THIS THREAD IS NOW DEFUNCT, NO MORE UPDATES TO THE OP, SEE YOU IN THE TOUCH PRO THREAD!

Welcome to the 3rd iteration of HTC Titan/Mogul/PC6800 threads! I'm not going to bother with a bunch of the marketing info or "how to get a SERO plan" info, since all of that info is available in the previous thread, HTC Titan v2.0: Slurping down cheap American 3G 'til we run outta RAM! Feel free to ask any questions in this thread, however. Please feel free to post stuff that you want changed or added to the OP and I will make it happen, this is a work in progress. The software list obviously still needs some work to be updated.

Big thanks to all the SA Titan owners, especially Otacon, CoolBlue, DanAdamKOF, flyboi, kalibar, 900ftjesus, scarymonkey, and BitBucket. Also thanks to xda-developers and PPCGeeks which you should have bookmarked if you want to get the most out of your phone.

BASIC INFOES

HTC Titan is the current king of CDMA smartphones, though it looks a bit modest when compared to several of its GSM competitors. After all, its release falls between two GSM iterations in HTC's flagship line of "Touchscreen Bricks With Slideout Keyboards That Make Calls" devices -- Hermes and Kaiser. Titan's resemblance is closer to its predecessor than to its successor, but that's not really a bad thing. It's largely the same device as HTC Hermes, but with a few tweaks under and outside the hood. Most importantly, it's available for use on the feature-packed yet inexplicably cheap SERO plan offered by Sprint.

The Titan is AKA:

-- Sprint: Mogul by HTC
-- Qwest: Mogul by HTC
-- Alltel: HTC PPC6800
-- Telus: HTC P4000
-- Bell: HTC 6800
-- Verizon: XV6800

FOR MORE INFO, INCLUDING SPECIFICATIONS, PLEASE SEE Titan Thread v2.0!

If you want unlimited data and SMS on the cheap, please get your Titan on the Sprint SERO Plan, which is addressed fully in the SERO thread.

SOFTWARES

IMPORTANT FIRST-TIME INSTRUCTIONS!
Sprint tries really hard to maximize the amount of rear end your Titan/Mogul can blow the very first time you turn it on by having it pre-load a bunch of shitware. When you turn your device on for the first time, it'll have you calibrate your screen, do language/date things, and then will begin visually loading WinMo -- eventually, a tiny dialog box informs you that custom software will begin installing in 3 seconds - be quick and reset with the stylus again. It'll skip the Sprint stuff entirely, which is what you want. You'll save 5-6MB of RAM at bootup by not installing this poo poo.

FILE EMPORIUM
Otacon manages a kickass uploader/downloader for your software gettin' needs, which is easily accessible with your phone and the info for that is HERE.

MUST-HAVE FREEWARE APPLICATIONS
  • Total Commander (Direct Link to CAB): Let's face it, Microsoft can't do much right when it comes to smartphone operating systems, and WinMo's built-in file manager is no exception. Total Commander is a fabulous replacement and it's completely free (homepage). Make sure you get the CAB I linked, as it's the newest/best version of the software. Total Commander has a built-in registry editor, which eliminates the need for an outside program to handle poking around in the device's registry. This program is the first thing many people load after a hard reset. If for some reason you dislike Total Commander or have another filemanager you prefer, PHM Registry Editor is a good, functional freeware registry editor.

  • HTC Task Manager v2.0 (formerly HTC X-Button): Super popular, pretty straightforward. It's visible in the top-right corner of your screen when you're on the Today screen, and it lets you quickly and efficiently manage which programs are in memory. Most importantly, you can use it to force programs to actually quit (instead of minimizing) when you push the X button on them. Some fancy-dos will tell you to use pBar instead, but I don't see what the fuss is about. HTC Task Manager works for me.

  • Google Maps and Live Search for Mobile: Really a no-brainer, these apps give you directions to Virtually Anyhwere and show draggable, zoomable, tappable maps. Either pick your favorite or pick both, but for goodness sake, don't carry a data phone without at least one of these.

  • TCPMP (The Core Pocket Media Player) v0.72RC1: Great popular little video player for your Titan. Bring those hamfisting anime episodes with you on the run, and impress your friends with your "superior goku eyesight" by reciting the words that you've so obviously memorized even when the subtitles are too small to read. Get the FlashVideoBundle to play regular YouTube and other videos.

