What are we talking about in terms of "forrrrrever"? I installed the gigapack and it basically looked like it hung the game, so I removed everything but the essentials. Now it turns out I could have just been impatient?

haha Now you fools see why I keep my game as unmolested as possible!

Here's a screenshot of what it looks like: Are you playing at the highest resolution? This was a bug with the game where it can't render large city plots at the highest resolution right, so you get that lovely bar across the bottom. No fix for it that I know of other than not playing at the highest res the game supports

Now way was I actually going to see what kind of load time there would be when I selected a city.

Dootman posted:This is a known problem running at that resolution. It's just a minor graphical glitch that only occurs on super huge city lots in region view and doesn't affect game play at all. The only way to get rid of it would be to run the game in a lower resolution. A friend of mine has the same glitch on a not-super huge sized city lot in 1920x1200. That make sense? Although I personally consider it punishment for the fact he's running Simcity at 1920x1200 and I'm not. MikeJF fucked around with this message at Mar 2, 2008 around 06:09 |

Vanshnook posted:http://ifile.it/15m7nzc That region preview bug is probably the same reason that you end up with a blank square if you minimize the game while you're saving, which is the same reason I ended up with an all-blank region from minimizing it while importing one. But, I haven't had your particular manifestation of it at 1280x1024.Even on my old system, the game only took something like 30-40 seconds to load with the megapack. It's only a little less than that on my new one, but still, I don't know why you're doing so badly with it. Try grabbing the Dat packer from SC4Devotion. That's a utility to compile/compress your plugin directory into a .dat file so that it (supposedly) loads faster. I haven't messed with it because my plugin folder has been in too much of a state of flux lately, but you guys might as well give it a go.

Has anyone made or discovered any recreations of real life cities? SC1 and 2 had scenarios that featured some and it was awesome; I still mourn the lack of scenarios in the later games. Sometimes I just want to manage a new nice looking city but not have to build it up first.

That post may or may not get some questions so I'll just preempt them incase, but the way to run Sim City 4 in a window is by adding -w to the shortcut arguments. Could be OP material, since I know I like to run these sorts of games in a window so I can gently caress with other stuff while the city is idling. e: clarity Renounced fucked around with this message at Mar 2, 2008 around 12:16 |

Dumb question, but where are all the buildings contained in the gigapack? I patched the game and put it into the plugin folder, but I'm not seeing many new options, only a few. Are they not ploppable or what?

I'm pretty sure a lot of the new buildings are with CAM, and I believe are not plopable. I'm not running with the latests pack though. I've already got 2 gigs of mods... As for load times, Yeah, they get a bit long when you start packing in the mods. Look on SC4 Devotion for the DAT Packer (if it hasn't come up already) it tends to help the game all around.

It's really interesting to see you guys who play with a clear objective in mind. Myself, when I fire up SC4 I basically just throw down some zones haphazardly, plop some streets around in some fashion that looks interesting, then get frustrated when it doesn't work out. I'm pretty sure I have SC4 ADD

Martytoof posted:It's really interesting to see you guys who play with a clear objective in mind. The biggest thing you can do without too much planning ahead is to intelligently place neighborhoods. Don't just plop down a 30x30 tile of residential and expect everything to work out. When I start out I like to place subdivisions with lots of dead end roads and 1 square sized lots. In the empty spaces between the lots you can place trees, and later parks, playgrounds, and other recreational areas. Also its really important and has been mentioned before, but don't build ANY public service or gift buildings until you absolutely have to if you want to maintain a balanced budget. edit: here's a city I've been working on this week. This image is a little out of date, but you get the idea. I'm just about to pass 50k residents. I'm doing the standard region play strategy of putting power plants, industry, waste to energy in a neighboring city.

Anyone else getting a bug where areas are displayed as flat grasslands in the region view? Or that water transfer deals get reset every time you exit a map?

Can somebody walk me through the loving hole digging process? I'm about to destroy my keyboard with my forehead here. I'm trying to make a sunken highway with walls and I'm ending up with either triangular incisions in the landscape, which are impossible to reverse with the same tools, or large fuckoff holes in which my highway is one or two tiles away from the walls. The best part is loving up once, having to reload the city and start over.

Or is it looked upon as too flawed and ignored. I'm in grad school for city and regional planning, pretty much every classmate of mine from a middle-class background played a lot of SimCity as a kid. I've been in arguments over the relative accuracy of the urban modeling portion (consensus is that it's not accurate for a number of reasons) but everyone agrees that it's still a very fun game.

Does the environment rating act as a pop cap? Everything else in the opinion poll box is entirely or almost entirely green, but my environment rating is in the toilet. This is a high density residential and commercial city, so there's no industry I can knock down to improve the rating. What can I do, aside from passing the relevant ordinances, to reduce pollution? I've already got an extensive public transport network.

Question about the Giga plugin pack from the OP: do I just unzip it in the Simcity plugin directory, or is there any installation process? Sorry if this has already been answered, and thanks to the OP!

Unzip it to the plugin directory. You can use either the one in Program Files or the one in My Documents.

Can anyone help me with my health care? I have a 300,000 pop city pretty densely packed and all my facilities are maxing out and going on strike. I figure it's because my city is so densely packed that they get overfilled. I've plopped down an absurd amount of facilities but they all just get maxed out. I tried playing with sliders but it doesn't seem to help much. This is pretty much my only problem that keeps popping up as the city grows. Is there any solution other then to spread out my population?

You'll have to try to reduce the ambulance funding so that each hospital has a very small radius of effect and then fill in the new gaps with additional hospitals. Think of how many people are in just a single high rise apartment building in this game, with each hospital maxing out at around 5000 patients.
