You don't have to love me, but you will respect me.

Well, the last thread fell into the archives, much to my dismay. So here is a new one, for more discussions of everyone’s favorite Jersey residents, Tony Soprano and family. And Family.

So now we can discuss what we loved best about Johnny Cakes’ mustache, why AJ was so awesome, and why Janice is so hot – all over again! And this time we will keep it active. I mean, if the Arrested Development thread still has people just “getting” the joke in the title of the show, we can certainly keep this thread alive.

So let’s discuss Paulie, Silvio, Furio, and Tony himself, along with the controversial coma episodes and that unique finale that left us all thinking the TV was broken. But really...it was just our hearts... *sniff*.

We will begin with a recap of all 86 hours of excellence.

-----

Sopranos Season 1:

”Meadowlands” - Tony and Christopher at a funeral after Chris’ brush with death – his first of many.

Pilot aired Jan. 10, 1999, though filmed in early 1998
Regular season premiered January 17, 1999

The basics:
This season introduced us to Tony Soprano, a man with two lives. In one, he’s a mostly loving father and ok husband, with mundane concerns about his kids’ grades and the condition of his pool. In the other, he’s one of the top ranking members of the New Jersey mafia, a coldblooded killer, and very good at what he does.

The only problem? He seems to have half a conscience. He’s having panic attacks that are causing him to black out. This lands him in the office of Dr. Jennifer Melfi, MD, a therapist. Throw in the characters from both of his lives, and that’s the setup for the whole show.

Major events in Season 1:

-The ducks that took up residence in Tony’s pool fly away, causing intense feelings of loss and dread for Tony.
-Tony puts his mother, Livia, in Green Grove, a “retirement community” that she hates.
-Giacomo "Jackie" Aprile, the boss of NJ, gets cancer and dies.
-Tony and his uncle, Corrado “Junior” Soprano, have a fight for power.
-Tony allows Junior to become the new boss, but all decisions are actually made by Tony.
-Christopher and his friend, Brendan Fillone, steal goods belonging to Junior. Junior retaliates by executing Fillone and mock-executing Christopher.
-Carmela gets close (but not quite too close) to her priest, Father Phil Intintola.
-Livia finds out that Tony is seeing a shrink, and tells Junior.
-Tony finds out that Junior likes to go down on his (Junior’s) girlfriend.
-the guys learn there’s an FBI rat...and it’s either Big Pussy or Jimmy Altieri.
-the rat is exposed as Jimmy, and he is killed by Silvio. But Pussy has gone into hiding.
-Junior and Livia conspire to put a hit out on Tony.
-Tony is almost murdered, but escapes with his life. He learns who put the hit out on him.
-Livia has a convenient stroke, right after Tony learns she tried to kill him.
-Tony goes to the hospital to smother her, but she is being wheeled away, delirious. As she is carried out, she looks at him sharply and smiles.
-Tony tells Melfi she may be in danger, so she leaves town “on the lam”.

Season 2:

”Funhouse” – Some sleepy fish give Tony a valuable piece of advice.

Season premiered January 16, 2000

the basics:
This season saw two important new arrivals:
-Richie Aprile, long-incarcerated brother of former boss Jackie Aprile
-Janice Soprano, long-missing sister of Tony.

That they get together only makes things better for Tony.

Major events in Season 2:
-Pussy returns, telling everyone he was in Puerto Rico recovering from a back injury.
-Chris has two new helpers, Matt and Sean, who are discontented with their low place on the totem pole.
-Janice returns from Seattle to supposedly take care of her mother in the hospital, but Tony suspects she’s there to scam money.
-Pussy is revealed as a rat, although his allegiance to Tony comes and goes, and he’s obviously very guilty about playing both sides.
-Richie Aprile shows up, and immediately attacks Beansie Gaeta, a pizza-store owner, for old debts he never paid. When Beansie complains, he runs over him with his car. A few times.
-Tony and crew travel to Italy, where Tony makes a deal to get a hardcore Italian mafioso, Furio Giunta, added to his team.
-Janice and Richie meet in yoga class and renew a high-school romance.
-Davey Scatino, a family friend (Robert Patrick), gets involved in Tony’s poker game and gets in over his head. His life quickly spirals downhill.
-Sean and Matt decide to try to get ahead by killing Christopher. They wound him badly, but he kills Sean and sends Matt running. Tony and Pussy track down Matt and kill him.
-Janice convinces Richie he should be boss, and he starts plans to take down Tony.
-Before Richie’s plans can come to fruition, he gets in a fight with Janice and punches her. She responds by going into the other room and returning with a pistol, and shoots Richie in the chest.
-Tony helps clean up Janice’s mess, and gets her out of town.
-While sick with food poisoning, Tony has a dream that reveals to him that Pussy is a rat.
-Tony, Silvio, and Paulie take Pussy out on a boat ride, and Pussy never comes back.