  • Nilisco Flashlight 2.0: Very simple but incredibly useful. Turns your Titan's LED flash on or off without opening up the camera application for use as a makeshift flashlight. Running it once turns the flashlight on, and running it again turns it off. Map this to a hardware key for easy access.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FREEWARE APPLICATIONS
  • PocketCM: Honestly, this program is really a must-have once you embrace it, but on the off-chance there are folks who don't agree with me, I'm keeping it here so as not to ruffle any feathers. PocketCM is a finger-friendly contact manager and an SMS threader (think iPhone-like usability features) all in one. The first time I installed PocketCM I ended up nuking it within a few hours because it takes a good 5-8 seconds to start up. "I don't have 5-8 loving seconds!" I thought, "I have important Titan megaposts to write!" PocketCM is really designed to always be in your Mogul's memory -- at which point, of course, it snaps open instantly when you call it up. The best way to keep it from closing is to set an exclusion for it in HTC Task Manager, which will keep you from accidentally closing it when you're closing extraneous RAM occupants out. Provided that it's running, PocketCM will pop to attention whenever you receive a new SMS (along with WinMo's standard SMS notification bubble, unless you've disabled said notification). Simply tap outside of the bubble, tap the message itself, tap "mark as read", and bust out your QWERTY keyboard to reply threaded-style. Very slick, very much the way to go. It does suck to take a RAM hit to keep PocketCM resident when memory is at such a premium on the Titan, but given that you're getting two functions for the price of one, it's not as bad as it sounds.

  • HTC Home and HHC (HTC Home Customizer) v1.0 BETA 5: This is the famous/infamous granddaddy of a homescreen plugin you keep seeing everytime someone posts a Windows Mobile screenshot anywhere. This thing is a real breath of fresh air from stock Windows Mobile, as it gives you basic versions of a lot of features found in more expensive PocketPC software: finger-friendly touchable access to your e-mail/SMS/missed calls/alarms, your 9 favorite contacts, your 9 favorite programs, weather, ringer profiles, and music controls. And hey, a bigass snazzy clock! We love clocks up in here. Boy howdy. HHC (homepage) is a really slick little piece of work put together by xda-dev/PPCGeeks internet pal "emunutz" that lets you quickly and painlessly customize the look and feel of HTC Home. Be sure to install HTC Home first, then HHC (HHC claims it will download and install HTC Home for you if you don't have it, but the latest version of HHC threw an error for me -- best bet is to just load HTC Home first). Anyway, a lot of you will find that while HTC Home is a good starter piece in the world of Today screen customizing, most of its features are pretty light. The weather information is basic and doesn't update automatically, the program shortcuts are ugly/unskinnable/too-few, the music controls work great provided you're really attached to Windows Media or HTC Audio Manager (both are lacking). Ultimately, I'm finding that I still keep HTC Home around for the features it suits me for (and I'm a finicky bitch!), and I use replacements for the features it doesn't. For some of you, HTC Home is all the customization you'll ever need, and for the rest of you, loading it up and playing around with it will get you hooked on extensively jacking around with your phone. *note: this software is very well known to have a memory leak, and many people are using phoneAlarm as a great replacement.

  • S2U2 (Slide2Unlock2): Unlock your phone by swiping your finger across the screen. Sure, it takes its appearance from the iPhone, but is that really so bad? We could all use a little style in our world.

  • Picsel Browser: Probably one of the better fighting chances WinMo had at putting out a good web browser. It's got a unique zooming method and does a great job at rendering a lot of webpages, provided they're not crazy complicated. Personally, I've gone back to Opera Mobile, but I keep Picsel installed to mess around with from time to time. Make sure to note that it won't dial #777 and connect your EV-DO for you when you run it, so you'll have to either do something on your homescreen that triggers a data connection, or use the tweak listed down below to make a MortScript that forces a connection.

  • Opera Mini: Another great web browser with cool iPhone-like zooming tricks, but it requires Java to run (it's designed to run on all dumbphones). Check out scarymonkey's Magnum Opus guide in the Answers and Tricks section below to kick Opera Mini's rear end.

  • Orb: Outstanding little diddy that turns your (always-on) home PC into a media streaming server for your Titan. No extra software required for your handheld, and it'll stream music and video right into your brain anywhere you've got an EV-DO signal. Who needs an 80GB iPod when you can listen to 800GB of music on your smartphone?

  • OpMon: Kickass little utility from the guy who wrote HHC that lets you change the operator name on your homescreen to whatever you like (and keep it that way). Why should your phone say "Sprint PCS" when it could be saying "BALLS"?

  • Personalizer: This is similar to OpMon but it's newer and seems to work a little better.

  • TouchPal Keyboard by CooTek: Very innovative idea for an onscreen keyboard, and probably the finest we've seen on Windows Mobile. Sprint and HTC should write these guys a giant loving check for the rights to this, because this thing could sell a lot of fuckin' HTC Vogues to QWERTY diehards. Check out a short video of TouchPal in action.

  • Capture Screen Utility: Handy dandy program for taking screenshots of your Titan. Why not grab it now and load up some pictures for the gallery below?

  • PocketPuTTY: Simple, open-source SSH client for Windows Mobile. Remember, if there's one thing that will prove to the world you're not a geek in spite of buying a $500 smartphone, it's remotely accessing your Linux server using said $500 smartphone.

  • ScreenToggle: Simple freeware utility that allows you to turn the screen of the Titan on or off. Note: this is different than using the power button, as the power button puts the device into sleep mode. Map this to a key to power your screen off without stopping music if you have a player running in the background.

  • 4+GB microSDHC Support: Titan doesn't seem to recognize microSDHC cards larger than 4GB out of the box, but they should work with no problem after you install this. A must-have if high capacity storage is on your priority list. *note, the latest ROMs seem to have no problem with 4+GB cards out of the box.

