Does anyone play this on a mac? I kind of want a game to play with my mac when I'm at work. Also do these addons work with it? I also have the PC version so maybe I'll just stick to that.

A torrent would be really ace, if anyone could start one. I love the SC4 threads, and I really need to play it a helluva lot more. I think I'll make a point to save the plugin pack and all my regions and install SC4 every format with my other usual programs.

Ok, so this thread has intrigued me to install the game after about 6 months and now I'm starting to remember why I stopped playing it. ![]() I've installed the essentials pack and just started making two cities linked to one another (one for industry and one for residential) and after only ten minutes everything has hit the skids. It seems that no matter what I do, no one in my city can hold a job. I've built as much commerce and industry that demand will allow, have a small bus network that only a handful of people are using and commute times are only about 8-12 minutes, so why is this happening? Is there something else that influences jobs that I'm not aware of or is this some sort of bug?

I've always been able to build well, but the one thing I've never figured out how to do was to make my terrain designs not suck. (The irony of this is that I'm a geography major. Anyone have any particular advice?

One thing I've had happen is Sims driving in 'circles' between regions. It seems like the best way to build a region is to have only one way in and out of a city (or in some cases, a single exit/entrance by road, and a single one by rail) Also, you don't need water until you want to upgrade everyone to Middle Class, or you're trying to build up medium/high density zones.

I do remember water being stupidly expensive in SimCity 4 because you couldn't micromanage the sliders like you could with just about everything else. (Actually I probably will get back to the game at some stage, once I'm down with the SC3000 Let's Play.) I tend to be pretty spartan with my add-ons (though that one with the harbour in the OP looks mad keen) but I think the NAM is definitely worth it, just because I like having more options for roads and such. Also, the Hole Digging Lots are great for setting up terrain heights if you're picky about building tunnels or bridges so they look "just right". What's really fun is checking out everyone's different approach to building cities, from the OCD to the Walter Burley-Griffin aesthetic to the "eh I'll just slap that there" kind, and in fact a few years back we did have region games where everyone picked a different neighbourhood to mess around with.

Arghhhh So I consider myself a veteran SC4 player, but with my latest map I'm getting demand for all commercial and HT industry, but my residents are still complaining about jobs. It's the commute time, but buses and subway stations seem to be completely useless. How do I get people to actually use my mass transit and stop bitching about commute times? I never figured this one out.

Pipgirl posted:If you don't want any dirty industry or manufacturing at all you can tax them out of existence and it'll be extremely rare for them to come back. One of the things that always irked me about SC4 was the fact that you could just tax certain industries out of existance with no ill effects to the other industries. I was hoping that, with the regional aspect, you'd have to have X amount of, say, agricultural, then dirty industry. In turn the products from the dirty industry would support Manufacturing, and then so on up to high tech. That way you'd have to have a few small ditry industry cities, a big manufacturing center or two, and then your Silicon Valley-type city.

A couple more questions: So I've started a new region, and am playing on the entire region scope. However, my demands for each city are basically the same, and each region area is basically a copy of the previous one (I'm just paying attention to the demands for the various zones). The only thing that's really region play is that I'm making neighbor deals. How do I force my individual cities to take up a role, like making one city my dirty polluted zone for trash and dirty labor? Is it simply adjusting taxes, or do I ignore the demand bars and just build lots of industrial lots? Do I need to build schools in regions that are supposed to be dirty industry oriented? Hospitals? Should I have residential lots in my industry town and should they be watered? I feel like I'm asking too many questions on stuff I should figure out on my own, but when I try playing by myself each town is just a replica of the other and they are all unimpressive. anyways, if my questions are unwarranted, let me know. As to the question about how to make nieghbor deals, I can field that one! From the budget bar click on the budget tab and one of the options (among taxes, city ordinances, etc) is neighbor deals. You need roads going to the adjacent town and/or pipes to exchange trash and/or water.

I know this is probly going to have some easy answer that i'm overlooking, but how do I install the giga pack? do I just put all those folders into the plugins folder? the folders in those folders? the folders inside THOSE folders?

Extract directly into your plugins folder. Preferably the one in your My Documents folder (or whatever the user folder in OSX is, if that's how you roll - if SimCity 4 even uses that in OSX.), as opposed to the folder it's installed in. Back up your old plugins first, if you care about that sort of thing.Madcosby posted:How do I force my individual cities to take up a role, like making one city my dirty polluted zone for trash and dirty labor? A little column A, a little column B. quote:Do I need to build schools in regions that are supposed to be dirty industry oriented? Hospitals? Should I have residential lots in my industry town and should they be watered? NOW WITH SPOILER TAGS because this pretty much takes the challenge right the hell out of the game and double-taps it in a blind alley: This is the whole point of Region Play: you can make a city totally industrial - and the practical (almost total broken and/or cheating bastard) beauty of it is that if there's no residential in the town, there's no crime, no need for schools or health care, nothing. Just industries and maybe some fire stuff. (Water's good though if you want I-M in it.) Also the roads. Also leave especially dirty things in with them. Waste to Energy, polluting power plants, your laundry, etc. I should note, however, that I-Ag won't live there, and I-HT is actually just fine sitting right next to your Commercial and Residential zones. In the town that's not dirty industry. (If you got taxes on D and M at 20% and they still try to get in when you put in the Industrial zone, just knock that fucker down.) NOTE: The above may be perceived as broken and/or cheating. Or as much as an exploit in a sandbox game can be cheating, anyway. Oh man I did it. I finally built a stable, profitable, successful city. Its in small city-lot, with road connections to my 2 larger cities and its...its beautiful... Also, Every single square of land is taken up. Thats right. Every single one. Wherever I couldnt squeeze in another one tile residential or commercial, I would just plop down a small plaza. Some cases, early on in the city, when things would be abandoned I would just surround them with Plaza tiles and in less than a year POOF back to business. Its got 2 elementary schools, one library, one highschool, and one private school. Its also got a hospital in the middle that covers every building but one with coverage. Its solar/wind powered and its my little baby favorite city 4evr. I think its pretty does anyone want a screenie of my first successful city?

I like screenshots of anybody's successful cities. Heck, I just like screen shots. This game is so nice to look at. I'm currently trying to determine why some of my people are jobless. There seems to be nothing I can do to help them out, nothing I can really build to satisfy them, including adding to my dirty industry city (the people in question are in big tenement buildings). It's very frustrating.

Here's a pic of a fun region I played for six months or so before the Road Top Mass Transit mod killed it. I started restoring it to how it was before the mod, but it'd take about 20 hours to replace all the missing roads and rework the transit system, so I just shelved it for the time being. This is using the Cape Newenham AK region by Flamesrock. All of his maps are here if anyone wants it.