Season 3:

“Pine Barrens” – Right now they’re just two assholes lost in the woods.

Season premiered March 4, 2001

the basics:
Again, two new arrivals cause trouble for Tony.
-Ralphie Cifaretto, who has supposedly been around but has never entered into Tony’s focus. He’s a loose cannon, and a complete sociopath.
-Gloria Trillo, Tony’s new mistress. She seems really smart and sexy and cool, but it soon becomes obvious that she’s completely insane as well. And sexy.

Major events in Season 3:
-the FBI plant a listening device in Tony’s basement, in a lamp. Meadow takes the lamp to school.
-Tony’s mother, Livia, dies. Her funeral is a tear-free environment.
-Dr. Melfi is attacked and raped in the parking garage, but restrains herself from asking Tony for help after the rapist is let off on a technicality.
-Bobby Bacala’s dad (Burt Young) comes out of retirement to perform one more hit, but dies on the job of lung cancer.
-Junior reveals he has cancer as well.
-Ralphie finds out his stripper girlfriend, Tracee, is pregnant. Showing typical restraint, he beats her to death by smashing her head against a guard rail.
-Carmela sees a therapist that tells her she’s an accomplice of Tony’s, and needs to leave him. She doesn’t.
-Meadow starts a relationship with Jackie Aprile’s son, Jackie Jr.
-Paulie and Chris end up lost in the woods after a simple money pickup becomes a botched murder. They’re rescued by Tony and Bacala.
-Gloria tries to threaten Tony, he beats her down and makes it clear that his patience with her is done.
-after Jackie Jr. and Meadow break up, he and some friends try to rob a card game run by some of Tony’s guys. It all goes wrong when they kill the dealer and injure Furio.
-in retaliation, Jackie Jr. is shot down by Vito on a trip to the grocery store.

Season 4:

“Whoever Did This” – You’re the only other one who knows about it.

Season premiered September 15, 2002

the basics:
This season focused on two things:
-the relationship between Tony and Ralph,
-and the relationship between Tony and Carmela.
By the end of the year, both were over.

Major events in Season 4:
-Carmela is looking for Tony to provide her and the kids with a financial future if something happens to him, but Tony wants no part of it.
-Adriana gets a new friend, Danielle, who turns out to be an FBI agent. Under pressure, Adriana becomes a rat for the FBI.
-Janice gets involved with Ralphie Cifaretto.
-Bobby Bacala’s wife, Karen, is killed in a car crash. Janice is attracted to him by his honest grief over his wife. She dumps Ralph for Bobby. They eventually marry.
-Carmela is attracted to Furio, and he returns the feeling. Neither of them know what to do.
-Ralph and Johnny Sack both almost get whacked after Ralph makes a crack about Johnny’s wife’s weight. The argument escalates to ridiculous proportions but defuses at the last possible second.
-Ralph buys a horse, Pie-O-My, and Tony loves the animal. He eventually buys a piece of the horse from Ralph.
-Chris’ heroin addiction becomes a big problem, as it undermines how Tony wants him to be the new second in command. The crew has an intervention for Chris and he goes into rehab.
-Tony learns that Gloria Trillo committed suicide after they broke up.
-Tony learns that Irina is dating his friend, Assemblyman Zellman. At first he doesn’t care, but eventually gets furious and goes to his house, whipping him with a belt in front of her.
-Pie-O-My dies in a stable fire. Tony believes Ralph caused the fire to collect insurance, so he gets in a fistfight with Ralph, one that escalates and leaves Ralph dead on the kitchen floor. Chris helps Tony chop up Ralph and dump him downstate.
-Tony quits therapy with Dr. Melfi.
-Furio almost kills Tony, but decides against it and moves back to Italy.
-Tony sleeps with Irina’s one-legged cousin, Svetlana. An enraged Irina calls Carmela and tells her everything.
-Tony and Carmela’s marriage hits the rocks, they get separated after a brutal verbal fight.