  • Microsoft Office 2007 Mobile: Updated version of MS Office Mobile with OneNote 2007 and .docx/.xlsx/.pptx support. And let's face it, friends -- can you really afford to be without .docx support on your cellphone? I certainly can't! *note: Now this is available as an upgrade from Microsoft.

  • PocketNester: Solid NES emulator for Windows Mobile, solid NES emulator for the Titan.

  • WeatherPanel with PhatPhinger: Easily the nicest Today screen weather plugin I've ever used. This is basically a hacked-up version of the formerly-shareware (now freeware due to original author's MIA status) program Marsware WeatherPanel. The hacked version has been rigged up by "Storyr" over at PPCGeeks to update from a custom server and it works great. Using the incredibly-badass PhatPhinger theme for WeatherPanel, you can manage it entirely with your finger. Unlike that lazybones weather tab in HTC Home, WeatherPanel actually does update every 30 minutes (or on demand if you need it up-to-the-minute). You can scale it to any size you like, from consuming the vast majority of your Today screen to taking up a single line. Runs great inside a panel of Spb Mobile Shell, too. Ridiculously detailed weather statistics, freeware, and it looks great too. Best weather plugin ever.

  • WMWiFiRouter Turn your Windows Mobile device into a mobile WiFi router for other devices to connect to (like laptops or a DS). It was removed from the official site for "legal" reasons of some sort, but the website now says coming soon instead of being blank. If you Google for a while you might manage to find a copy, 0.91 was the latest and greatest before he took the site down.

  • TI-89 Calculator: Yes, you can have the Texas Instruments TI-89 calculator on your phone!

  • DXM Music ID: this awesome software allows you to hold you phone up to some music and it will listen for 5 seconds, then consult an online database to determine what the song is. It works frighteningly well!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS
  • Opera Mobile v8.65: Many people regard this as THE web browser for WinMo devices.

  • IM+: AOL UK offers up a free AIM client for WindowsCE/WinMo, but man is it ever stale -- you certainly get what you pay for. The good news is that IM+ is everything you would expect a kickass mobile IM client to be: multi-protocol (AIM, MSN, Google Talk, Jabber, ICQ, Yahoo), attractive, chat logging; hell, it's even got tabbed IM windows and a Today screen plugin that keeps you informed. This is the messaging client you want.

  • Conduits Pocket Player: Pretty easily the best MP3 player on Windows Mobile -- though that's not hard, given how bad Windows Media and HTC Audio Manager suck. It's attractive, it's easy to find what you're looking for, the playlist view is super convenient, it offers exceptional audio quality, it delivers exceptional audio quality, and it crossfades! Also supports major nerdgasm file formats Ogg Vorbis and FLAC, and it does ReplayGain too, so you don't get blasted out by music recorded at different volume levels. The only "issue" with Pocket Player is a lack of support for HTC Home's music control tab, especially since Pocket Player's home plugin isn't the most attractive thing we've seen (a good workaround for this is to simply have Pocket Player's icon on your Today screen and open it for fast access to the controls). It's actively developed, however, so I have faith that it'll only get better. First-rate product.

  • Spb Mobile Shell: Another all-in-one phone suite type thing, people are really like the newer version.

  • Spb Backup: Another backup program, but honestly PIM Backup is free and doesn't even require being installed, like this does.

  • Spb Pocket Plus: Great way to put tabs on your today screen, and you can easily run today screen plugins in individual tabs.

  • UltimateLaunch: Similar to SPB Pocket Plus, but different. They do have an English version despite the website being in German.

  • SBSH iLauncher: Clean, attractive way to add capacity meters and program shortcuts to your Today screen among other features that you may already have via freeware (like the task manager).

  • PocketPC Software by SBSH: Same deal as Spb; I found that I've covered my bases well enough in terms of functionality without using most of SBSH's software, but they're definitely worth looking at.

  • Resco Explorer: Popular (shareware?) file explorer with built-in registry editor. My personal preference is Total Commander, but a ton of people use Resco and really like it (including goon Titan mastermind, scarymonkey ). At the very least, it's worth having a trial copy on hand in case a must-perform tweak comes out that only seems to work in Resco.

  • Resco Radio: Kickass internet radio client, perfect for listening to shoutcast stations and GBS-FM on the go.

  • Omege One 1-Calc: Very nice (and practical!) calculator application, a real step up visually from the built-in sack of ugly you get with Windows Mobile.

  • AEBPlus: AEBPlus lets you re-map all of the Titan's external hardware keys to applications/functions, and allows you to set different functions for single-tapping, double-tapping, and triple-tapping a button. Most importantly, it lets you re-map that poo poo-worthless "OK" button on the left side of the Titan. Honestly, who needs two separate OK buttons on the face of the device? Good things to map to buttons include Nilisco Flashlight, screen rotation (for easy access to landscape with the keyboard closed in a web browser), Bluetooth on/off, and screen toggle on/off. To my knowledge, you can't re-map the WiFi on/off switch to anything.

