I've noticed that the Radiator fans on the newer Proteges are nice and compact as well. They're actually two fans side by side in a narrow package.

car-part.com is telling me that A&L near Tilbury has a couple of late model Proteges to scavenge from. Might be worth taking a look at since its close. I've attached a diagram of the cooling fans from the shop manual.

Haha, I've owned two Escorts and done a couple of front brake jobs on both and almost every time the front bolts backed off after driving for a while. Must be something with the design.

Oh, and it looks like a homestead may be in the future for the Mrs. and myself, so a two car garage and the ability to work at home and not drive 40-loving-minutes each way to perform ANY work on my car should speed things up significantly with both cars.

Given the speed at which you work right now I can't imagine how many projects you'll blast through once you have a Garage.

I'm going to have to avoid driving near Sarnia for fear of my engine being surprise swapped if I get too close to your house.

Sock I figured you might be interested in this. Canadian Tire has full size T8 fluorescent shop lights complete with hanging chains for $4.98 each as part of that every kilowatt counts campaign. I don't know if your new garage is equipped yet but even if it is you cant beat that price.

Why is that hack jobs like those door locks are always done with drywall screws? If you're going to do a poor job of something self tapping screws will at least let you do it quicker.

I wish. They took everything including the outside clock. I did however get to keep the exhaust fan, gas furnace, and the somewhat questionable wiring in the workbench.

I also don't think it'll be able to handle a cool overhead engine hoist like yours unless I beef up the woodwork.

Hey sock, what year is your focus, and how do you like it as an automatic DD? I'm thinking of going with an automatic ZX5 or Protege5 for a DD.

My experience with the Protege5 was that the automatic was weak. Mine slipped a few times on hard acceleration and I sold it before I killed it. The automatic in the P5 and Focus is nearly identical. First gear is useless and just makes a lot of noise and then it falls flat on its face into second. I think thats an ECU issue though.

However I will say that the auto box in the P5 has buttery smooth shifts. Sometimes I felt like it was trying too hard to make the shifts smooth when you put your foot into it, resulting in a hesitation between gears. It was really excellent in stop and go traffic and did some clever things like holding a gear a little longer under acceleration or on hills. In comparison the autobox in my Impreza feels like it shifts quicker but it likes to plop into fifth all the time to save fuel.

From what I've read on the Mazda forums, the valve body upgrade makes a HUGE improvement on performance, it increases fluid pressure so shifts are much quicker and firmer.

Be careful about this because although it will definitely improve the performance of the transmission it will also definitely make it a harsher ride. That said I would love to see how well the "manumatic" shifting works with one of these valve body upgrades because I found it so slow that I stopped using it pretty much the second day I owned the car. It only ended up being useful in winter when I wanted to hold it in a gear while plowing through snow.

I really miss my P5 but it wasn't meant to be. It was just too pretty and delicate for driving in Canada :(

The only handy thing about the QuickStruts is the ease of installation. Take off a half dozen bolts, re-torque, and they're in.

I think the other nice thing about them is that you get a refresh of every part from top to bottom including the spring. They don't seem to have them for Subarus though, which is stupid because the vast majority of Subarus use pretty much the same struts on the front.