Season 5:

”Long Term Parking” – Adriana wants Christopher to join her in a new life.

Premiered March 7, 2004

The basics:
The two issues facing Tony this season were:
-His separation from Carmela, and the ongoing battle between them.
-the release of several big-time mobsters imprisoned in the 1980s, including Feech LaManna, a Richie Aprile-like troublemaker, hardass prick Phil Leotardo, and Tony Blundetto (Buscemi), Tony Soprano’s cousin.

Major events in season 5:
-Tony, no longer in therapy, asks Melfi out on a date, but she repeatedly says no. He eventually returns to therapy.
-Tony Blundetto tells Tony that he wants to go straight, no more mafia.
-Carmine Lupertazzi, boss of a NY family, dies. A power struggle between his son, Little Carmine, and Johnny Sack ensues.
-Tony gets Feech LaManna re-arrested after Feech starts seeming like the new Richie Aprile.
-Junior shows signs of dementia, caused by “a series of mini-strokes”.
-Chris believes that Tony is sleeping with Adriana (he isn’t), and tries to kill him. Chris barely escapes with his life.
-Carmela has her first affair, with AJ’s guidance counselor. He dumps her, claiming that she is manipulative and greedy (she is).
-Tony Blundetto falls back into the mafia life after he can’t handle working with Korean Mr. Kim, and beats him with a 2x4.
-Tony and Carmela hook up at a family party, but after Tony doesn’t call, Carmela decides to file for divorce.
-Meadow gets engaged to her live-in boyfriend, Finn DeTrolio.
-Finn accidentally learns that Vito Spatafore is gay after he catches him giving a BJ to a security guard. Vito threatens him, but can’t do much because of Finn’s proximity to Tony.
-Tony’s new mistress, Valentina, catches on fire while cooking breakfast. Tony breaks up with her as she recuperates in the burn ward.
-In the war between Little Carmine and Johnny, Tony Blundetto’s friend Angelo is killed. An enraged Tony Blundetto goes after Phil Leotardo, injuring him and killing his brother Billy.
-Adriana gets an ultimatum from the FBI, and tries to convince Chris to join her in witness protection. Within a few hours Adriana is buried in an unmarked grave in the woods, shot twice by Silvio.
-Johnny wants Tony Blundetto’s head, but Tony refuses, knowing he’ll be tortured. After a painful decision, Tony kills his cousin himself, with a shotgun blast to the head.
-Johnny and Tony work out their problems, just before Johnny is arrested by the FBI.
-Tony and Carmela get back together, with the provision that Tony gives Carmela 650K to invest in real estate.

Season 6 Part 1:

”Mayham” – Silvio just can’t cut it as the main man.

Premiered March 12, 2006

The basics:
Season 6 Part 1 had two major plot points:
-Tony’s shooting, near-death experience and the ramifications of the whole event
-Vito’s homosexuality becoming a public issue, and the ramifications of that event.
And it had one major overarching theme:
-You can’t get out. Or, rather, these guys won’t get out.