  • phoneAlarm: Utility with Today screen plugin that lets you manipulate a bunch of behaviors on your phone. Defines profiles for your phone and allows you to pick times of the day for the phone to switch to Silent, Vibrate, Normal, etc. Great alternative to HTC Home. Grab this awesome touch skin for it.

  • SlingPlayer Mobile: SlingPlayer lets you stream a home cable/satellite/TiVo/whatever signal over your home broadband connection and a Slingbox right to your Titan. Sprint EV-DO is fast enough to do the job, and it's a really great way to show off your free 3G to friends (I'd like to see your EDGE phone do this, bitch!). It's unfortunate that the WinMo client costs $30 when the PC/Mac SlingPlayer clients are free, and you already had to buy the Slingbox, but that seems to be par for the course. Still, TV in your pocket is crazy awesome.

  • Touch Commander: TouchFLO-like interface for your phone.

  • MorphGear: GameBoy, NES, SNES, SEGA Master System, SEGA GameGear, SEGA Genesis, and TurboGrafx-16 emulator for your PPC.

OTHER NOTABLE FREEWARE APPLICATIONS

  • YouTubePlay: Handy program for watching YouTube videos.

  • Enable PictureMail/MMS on Titan: In their infinite dickheadedness wisdom, Sprint jacked PictureMail out of the Titan, despite the fact that even free phones can send MMS with no problem. This should put it back for you. *note: this is broken right now on the Titan*

  • nueMMS: A nice workaround for MMS not working, that allows you to easily send MMS via email.

  • sMMS: Another MMS workaround, some people prefer it to nueMMS.

  • gCalc: Simple yet tasteful calculator replacement. Not full-featured like 1-Calc, but it's also free!

  • SprintTV: Watch TV on your phone, with a few decent free channels. *note: for unknown reasons, this has periods of time when it works and when it doesn't, seemingly controlled by Sprint.

  • HTC Audio Manager v1.2.919.713: Free audio player by HTC that you can control with the music buttons in HTC Home. Lighter memory footprint that Windows Media, if you hit the power button it will blank the screen and keep playing.

  • nueLED: A massive improvement on LED Killer, this software has no memory leak and can configure the LED's in many different ways.

  • nueMinutes: A neat tool that grabs your minutes and data usage from your phone provider. Helps you keep track of your usage.

  • Big Button Dialer (Final, Sprint Mogul only): Functional and now issue-free replacements for the Windows Mobile dialer and Comm Manager themes, only for the Mogul. Provides larger, finger-friendly buttons on the touchscreen.

  • MyMobiler: Program for the PC that allows you to view and control your Titan using a keyboard and mouse on the computer, take screenshots, and copy/paste text between the two.

  • pRSSReader: Free RSS reader for Windows Mobile, great way to keep up with your feeds.

  • PeraStats v1.6: Lightweight and simple, effective way to display battery, RAM, and other device statistics on your Today screen.

  • NS Contact Backup: Freeware utility for backing up your contacts.

  • PIM Backup: Freeware utility for backing up all sorts of stuff.

  • TodayAgenda: Plugin for the Today screen that shows your calendar and to-do list in a much more thoroughly detailed manner.

  • Calendar+: Plugin for the Today screen that shows an expanded view of Calendar entries.

  • Tasks Plus: Plugin for the Today screen that shows an expanded view of to-do tasks.

  • cLaunch: Great, simple today plugin that lets you add program shorcuts to the Today screen, resize them, adjust spacing, and more.

  • WM5torage: Useful little utility that will export the flash memory card inside your phone as a usual USB Mass Storage device -- effectively turning your smartphone into a flash reader. *NOTE* this is reported to not work.

  • Palringo and Octro: Free multi-protocol IM clients that should absolutely be given a whirl before trying the archaic AOL UK client. Great alternatives to IM+ if you find that it doesn't fit your tastes or that you simply don't want to pay for it. Palringo features VoiceIM (meaning you can hold down a button, speak, and let go and the other person hears a WAV of you speaking). Octro is lightweight and tabbed.

  • AIM for WindowsCE: Old-school AIM client put out by AOL UK. Doesn't dial #777 to make your data connection for you, sloppy/ugly/boring interface, no advanced features like logging or tabbed windows. Given enough pushing, it does eventually connect to AIM, which is a plus. Still offered for free, but it's hardly a bargain...

  • Palm ThreadedSMS for Titan by Codyppc: Client that was hacked out of a Windows Mobile-powered Treo and shoehorned to work on the Titan. It actually looks quite nice and completely takes over the messaging function of WinMo, but it will play with your heart. A lot of folks using it seem to end up reporting mysterious errors/issues, especially ones that aren't obvious right off the bat. My own experiences with ThreadedSMS have not been favorable. I highly recommend trying out the PocketCM solution for threading your text messages, but feel free to give this one a shot if you're feeling lucky -- some users seem to report no problems with it.

  • Slide2View: From the author of S2U2, this is a replacement for the stock photoviewer with touchfloesque operability.

