For the ones interested there is a new version on NAM!

http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_f....php?lotGET=851

Edit: They have created a big installation file, with a lot of add-ons, including RHW, High Speed Rail and stations RHW.

Much obliged.

After playing with the new NAM, it's still very buggy, so better pass it until a more stable release.

Ok, absolutely no modpacks or addons of any kind are working right now. Perhaps it's because I have SC4 on a different computer than what I've usually played on? I'm on a laptop right now and I always used to play on my old desktop. The game runs just fine on my laptop, and I know I've played with some sort of modpack before on my desktop, but I'm unsure if it was the one linked in the OP or not.

I'm not very good when it comes to computer issues, so any help from goons is appreciated. I downloaded the latest modpack using Utorrent. Perhaps that's the issue? It's just frustrating. Thanks in advance for any help.

My plugins directory through the C:user/document/Simcity folder is empty.

Lots and lots of bugs, even in areas where you wouldn't expect bugs. Just consider this to be a beta version (as it should have been in the first place) and hope for some hotfixes on the way soon.*

Try putting the mod files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\plugins

No clue why the user directory isn't working, may have needed to run and save the game once. Anyway just put the files in the above.

Awhile back, I wound up re-installing SC4:RH on an older desktop I've revived just to see what it can handle and holy crap, forget the music making I intended to do with it- Time to fill out an entire region with cities... I asked about the modpack and checking back in on this thread, I'm not getting a good impression about it. Is it buggy as hell so take a pass on it still? The game's alright vanilla but I'd like to have the transit system actually work across regions. Is there an older version of the modpack that's fairly bug-free floating around out there?

I think you're mixing NAM with Punch's old fashioned modpack.

If it is NAM, download the latest version (31) but just install the Traffic Simulator Only. The bugs come from the add-ons.

The old fashioned modpack, is the most recent modpack, the OP's is outdated.

It is for most people. The main difficulty with the pack are the terrain mods, which will only work if you're rendering in hardware mode; if you have trouble, delete that folder and you should be fine.

Sure! I'm using the SimPeg Coastal Development Kits. Theres half a million files in there for a ton of different stuff and no pack with all of them that I know of. Welcome to Sim City 4! (These might be in one of the threads megapacks, but I don't honestly know, I don't use them myself.)

Anyways, here's a little gallery that should provide a decent walkthrough on building up a coastal town with the SimPeg kits.

There's a bunch of other kits available, a lot of them less picky about terrain height.

This is part of my regions biggest city so far, and I'm using the Marrast Embankment Set on the main coast while the industrial and port area is using the SimPEG CDK sets.

This is really, really nice.

Diagonal buildings are ploppable only, normally found in the landmarks menu after you install them. They usually consist of a 1x1 or some other small-sized lot that has the building overhang the lot so it lines up with the diagonal roads. They're fun if you're into realism and making things look nice and want to do something like recreate an old-fashioned European city; if you're into more casual playing and don't care about that stuff you can give them a pass.

Watching the shitstorm over SC5 has reminded me that SimCity 4 exists. Aside from the old-fashioned pack and NAM, what are some good mods and BATs for the game, preferably ones with few or no dependencies? What are some good maps? Why do things look like brightly-colored poo poo when I try to render a map with that SC4 terraformer program half the maps out there require you use to set them up properly?

benzine

It depends what kind of maps you prefer, you could try with Eaton, one of the most popular maps: http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/5315-eaton/
And modify it to your preference, recently they upload this gigantic maps, and I rather have a medium one.

Brightly-colored poo poo is the way of the SC4 Terraformer of rendering the map, just open it save it, and it will look like a regular one.

Edit: And mods you could try the SPAM, it improves the agricultural part of the game.
What I do is just try to find new buildings I like, or changing the skins of the stuff.

Here's the latest goon-made pack. I stopped making a new OP because of work stuff (and the way the thread was moving I got a little daunted by all the tech stuff needed to get this game rolling,) but it looks like we really need one. I'll see what I can bang out tonight.

Maps look like poo poo after you import them from terraformer because terraformer doesn't do the region previews. All you've gotta do is open the tiles, save, and exit them, and it should look nice. A community person named Drunkapple made a utility that will do this for you pretty recently, it's either on Simtropolis or the LEX.

As far as maps go, I've been playing on the Fhuzo one linked a page or two back in the thread, and it's really good. Wide variety of terrain, stunning mountains, and more than enough space. Plus it's a direct download so you don't have to wrestle with the finicky terraformer!