Major plot points this season:
-Tony is shot in the stomach by Uncle Junior in a fit of dementia. He calls 911 just in time, and spends a long time in a coma. While in the coma, he dreams that he is on a business trip, but loses his briefcase and ends up with the briefcase of Kevin Finnerty, a legitimate businessman who looks similar. Over time, he begins to think that he is Kevin Finnerty, and realizes that in order to leave this hotel he has to travel to the bright beacon he can see on the horizon. When he gets there, he finds a big house having a party, and the doorman is Tony Blundetto. Tony B wants “Kevin” to leave his briefcase behind, but when he refuses, Tony B seems angry. “Kevin” hears a young Meadow calling to him from the trees (“Daddy, come home”), and so he doesn’t enter the house. But before he can make a strong decision to go or stay, he is pulled from the dream back into real life, where Carmela and Meadow are waiting for him as he wakes from the coma.
-While Tony is out cold, Vito starts making noise about usurping Tony’s place. Silvio also tries to rise to the challenge of being boss, but stress-induced asthma puts him in the hospital too. We see that without Tony, there is no new leader to take his place. And that Vito is a dick.
-Johnny Sack is let out of prison to see his daughter’s wedding, but when he cries at being brought back in, he loses the respect of his crew, especially Phil Leotardo.
-After the time in the hospital, Tony has to re-assert his strength within the crew after everyone starts seeing him as weak. To prove his power, he ferociously beats down the biggest guy on the crew, new driver Perry Annunziata.
-Vito is caught at a gay club by a connected guy, and so Vito has to go into hiding. He flees to New Hampshire, eventually taking up with a mustachioed harley-riding fireman (you know those types) nicknamed “Johnny Cakes”, after the delicious corn flapjacks he is known for. And his hilariously bad taste in men.
-Chris has two things going on: he’s back in the movie business, and he’s back on heroin. His new movie project, co-produced by the Master of Malapropisms, Little Carmine, is described as “The Godfather meets Saw”, and is called “Cleaver”. It’s about a whacked mafioso who returns from the dead to kill his treacherous boss.
-AJ is still a giant douche, racking up huge bar bills trying to impress his friends with his “mafia” money. He then decides he’s going to avenge his dad’s shooting by killing Uncle Junior. This works out as well as you might expect, with him dropping the knife on the floor before he even gets near Junior. Tony bails him out of trouble, but just barely.
-Paulie learns a few things. First, he has prostate cancer. Second, Nucci is not his mother, she’s his aunt. His real mother was a nun who had an affair with a GI. Paulie takes these pieces of news as well as he takes anything. Not very.
-Tony almost takes up with Julianna, a real estate agent that he finds himself attracted to. After they break it off, Chris takes up with her instead, and they do a whole lot of drugs together. Chris decides, probably wisely, not to tell Tony about it. Good thing, or else he might have been whipped with a belt. Also, Chris knocks up his other girlfriend, Kelli, and they decide to get married – but Chris can’t stop thinking of Adrianna.
-Vito can’t stay out of the action and comes back to Jersey. In an event that is shocking only to Vito, Phil Leotardo murders Vito and then has a pool cue rammed up his johnny cake.
-When Phil’s buddy Fat Dom comes to brag about Vito’s murder to Silvio and Carlo, they stab him with a knife. About 50 times. Oops.
-At the end of the season, things look surprisingly good for Tony and crew. AJ has gotten a real job and a decent girlfriend, and Phil has mellowed out after having a heart attack. It’s Christmas and everything seems perfect for Tony Soprano.

Season 6 Part 2:

”Made In America” – Tony and Junior meet for the last time.

Premiered April 8, 2007

The basics:
The themes of Season 6 part 2 continued, but with even a more depressing and final tone. These guys won’t get out of this life, no matter what. And in the end, life goes on no matter what. It doesn’t change much, and neither do people. They may try to change, but they end up right back where they started.