  • Slide2Play: Latest project from the author of S2U2 which is a music player. Still under heavy development.

  • PocketDict: English dictionary for your phone.

  • True Type Pocket Translator: Translation dictionary with English, Dutch, Spanish, German, Portuguese, French, Italian, and Swedish language packs.

  • FreeUP RAM: Use this periodically to free up some RAM on your phone.

FREE GAMES AND EMULATORS

Sure, WM devices kind of suck for gaming due to the buttons and arrangement of buttons, but some stuff works really well and can be nice to have on the bus, train, or subway. Buying a DS or PSP might be a bit more satisfying in the long run, but gently caress it, you can play Mail Order Monsters on your phone!

ROM Updates

*NOTE: GPS and Rev. A is now supported in the official ROM!*

When you update the ROM on your phone, you are flashing the entire operating system and all software/data stored on your phone (not SD card) will be lost!

Make sure to record the settings for your phone before you flash a new ROM. Some ROMs will wipe your settings and your voice, data, or both might be hosed up as a result. Please see the post in the FAQ section that explains how to get your settings.

There are two basic types of ROM updates: Official and Unofficial.

Official ROMs

Official updates are very easy, usually you just Activesync your phone, then run the .exe and wham you will have a new ROM installed.

Unofficial ROMs

The homes of custom ROMs for the Titan are at XDA and PPCGeeks. Here you can find all of the custom ROMs. However, some of the tools necessary to use them are found at PPCGeeks.

Unofficial updates are a little trickier, because the phone must first be 'unlocked' to accept them. This is accomplished with software called Hard-SPL. *note* If you need to return your phone to factory condition, you need to run the Re-Locker.

Once you have successfully unlocked your phone, you can flash the Unofficial ROM according to it's instructions.

Many users are using the DCD series of custom ROMs, which incorporate WM6.1 along with the GPS and EV-DO Rev A of the Official ROM. The DCD ROMs are updated at XDA. Also popular are the No2Chem series called nueROM.

The latest custom ROMs are supporting something called User Customization (UC for short). What this basically does is replace the extROM script (after a hard-reset, the thing that goes Customizing in 3 seconds...) with a script that you create which allows you to install a directory full of CABs, alter registry entries, and copy files around automatically after you hard-reset. There are a few peculiarities to it, though, so check out the XDA thread for the latest info and tools. A tool has just been released to make the UC script, called SDConfig Builder.

The latest cool thing is the Titan Kitchen which is a sort of universal ROM customizer where you can change the splash graphics, set up customization scripts for many settings, and install various software automatically with the ROM.

FAQ

  • Man, my Titan is really hosed up. It's running laggy, I'm missing calls/texts, poo poo's freezing. I need to start over -- how do I hard reset?
To perform a hard reset, hold down both soft keys (the ones with dots on them) and press the reset button with the stylus. It'll give you a blue screen asking if you're sure - hit the I'M SURE key and off you go. This will completely wipe your phone, and it'll be the same as it was the day you took it out of the box. Make sure you've got everything backed up (commercial and free backup utilities are recommended above). To make certain that your phone doesn't get loaded with Sprint garbage after you reset, follow the "first-time instructions" graciously provided by Otacon at the top of Section II.

  • Wait, why doesn't my Sprint Mogul have aGPS yet? Why doesn't it have EV-DO Rev. A? These were promised upgrades! How come the alarm's glitchy, Bluetooth performance still sucks, and the keyboard is hosed in .NET applications? $$$print is loving us again!
Alarm should be fixed with Official ROM 2.17, and GPS and Rev. A are available with the latest Official ROMs.

  • Wow, that really blows rear end. I heard that the Titan has been unlocked; does that mean I can put my AT&T SIM card in it?
No, not even close. For starters, Verizon/Sprint and AT&T/T-Mobile use completely different types of technology, so that would never work even if it was the right type of unlock. Further, the Titan unlock is actually a CID unlock, which controls something else entirely -- the ability to flash a custom ROM of the operating system onto the device. Right now, this doesn't mean a lot. You can flash the Alltel or Telus ROMs if you like. Rumor has it that the Alltel ROM actually performs slightly better than Sprint's ROM, but I wouldn't suggest trying it out unless you're really into tinkering with your device.

There's a really great Titan Flashing for Dummies guide over at PPCGeeks summing up the current state of things if you'd like to learn more.

  • How can I tether my Titan/Mogul to a PC without Sprint finding out and charging me?
Follow these instructions by "atsitalian" to mask your PC traffic as phone traffic. Be careful with excessive data usage -- Sprint can still harass you if they see that you're pushing more data than it would likely be possible to load on a phone over the course of the month.

If you don't want to poke around in your registry, USB Modem and PdaNet offer easy-to-use commercial solutions to accomplish the same purpose.

The new sexy way of tethering is with WMWifiRouter, which turns your phone into a wireless access point.

  • How can I decrease the time it takes for my phone to start ringing?
Using this procedure a user has reported that the time it took for his phone to start ringing was cut in half (~2 seconds).