We should keep updating the pack, but yes, the new OP definitely needs to go up, what with people getting frustrated with SC5.

On the note of updating the pack, I haven't been really into all the little nitty-gritty parks, but I do think we need to add the Irregular Beaches set. By default, if you want a beach town, it must be a perfectly straight beach with no corners or doglegs.

The OP pack is outdated but it's still quite good (and frankly, it's probably better put together than mine.) I'm going to include it in the new OP since the torrent is still quite active and it offers different stuff. There's also the Spergin' Gigapack buried somewhere in the thread, do people use that? If so I'll include it as well.

Anyone have anything intelligent to say about the technical side of things? I've installed SC4 on a couple of computers and never had much trouble getting it running, but from reading the thread I know others have had vastly different experiences. I feel like the tech section I've got sofar isn't very comprehensive, and I've probably forgotten some tips and tricks. Here's a little preview, let me know if I've left out anything glaring:

quote:

Firstly, you'll want either Sim City 4 Deluxe or the base game plus the Rush Hour expansion (included in Deluxe.) It's fairly difficult to buy just the base game these days, so this shouldn't be too much of a concern. But for the sake of information: Sim City 4 shipped before a lot of very basic bugs were really worked out; many of these have been fixed with Rush Hour. Still more have been fixed through mods, but we'll get to that later.

Sim City 4 is also a very old game, and newer hardware and software hasn't treated the game well. Still, for most people a little tweaking can make the game quite playable.

Here are a few basic things you can do to help Sim City 4 run better. Depending on your
operating system, many of them can be essential.

Multicore
This game is unstable on more than CPU: the game will actually run slower on more than
one core, and it will crash often. In your launch options, add the following to prevent this: -CPUcount:1

Custom Resolutions
Running a large or uncommon resolution? Well tough poo poo! Just kidding. Add a variation of this to your launch options:
-CustomResolution:enabled -r1366x768x32 -f
( -f is for fullscreen.)

Tired of seeing that same old splash video?
Gets a little old, doesn't it. Add this to the launch options: -intro:off

If you're still experiencing technical difficulties, there are also a few in-game options you can use to get things running smoother. By default the game is set to render in Hardware mode, but some graphics cards seem to have trouble with this; switching to Software rendering may alleviate some CTD's and stuttering. Shadows (like in many games) can be especially taxing as well, even on modern settings; switching them off can help as well.

Please keep in mind that this was an extremely resource-intensive game, and a lot of computers couldn't run it at the time of its release. Even today, you might experience some stuttering when running the sim on higher speeds, and downtime when playing (and especially saving) large cities. Your mileage may vary.

Iunnrais
Jul 25, 2007

It's gaelic.

The -CPUPriority:high option can also help when used IN ADDITION to -CPUCount:1

I also like to add -audio:off, because the SC4 music gets annoying after a while and I prefer to listen to other music while playing. And it seems more stable without the sound, but I'm not sure about that.

MAKE SURE YOUR GRAPHICS DRIVERS ARE UPDATED.

Even with updated drivers, some graphics cards just don't play well with SC4, but without updated drivers you can nearly guarantee crashing.

Make sure you add the Auto Saver to the OP as well.

The problem with the OP pack, in my opinion, is that everything is dat-packed, if you don't like something there is no way to remove it. (If there is a way I don't know how)

For people not using any of the goon megapacks that don't want to deal with dependencies (and who would?), then simply download this file, extract, and drop in your plugins folder. Within are the 26 most commonly used dependencies, which will cover most of the stuff you'll find out there that has dependencies.

A file with the list of all the files in the dependencies in the download is included, since older files on the STEX and such haven't been updated with new dependencies that compile earlier ones, etc. Just for future reference when downloading. Additionally, here's a shorter version of that list:

Is there a way that I can tell which nam or whatever I am using? I know I downloaded one from here after I nuked my computer a couple months ago, but I am not sure. I suppose changing it now would really change how my current cities look, huh??

And those canals, are you able to connect them with existing water??

Also, maybe one of you better people can explain how you go about planning your cities? I do region play, so I do a bunch of cities at once and try to plan out where my highways and trains will go ahead of time, build big industry ghettos to support nice burbs/cites, etc... But my cities don't seem to follow any exact plan. They're not nearly as neat as others that are posted here.

On my lunch I will try to get a screen shot of the current city I am starting if I have time. I'm using the San Fran region. It's currently where Oakland would be. I only started up a tiny bit of it thus far