Major plot points this season:
-Tony wants Bobby to become the new 2nd in command, because he feels that Christopher and he have divergent agendas.
-Tony forces Bacala to make his first ever kill, as revenge for Bobby besting him in a fistfight.
-Chris releases his movie, “Cleaver”. Once the similarities are pointed out, Tony is enraged and hurt by the way that the Tony-like Boss is portrayed.
-Johnny Sack dies in prison, of lung cancer.
-Phil is still laying low after his heart attack, so there are 3 contenders for the Boss spot in NY: Doc Santoro, Gerry The Hairdo Torciano, and Little Carmine Lupertazzi.
-Tony wants to back Little Carmine, but Little Carmine wants nothing to do with it.
-Doc Santoro has Gerry Torciano killed in a restaurant.
-Phil spends all his time stewing about his dead brother, and the time he spent in prison. He changes his mind and decides to become the Boss after all. He kills Doc Santoro and takes over.
-Junior has become the leader of a little ring of trouble at the mental facility. However, he is eventually cowed by the staff into taking his medication. His protégé, a crazy Asian kid named Carter, loses all respect for Junior and beats him senseless.
-Tony and Paulie take a trip south to escape some heat caused by the discovery of an old corpse – the body of Tony’s first kill. On the road, Tony sees that Paulie is a blabber mouth, and starts to worry that Paulie might say too much to the wrong person. Tony has an opportunity to kill Paulie on a boat, but he lets it pass. Just barely.
-Vito’s son begins acting out, and Marie Spatafore tries to get Tony or Phil to help her out. But they both just have a brief chat with Vito and let it go. Then Tony, unwilling to pay for them to relocate, has the kid sent to a Maury Povich style bootcamp.
-Tony becomes a bigtime gambler, addicted to winning. But then he starts losing and can’t stop. The death of Hesh’s girlfriend by a stroke seems to snap him out of it.
-AJ’s girlfriend breaks up with him, and he becomes incredibly depressed. Tony, worried about AJ, sends him to hang out with Patsy’s kid. They go to strip clubs, bars, and eventually torture another kid who owes them money. AJ seems to love the thrill of being in power.
-Chris has a hard time staying sober and maintaining his place in the power structure. No one trusts him because he’s never around. Things start spiraling out of control, with Chris throwing Little Paulie out a window and Paulie retaliating by destroying Chris’ property. Chris can’t handle the mocking of the other guys, and goes to JT Dolan, the screenwriter, to complain. JT won’t listen to his problems, so he shoots him dead.
-Tony helps out the FBI by giving them info on the two Arab guys who used to hang out in the club.
-Phil refuses to allow Tony to dump any more asbestos in his dumps without a 25% cut. Tony is pissed. But Phil won’t budge, no matter what.
-On a drive home, Chris and Tony are in a terrible car accident. Tony is only mildly hurt, but Chris is badly injured, coughing blood. Instead of calling 911, Tony suffocates him. He then takes a vacation to Vegas to get away from the grieving families, and while he is in Vegas he bangs Chris’ old goomah.
-AJ’s new gang is involved in the beating of an African kid, and AJ doesn’t handle it well. He spirals down into deep depression again. He finally decides to end it, and tries to drown himself in the swimming pool. He loses his nerve halfway through, and manages to stay afloat until Tony can come home to rescue him.
-AJ is commited to the psych ward, where he can recover.
-Out at dinner with her new boyfriend (Patsy’s other son), Meadow is approached by one of Phil’s guys, Coco, who makes a series of rude and threatening remarks. When Tony hears about it, he goes apeshit and beats Coco senseless, then curbstomps him.
-Tony tries to mend the fences with Phil, but Phil won’t even see him anymore.
-Dr. Melfi is told of a report that therapy only helps validate sociopaths. She doesn’t seem to put much stock in it, until her therapist Eliot announces to all their psychiatrist friends who her patient is. Shamed and angry, she re-reads the study and decides that it’s unwise to treat Tony anymore. She brusquely kicks him out of therapy, forever.
-Phil decides to decapitate the NJ family once and for all. He tells his guys to kill Bobby Bacala, Silvio, and Tony.
-In return for the help with the Arab guys, Tony is warned about the attack by Agent Harris. They decide to strike first, but the hired Italian hitmen botch the job, killing the wrong guy.
-Tony goes into hiding. But before Bobby can get away, he is gunned down by Phil’s guys. Dead. Silvio is in the middle of escaping the Bing when he is attacked by Phil’s guys. Coma. NJ is decimated, and the remaining dregs of the NJ crew hole up in a safe house.
-Tony meets with Phil’s underlings to solve this problem. They decide to make amends with Jersey, but they won’t give up Phil’s location. For that, Tony turns to Agent Harris, who tells him that he’s been seen at a gas station payphone in Long Island. Tony’s guys start scouring the payphones.
-AJ is released from the ward and starts seeing another patient there, a high school girl named Rhiannon. They start making out in his yellow crapmobile, but it catches on fire and they barely escape before it blows up.
-AJ wants to join the army but Tony convinces him to work on a movie set instead.
-Meadow decides to become a lawyer, because of the way her father was “mis-treated” all through her life.
-Tony’s guys finally catch up with Phil, and shoot him in the head as he exits his vehicle. He falls down and the SUV he was in, still in drive, slowly rolls over his head.
-Carlo Gervasi, one of Tony’s captains, flips to be a rat after his son is caught selling drugs. Tony’s lawyer tells him that he has a very good chance of being indicted.
-Tony visits Junior one more time, but Junior can’t remember anything anymore. Tony tells him that Junior and Johnny Boy used to run North Jersey. “We did? That’s nice,” he replies.
-Tony goes to a little diner to meet with Carmela, Meadow, and AJ. Carmela arrives first, as Tony puts Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” on the jukebox. AJ arrives and orders some onion rings. Various unsavory characters lurk around the diner, eyeing Tony. Meadow drives up and has trouble parking her car. Carmela, AJ, and Tony make small talk, in which AJ quotes Tony from Season 1: “Remember the good times”. Meadow finally parks her car, as one dangerous looking man moves towards Tony...and past. He goes into the bathroom. Meadow runs up to the door.
The door opens with a ding, as Tony looks up to see---