To do this, you will need your MSL, which only Sprint (or your provider) can provide you. I've found e-mailing customer care, and saying you're a developer who needs the code seems to work.

1.) Open up the phone app and dial ##778# (PST).
2.) You will be asked to enter your MSL, enter it.
3.) You will be brought into the provisioning of your phone.
4.) From the top left, select Modem Settings.
5.) On this page, your Slot Cycle Index (SCI) is how often your phone polls the tower for incoming calls,

This value is 1.28 seconds multiplied by 2^value (i.e 0=1.28 secs, 1=2.56secs) with 0 fastest, 7 slowest. The default is 2, but lowering it to 1 hasn't noticeably affected battery life, and roughly 2.5 second (SCI 1) response time is far more reasonable than roughly 5 seconds (SCI 2). Source: http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-...er-pattern.html

  • I need my Titan's MSL code and I don't want to hassle with Sprint's customer service. Those honkeys is trippin'!
Try out the MSL Code Generator. Copy the folder to the Titan/Mogul, run the .exe and input your ESN (Hex, make sure all the letters are capitalized). It will spit out your MSL. If you need your ESN you can just dial ##786# and hit view.

  • Stupid loving Picsel always throws page errors, what gives? Is it even connecting me to the internet?
It's not connecting you to the internet; Picsel doesn't know to dial #777 by default. The stock solution seems to be to create a Mortscript to dial and open Picsel.

    Go get Mortscript from here:
    http://www.sto-helit.de/index.php?m...on=view&menu=29

    Picsel specific dialer:
Just paste into a picsel.mscr file and run from the Mogul. This assumes you installed to internal memory.
    code:
    connActive = Connected()

    If ( NOT connActive )
       Connect( "The Internet" )
    EndIf

    sleep 5

    Run ( "\Windows\PicselBrowser.exe" )

Generic #777 dialer (paste into a connect.mscr file and run from Mogul):
    code:
    connActive = Connected()

    If ( NOT connActive )
       Connect( "The Internet" )
    EndIf

  • WinMo's web browsers sucK! Pocket IE is an abortion, and the other three are only marginally better. What else is coming?
Tough to say when/if the situation will improve. The boys over at Opera have been touting Opera 9 as the savior for awhile now, but we don't have it yet. Nobody's heard jack poo poo about Microsoft's supposedly-forthcoming Deepfish browser for awhile now. Mozilla recently announced that there's definitely a Mobile Firefox in the works for high-end modern phones (man, who called that poo poo?! ), but so far their efforts (more liek 'miniSLOW' am i rite???) have been less than stellar.

Nothing to challenge Pocket Safari yet, but let's not give up hope!

    Watch for Skyfire and Netfront.

  • When I run the Google Gmail J2ME Java app trough the Mogul's "JAVA" emulator, I get a "your phone doesn't have the appropriate certificate" error.
To fix this you need to:
1.) Download and install this JRE (Java Runtime Environment): Intent Java MIDlet Manager
    2.) Re-download and re-install Gmail.
3.) Run the "Midlet Manager" application in "Programs" instead of the "Java" icon. It should work now.

  • WTF, where the hell is the Remote Desktop (RDP) Client?
What the gently caress indeed. It seems like HTC/Sprint forgot or neglected to include the Remote Desktop Client on the Mogul, which should be a standard program available on all Windows Mobile 6 Professional Devices.

Someone hacked together, and made an install available, for download, of the Windows Mobile 6 version of the Remote Desktop Client, you can get it here (in the first post as an attachment): http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-...top-client.html

This may be of use for Windows Mobile 5 users as well, as it is supposed to install and work on those devices. The Windows Mobile 6 version includes several enhanced features over earlier versions.

  • The sound my keyboard makes when I slide it open is too girly. How do I add my own sounds so it's as annoying as my ring-tone?
Glad you asked! It requires some registry editing, so as usual, mess with this at your own peril. Here are the steps:

1.) Prepare/get two sounds files. One will be used for the sound when your keyboard slides open, and the other closing the keyboard. I'm not sure what sound files formats are acceptable. The ones that I used, which work fine, are 22khz 8bit mono PCM .wav files.
2.) Name the closing sound #_in.wav and the opening sound #_out.wav (where # is any number greater then 2 because 0 1 and 2 are taken up by the default sounds). I am assuming you can add as many as you want, and just keep them in the numerical sequence. You might be able to name the sounds files anything you want also, as long as they have a corresponding entry in the registry, but again I haven't tested that assumption.
3.) Copy the sound files to the \Windows folder on the Mogul (not in a sub folder below Windows!).
4.) Using a registry editor navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\SlidingSound.
5.) Create a new key with value of the next available number (eg. 3)
----A.) In this new key, set the (Default) string value to a friendly name for your sound (eg. Star Trek Communicator)
----B.) Create a new String named in with a value set to name of your sliding in sound file (eg. 3_in.wav).
----C.) Create a new String named out with a value set to name of your sliding out sound file (eg. 3_out.wav).
6.) Close the registry editor, and go to Start->Settings->Personal tab, and tap on the "SlidingSound" icon to pick and test your new sliding sound set.

