives again! And all it took was a transmission rebuild, new clutch and replacing drat near everything in the engine bay! So anyways, since we're having trim chat, I was wondering if the trim on here could be saved, the paint's in really good shape, but the plastic bits are all faded and torn up. It's not really dented or really cracked or anything, but most of the paint has peeled off, and it's got this rough white-ish stuff built up on it. Can the flares and ends just be sanded down and fixed with a few heavy coats of primer or something? Or would it just be better to get a new set and then paint those? I mean, I will have to get at least one new bumper end since I ripped one off anyways.

As much as I love my Jeep, it seems to hate me. Fix one thing, something else breaks, fix that, another thing. Garragh. Oh you gave me a new transmission? Well, I'ma snap the clutch pedal in two. Weld that back together? I'm gonna start misfiring. Oh, and I just found some large rust patches under the bumper ends... Oh well, still better than car payments I suppose.

Astonishing Wang posted:It's wicked loud Have you had any work done on the lifters/head in the past? I had some loud tick after replacing the head on my Cherokee, and it was caused cause one of the rocker arms wasn't tightened down properly. It might be worth it to inspect that before tearing everything apart.

How do you turn in that thing?

So I have a 92 Cherokee Laredo, and my instrument lights just went out, and apparently so did my running lights. Brake lights still work, headlights, dome lights, turn signals, etc. All work but not the dash/running lights. I'm guessing it's either a fuse or maybe the light switch? Anyone had this problem before?

So I took my '92 in to get an alignment and they pointed out that my control arms need new bushing and to be replaced, and I need a new steering damper. After some looking around online it looks like the bushing can be done with an air hammer for removal and a ball bearing press for insertion. Any done done this job before, or at least can tell me if I'm getting in over my head here? I'd like to stop my car from shaking harder than Miley Cyrus's rear end, but if it can be done for less than $400 that'd be nice.

So my car made a friend in the parking lot tonight. That's uh, something alright.

mod sassinator posted:I'm kind of surprised how similar in dimensions the new cherokee is compared to the old. Yeah, it's actually a pretty decently sized car. I almost like it from the side/rear view, but good god that front. But yeah, if you're going to make a car and call it the Cherokee it should be two boxes welded together, you'd think that'd be a pretty simple concept. I'd kill for a decent RWD drive Jeep styled like the Patriot, and maybe something that didn't suffer such a horrible case of the GM Interiors.

I love mashing the gas down and listening to that 4.0 scream. I got into a bit of a noise contest with a motorcycle the other night at a stoplight. Then he did a burnout and sped away.

Hey, so I've had a new issue crop up with my Cherokee. It's a 92, and when I went to go start it the other day I couldn't turn the key past the accessory mode Try as I might it couldn't be moved. Then I had great difficulty getting it out as well. I tired another key, making sure the wheel wasn't locked, and tapping on it a bit, with no success. Anyone had this issue, or know if it's the locking cylinder thingy? And could it be something else?

FreelanceSocialist posted:I have this issue intermittently on my '92, only it seems to turn all the way, but not crank at all. It's the Neutral Safety Switch on mine. If I jiggle the shifter (I have an auto) a bit, the problem goes away on the next try. Try that and report back the next time it does it. Otherwise, it is probably the little pin thing in the cylinder that is going. I have a manual and the I've been able to start it in gear since forever, so it doesn't seem to have a neutral saftey switch.

So it turns out my problem was the actual ignition switch, which is easily accessible on the base of the steering column. Haven't quite but the car back together yet, but I got it to start at least. Would have been nice to have known that before I pulled the steering wheel off. Anyone have any advice about getting the actuating rod to line up with the new switch? I made sure it was the right one for a tilt column, but I've having trouble getting it in. ExplodingSims fucked around with this message at 07:27 on May 17, 2014 |

God loving dammit the Jeep is testing my patience today. I went to finally fix my turn signals, a quick wheel pull, and tighten up some screws. Well, not so much. I do that, put it all back together, and a buzzer and the horn are stuck on now. Great, go to pull the wheel and the steering wheel puller bolts snap off. Lovely. I'm not dealing with this for a while. Disconnected the horn and pulled the buzzer out. It's me. I'm the terrible PO. I've become everything I hated.

Does anyone happen to know the shaft size/thread count for the steering shaft? I had to pull the steering wheel on my Cherokee, and the puller bolts broke and the puller slipped off and chewed up some threads. Now I can't get the nut that holds the steering wheel on and need to re-cut some threads. And as far as steering repairs go, I'm still mad about this: (Steering Shaft Lock Ring)