Such a loving awesome show, definitely a true classic. Awesome job on the first post, too, it was great reliving all those moments and now I gotta find my drat DVDs so I can watch the whole thing again.

I wish you'd had the animated gif of Phil Leotardo's final moments, though. I love the face the kid makes when the car rolls over Phil's head :v: My most tragic moment was Adriana getting killed. Poor girl :(

But guys - if you go watch the final scene (in all its awesome glory) on YouTube, whatever you do - DON'T READ THE COMMENTS. It's basically five pages of "lol u n0bs tony gets kild its obvius" "lol no u fag he dunt" except with even worse grammar. I think I got brain cancer from reading it :smith:

Wow, great OP, I'd completely forgotten about some of the storylines earlier on. The Sopranos was a fantastic show, my favourite scenes were with Dr Melfi definitely.

What was the consensus on here as to what happened after the finale? I can see both sides of the argument but I'm gonna annoy someone now I'm sure by admitting that I definitely think he died at the end.

Also that duck picture is great, Furio's the perfect character for it.

I've been buying the DVD seasons recently, and couldn't figure out who Ralphie was until recently; is he the police chief from Bad Boys 2 and Lenny's friend from Memento?

Either way it's a brilliant show and I'm only up to Season 3. Are the boxsets from Season 3 onwards all 4-disc formats with the double-sided first disc?

Joe Pantoliano has been in a lot of stuff, and his name should be hard to forget. Check out Bound if you liked him, it's a decent enough movie with lots of screentime from Joe P. (also there's a lesbo scene between Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly)

Also, please...it's Leonard. You know he hates that.

Future of the franchise
Perfect timing for this thread. I just finished the DVDs having never watched the original series.

Since watching the series I've noticed myself pointing with my pinky finger more and saying "Aaaohhhhhh!" a lot.

My favorite scenes not yet mentioned have to be Paulie asking Tony if he wants some "Bajaw Fresh", Paulie taking a lawn mower as "collateral" and when Tony goes to visit Corrado and tells him about "This thing of ours" and Corrado replies "I was involved in that?" That last one choked me up.

My favorite scene was when Tony was in a coma and Paulie was in there talking to him. Later on he's describing what happened to a few people, and say to them "it just started going BULLSHIT!" The way he says "bullshit" always cracks me up.

I love how Paulie had this really tough guy side to him (remember when he kicks in that rower guy's kneecaps), but he also has a really goofy side to him, such as him stealing the portrait of Tony and the horse.

"Double-sided disc" makes me believe you're located outside the USA. Anyways, for people who are planning on getting the season sets, there's a rumor (hinted at by an HBO employee) that around Christmas time this year, HBO will release a Sopranos complete series box set. No word on exclusive material, but you might want to hold off on buying the sets that are out now.

It's out already, at least here in Europe.

Wow, that's a hell of a box. You'd need a whole shelf for that one.

I'm not sure that's the one I'm talking about. At least, I hope it isn't, since I was wishing for something more elaborate than the old box sets housed inside their own slipcase.

Well, like I was saying, if nobody has bought the box sets yet, you might want to hold off until the complete series box is announced; it might be the cheaper way to go.