Here's a link to several slider sounds I put together:
Rapidshare Link to Mogul Sliding Keyboard Sounds

Included are a long and short transformers sound set, and a light saber sound set. The light saber set is courtesy of PDAPhoneHome forums member Wizzums. The long Transformers sound set I made by downloading it off a website, and reversing it in a audio editor for the closing sound. I thought the sound was too long, so I made shortened/sped up version. I also included .reg files you can import, for those too lazy/scared to create the registry entries themselves. Sources:

  • That Windows Live tab really sucks. How do I rid myself of it?
Why, you follow the directions in this hyperlink, friend!

  • So, I noticed I've got unlimited text. What's a good way to get my money's worth with that poo poo?
Have an AIM contact add an account with the same value as your phone number, with a leading plus symbol. So if your phone number is 408-555-100, then the buddy should add the a contact with the value "+1408555100". Now when that person chats with that nickname it sends the chat message to your phone as an SMS! What's doubly neat is that you can reply to SMS and the person will see your reply!

Crank out a few thousand of these babies a week and you'll know you're getting a good deal.

  • Man, I really wanna gently caress with poo poo! How do I change ringtone, vibration, and LED flash characteristics?
You can gently caress with the registry ala these instructions, or just get some software like phoneAlarm or LED Killer.

You're in luck! The flexibility of WinMo (read: open development platform) allows for all manner of black magic, and skullfucking the Mogul into looking almost exactly like an iPhone is one such (questionable) instance of said magic.

  • They totally forgot to put the Escape (ESC) key on my hardware keyboard, AND they forgot it on every software keyboard. Help!
Ah ha, if you open up a software keyboard and hit Ctrl-[ you will send the code for ESC!

  • Help! After I flashed a new ROM on my phone, I can't make phone calls and/or use the internet.
Before you flash new firmware on your phone, you need to record some data. First you need your MDN and MSID. Your MDN is your actual phone number with area code, and the MSID is the phone number that Sprint uses internally to route your poo poo. You need to hit ##MSL# (where MSL is your MSL) and hit edit and then you can see these two things. You then need to get your data settings by hitting ##3282#, edit, then enter your MSL as the password. Write down the info for EVERY field. After you flash, you can go in to these two menus and see if the settings are all correct.

Phone/texts not working is usually a symptom of bad MDN/MSID, while data/internet not working is a symptom of bad DATA (3282) settings.

  • What are all these terms ESN, MSL, MSID, MSN, EPST?
ESN: This is the device's Electronic Serial Number, which is like a unique identifier for your phone. This is usually written on the device somewhere near the battery, and can be used to generate your MSL if you need it.
MSL: The Master Subsidy Lock is a passkey used to restrict access to certain features of your phone. Sprint will give you yours if you ask, but you can generate it yourself with your ESN.
MSN: This is your cellphone number with area code, i.e. 2135551212.
MSID: The Mobile Station ID is a phone number that Sprint uses for internal routing to your phone. It is of the same format as the MSN, but might be completely different.
EPST: Not sure what it stands for, but it seems to be a catch-all term for the data settings on your phone.

  • How can I get threaded SMS on my Mogul/Titan without using some 3rd party crap?
If you want built-in threaded SMS, you need a ROM that has WM6.1 which natively possesses this ability. Now available in the Official ROM.

  • Registry tweaks. I want to tweak the poo poo out of my registry. Where is a list of registry tweaks?!
Please see this thread at XDA.

  • TCPMP is all choppy and poo poo, can I make it not suck?
    Tacocon suggests the following modifications:
Options -> Video -> and select either Raw Framebuffer or GDI - DirectDraw is PAINFULLY choppy when using the FLV converter.
    Normal Buffer Size: 512kb
    Preload @ Underrun: 5%
    Preload for Audio: 128kb
    Advanced settings:
    -A/V Offset: -400
    -Soft-drop: 55
    -Hard-drop: 700

  • When I take photos in landscape, they switch to portrait. Make it stop!
Navigate your registry editor to HKLM/SOFTWARE/HTC/Camera/Image, and change EnableEncodePortrait to 0

  • Where is the best place to put my sounds for ringtones, etc?
/My Documents/My Ringtones = default location for choosing ringtones for callers through the WM Contacts app.
/My Documents/My Sounds = default location for sound effects NOT CHOSEN THROUGH WINDOWS - in other words, a USELESS DIRECTORY.
/Windows/ = default location for all Windows sound effects - such as sliding sounds, alarm sounds, text message sounds, etc etc etc.

  • When I run some software, I get the error "This application requires a newer version of the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework than the version installed on this device". What is up?
You need a newer version of Net CF or Microsoft .NET Compact Framework. Get it here.

  • My keyboard is acting lovely, I am getting multiple letters/characters per keypress. What can I do?
Install this CAB file and soft-reset.

