$700 seems like a good price for an IBM carbine with IBM barrel. Is it a referb or does it have all WWII features? A guy local to me that sells at the fleamarket has had an IBM for sale for a while now in nice shape for $600 cash, no talking him down on it. I've thought about picking it up, but i've been buying carbines for less locally until very recently (i.e. until like a month ago).

Motherf... I have had my eye on a very nice WW2 SA Garand for a while, but today I saw that the 1941 Johnson I had my eyes on got a heavy price reduction and is now in the "a-lot-of-money-but-an-OK-price-for-a-Johnson"-range. There is no way I can get both, but now I have a difficult decision to make. I have a few Garands and a Johnson already so this makes it even more difficult.

Whats a Johnson worth in your area now? I know what you mean, it never feels like enough does it? The M1941 is one nifty rifle though. Also, just playing around on the net tonight, for fun i searched to see what a model gun/non-firing replica of a Japanese Type 100 SMG would cost. After all, even if i did find one for sale, and even if i could afored it; i'd never shoot it as A) replacement parts are impossible and B) 8mm Nambu is about the most spendy pistol round out there for a standard WWII gun. So yeah, i thought maybe someone was making a decent model for a couple hundred bucks that would fill the hole in my collection as an example piece. You know, like you find with Thompsons all the time. Well i did find some and.... Holy fuckballs Batman! $1,400 nearly for a late war Type 100/44 metal & wood model, $1,500 for an early war 100/40 with bipod and bayo lug, and.....loving $2k for one with the folding stock which the Navy used! Forget that drat idea. I see the Thompson models for $300 (cheap) and $800 (made from original parts). So i was expecting something at least a little similar for a Type 100 model. Oh well, so it goes. I was just playing around out of boredum anyway tonight. I do have some neat C&R stuff coming in next week. Also, that Remington Model 11 SPORTSMAN shotgun with 'US' and 'Military Finish' marks on the receiver as well as the flaming bomb on it and the 2 barrels, sold on GB for $650 last night. I honestly thought it would fetch a bit more, but oh well, i got what i needed out of it and more importantly i helped a friend out by buying it off him along with his 1917 Eddystone. Which insidently also sold for $650 on GB, which was more than i thought it would bring. Just goes to show you.... Night TFR...

Since you all are talking about your Johnsons, there's one for sale on a local gun board http://texasguntrader.com/index.php?a=2&b=208951 . $4,500.00 seems high, but one of you may be interested. The seller notes that some nit-wit etched their DL number on the receiver.

Curses! It appears that Sportsman's Guide has the cheapest prices on .303 British, but they are back ordered until October. I assume by that point we'll have already begun to see the slow/fast increase in ammo prices as gun owners get all crazy over the election.

You buy the ammo now, then resell in October for a profit.

http://www.armslist.com/posts/43868...int-sporterised What a shame. Out of curiosity, what would one need to restore it? To me it looks like you'd need to drop it into a new stock, add the front barrel band, and a new rear sight? I suppose it's been drilled and tapped for that peep sight too, but.
|
| # ? Jun 19, 2012 21:38 |

I'll almost guaranteed it was drilled and tapped for that peep sight, in which case it's basically a write-off. Replacing the rear sight base isn't trivial work and would require a gunsmith who knew what they were doing. I'll also add that the bluing looks very much like a re-blue job, although the pictures suck so I'm not going to live or die by that assessment. Honestly the thing is just a mess. For what you would put into restoring it ($100-150 for a stock, ~$25 for the rings and other missing stock bits, maybe ~$50 for an appropriate rear sight assembly, plus whatever your gunsmith would want for all that labor) you're well into the cost of an honest single part mismatch, and that gun is already going to be at best a multi-part mismatch: the rear sight was also numbered on '43 oberndorf guns.

Mishaco posted:$820? I thought it was $700+shipping? If I were to buy it there is 10% tax + $50 FFL, plus shipping, so even more I guess? The S&W is better in pretty much every way. High polish blue, better fit, better action, better sights, lighter, feels better in the hand, lighter double and crisper single actions. Frankly, I am a bit surprised that S&W put so much work into them given the shortcuts that most companies seemed to take advantage of on war time guns.