There is no spin-off film, unless they're going to do it without David Chase and especially James Gandolfini, who refuses to play Tony ever again. And Chase has said about as much in many interviews and the Sopranos book.

Besides, why the gently caress would you want one?

Yeah, I can't see a movie wrapping things up at this point. Plus Chase has explicitly said "no".

Not to mention that they've dismantled all the sets, sold off all the props and both the club that stood in for the Bada Bing and the storefront that stood in for Satriale's have been torn down.

:smith: It's sad to hear that. Not that I wanted a movie, the series reached a good end. But those sets... gone... :smith:

I really wanted to swing up there and buy some props, but it was just too far away. Did anyone get any, or know someone that did?

I had a love/hate relationship with this show in the 2 months I powered through every season. I was frustrated that the story never went anywhere, but it was pretty entertaining while it lasted. The hardest I ever laughed during the show was the Pine Barrens episode, which was amazing. Also, I watched the Tony coma episodes at 4x speed.

What specifically was sold? I would've loved to get a Satriale's Pork sign to hang up or a pole from the Bing. I can't imagine what that would go for.

I believe they sold everything - props, wardrobe, sets, everything. It was not well-advertised, and I imagine a lot of stuff went to a few people.

I don't have archives, but there was a Craigslist link in one of the older Sopranos threads from last summer. They did it in Queens near the Silvercup Studios and it was very low-key so there wouldn't be a sudden mob of thousands of people. I didn't even find out about it until the day before and by then it was too late to try and get out there. It was a lot of furniture from the houses and Nuovo Vesuvio, signs and furniture from Satriale's and the Bing, some clothing, etc. And at one point in the fall, TMZ advertized that Tony's Suburban was up for sale, complete with Gandolfini's signature on the dashboard and the smell of cigar smoke.

And if you're a big enough fan that you would've grabbed some of the props, then reading this is a necessity.

Speaking of books, does anyone have the Sopranos Cookbook? I love cooking italian food and it sounds like it would be fun cooking the same things found on the show, assuming they are real and decent recipes.

I have used a couple of their recipes and they were delicious. A lot of them are too expensive to make practically though. But its worth looking it over at the bookstore at least.

Unbeknownst to either of us, my fiancee had gotten me the Sopranos Family Cookbook for Christmas while I had gotten her the Entertaining with the Sopranos book. I guess you could say we're a little obsessed.

But yeah, Ishmael is pretty spot on about the cookbook, and the entertaining book has a bunch of new recipes and pretty good advice and ideas for throwing parties. If you have the cash to burn and like the recipes, I'd say they're both worth it.

EDIT:

Just make sure it's the book I linked to and not the one with the all-red cover that was released around the same time that season 6.1 aired. The Complete version is a lot more in-depth and includes the cast talking about their characters in their own words, an interview with David Chase about the final episode and details the making of an episode from the inception of the season's storyline by Chase to the editing and selecting the music for every scene.

I am letting a friend borrow all the seasons at the moment, he has never seen any. It's really cool to see all the stuff happening through his eyes. He is totally hooked on the show, and he is coming up on Pine Barrens, which I know will blow him away.

(and then provide years of torment as to the fate of the Russian, hehehe)

I think "Pine Barrens" seperates those who get the show from those who don't. Anyone still asking about the Russian by the fourth or fifth season are usually of the latter.

I wasn't still asking because I didn't care, but what did happen to the Russian? And what is there to get about the show?

You're about to hear Corky (and others) tell you that if you care about the Russian storyline, you don't "get" that the Sopranos isn't about story, it's about real life.

I tend to think it was a sloppily handled story, and once everyone started asking about it, Chase said "gently caress it", and decided to deliberately not finish the story.

I predict that I will soon be told that this view makes me a bad Sopranos fan.

"I would have won the race but for that."
My resolution for the Russian is that while he was able to steal and drive off in Paulie's car he eventually passed out from blood loss and crashed, most likely somewhere well off the road that might not be found for a while. Most likely Paulie's car wasn't registered under his name, the Russian didn't have ID so he wound up a dead John Doe and no one in the Jersey or Russian mob ever found out.

It works well enough for me, and fits in with how realistically the show dealt with seemingly big events that diminish in importance over time, like Meadow's split with Finn.