  • My GPS is slow to lock on to my location, is there anything that can speed this up?
People used to used QuickGPS, but it is much better now to install this to your phone, then run Windows/PPST.exe and you will be able to lock on to satellites in under ten seconds, even indoors!

  • Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) stopped working, wtf?
    Run in a cmd prompt:
net localgroup Administrators /add Local Service
    and it should work!

  • When I try to add my gmail email account, it guesses my settings but I want to enter them manually

So is there a way to tether on the downlow with a Touch? That WmMWWMWifi thing wouldn't install despite what crowley said. No big deal if not, I doubt i'd be using it very often.

And if they did notice me tethering would that show up on the "current usage" thing or would they just hit me with the bill?

USB Modem or PDANet allow you to tether without it looking like tethering. As long as you don't do something stupid like torrent for weeks using your phone, they won't see it

You can't use WMWifiRouter because the Touch (sucks and) doesn't have wifi. However, there is undetectable tethering thru USB and Bluetooth.

EDIT: it looks like PDANet is the thing for bluetooth tethering, you can also use it for USB tethering but you can do that without 3rd party software with some registry hacks.

the best way to achieve is to try.

i did a hard reset and decided to not use some programs to see the battery life on it, because i was getting about 10 hours on average with all the applications added before.

currently using only
total command
aim
google earth

i'm at 18 hours on a full charge at 60% battery. pretty decent/heasvy usage on the phone with aim pretty much constantly on.

running the 3.16 gps rom. i'll probably go back to the stock rom and see how it works again.

i think htc home and spb pocket plus leaks and drains alot of battery but not entirely sure. is there a replacement for these?

Any program that is running full-time on your phone will eat both ram and battery - there's no way around that.

You can try Phone Alarm in replacement of HTC Home, and Resco Explorer adds a sort of lovely Today screen thing that can hold visual Shortcuts as well as Battery/Ram/Storage meters... but it doesn't look as good as Pocket+.

I agree- SPB software is the bees knees, but it uses too much RAM for what it does.

Which AIM are you using? (If you're on a Touch, is this the built-in client?) Most AIM software will continuously poll the server for messages, wasting battery and processing time. I think that the Touch AIM client uses text messages instead, which would reduce the load on your PPC. I know for a fact however that anytime I run Palringo, IM+, or Octrotalk, my battery life shoots to poo poo - because the program is continuously sending and receiving data.

Don't listen to him, it doesn't suck. Some people just need an over sized brick like phone that can be used for stuffing trousers.

As for the wi-fi, touches don't have it but it's really not needed. We already have unlimited broadband with the service and if we want to tether, USB and bluetooth work fine. The only use I can think of for wi-fi would be providing my Nintendo DS with an internet connection, and it's been over a year since I've played an online game on that thing. Finally, it's my understanding that wi-fi rapes the battery life.

Now for my own questions. How much traffic can the bluetooth on a touch handle? Could I make a call using BT headset while the phone is also connected to a GPS puck? How about using a headset, using BT GPS, and providing internet for a laptop? I've never used BT for more than one thing at a time so I don't know. I'd like to set up my phone as a GPS for my car and I'm trying to figure out what type of puck I want to get.

Wifi rapes battery like Bluetooth rapes battery.

Also, I've 1) connected to my PC via bluetooth, 2) connected to my ear piece as Hands Free, and 3) connected to my headset as Wireless Stereo. Everything worked, but I kinda wish I had a bluetooth GPS puck to try it out on- LOL just kiddin', I got built-in GPS hahahahaha

I thought the whole purpose behind BT was that it consumed less power. Also good to hear about the BT, it's nice knowing that it'll only cost $30 or $40 to fix the lack of functionality I'd only use once in a while in my car. How much does it cost you to fix that RAM problem that affects every single thing you do on your phone?

another question is how whenever i open the internet explorer, the phone dials #777 to connect. if i dont use it for awhile or if i get a phone call/text message, i suppose the connection is then cut off and will not reconnect automatically. is there any registry/app/hacks to make it reconnect automatically after a phone call or such?

There are two GSM versions of the touch. One has 128 ram, the other does not. However, the processor on the GSM touch is slower, and only has Edge connectivity (and Wifi).

The CDMA version does not have wifi, but it has EVDO. The processor is faster than GSM, but I believe it has the same video driver problem that everyone is complaining about. If you run S2U2 on the Vogue, it's not as smooth as the GSM Touch. I think this is caused by a combination of the touchscreen driver and the video driver.

Yes. Phone data is "tagged" differently at the packet level than tethering data like when you use USB and the built-in Internet sharing app. WMWiFiRouter/USB Modem/PDANet are all essentially hacks that make the data still look like it's your phone browsing the Internet instead of you using your phone as a modem. I think there are also some registry hacks you can do for free but they were a pain when I tried them out.

The stock Internet sharing is a totally valid option but kind of pricey per/KB, and you can add on an unlimited service (through Sprint) for $40/month to use it all you want. Although, if you're going to do that, why not just pay $50/month and get a dedicated laptop card through SERO? But screw all that and either buy PDANet or USB Modem for a one-time fee.
