I don't get to post a whole lot in ADTRW. But since it's a virtual guarantee that nobody else is gonna care about this show, it is my civic DUTY to inform you of what is CLEARLY the single greatest show of the Spring 2008 season. Not Code Geass. Not even Macross Frontier. No sir, I'm talking 'bout THE DUKE: GOLGO 13. The baddest motherfucking stone-cold killer to ever walk the Earth. More cunning than Light Yagami. More ruthless than Lelouch Lamperouge. And more awesome than Kamina and the entire cast of Gurren-Lagann combined. Perhaps you've never heard of the man. Worry not, the end credits sequence will summarize what is going to happen for the next FIFTY EPISODES of this new TV series. You heard right. He's where this emoticon comes from: Golgo 13 has sex with women: Then, after successfully busting his nut and making her come 13 times, promptly gets dressed and gets the gently caress out of there: What's that smell? Let me spell it out for you: P-I-M-P. After that, it's down to business; bustin' caps in anyone dumb enough to get in his way: What is his business? Contract assassination. You want someone sniped, Golgo 13 is your man if you can afford him. In fact, he's so hardcore, he snipes people with a goddamn M-16: Then after he's done killin', it's PORKIN' TIME: And the cycle begins anew. For around forty years, this unstoppable fighting and loving machine has blazed a trail across the manga world, fulfilling the fantasy of generation upon generation of middle-aged Japanese salarymen who don't traditionally watch anime. Forget about shonen or shojo, this is SEINEN, baby! To date, there's only been a single Golgo 13 animated movie and a single Golgo 13 OAV, both courtesy of Osamu Dezaki and Akio Sugino. Now we have this beautiful bastard of a television show, but unfortunately those dudes are busy working on the lovely anime adaptation of Ultraviolet, and they probably took all the animation budget with them. The CG in this show? Not exactly impressive. Movement? Pretty minimal. But that's cool. Golgo 13's a manga character first and foremost. That the anime at times resembles a slightly animated comicbook with voices is fine with me, even though Golgo 13 himself sounds a bit too young and the opening theme song sounds like it should be used for a shonen fighting show or something. But they got the most important part right: Golgo 13, aka "Duke Togo," has ONE facial expression. It doesn't change. Ever. Especially not when he's banging chicks: A man of few words, he is undoubtedly thinking "hmm. This is...happening. Around me. Right now." Unless he's thinking of killing. But really, he's probably not thinking of anything because he is the Zen motherfuckin' MASTER. That's right, because Golgo 13? Is good at everything. Move over MacGuyver. Back off, Bond. You don't want a piece of THIS: Fifty episodes may seem like an awful lot, but don't worry: each Golgo 13 storyline is standalone and there is no continuity or recurring characters aside from our hero. So far it seems as though they're just going for relatively straight-up adaptations of manga storylines; episode 2 is going to be an animated version of the storyline that was published in the US decades ago under the title "The Impossible Hit." To learn more about Golgo 13, please listen to my podcast and read my SWEET article about him in the April 2008 issue of Otaku USA magazine (the one with Ichigo from Bleach on the cover). Golgo 13 is quite easily the most awesome character in anime and manga history, but between the complex dialogue on the parts of everyone NOT Golgo 13--he himself barely speaks--and the fact that there are no pretty boys or loli girls, the chances of all/any of this getting subtitled is slim to none. Then again, that's what they say about the shots Golgo 13 makes on a regular basis.

I had seen the manga described as Japans answer to James Bond. Are there any real parallels between the two other than the fact that both protagonists gently caress lots of women and kill people?

Since I missed the first shot, I guess I'll follow through and repost my thread's OP here ![]() ゴルゴ13 Episodes: 50 Airtime in Japan (JST): Fridays at 25:23 Airtime in U.S. (EST): Fridays at 12:23 Studio: Answer Studio (Based on 40 year running manga by Takao Saito) Wikipedia: Here Trailer: Shaky Camera & short Japanese Site: TV Tokyo Site OP / ED Takao Saito's Website posted:A world class hit man, the ultimate Professional fulfills contracts under the alias of "GOLGO13". Without allegiance to any group, cause, or nation, he follows his own personal code when choosing "jobs". And once he accepts a contract, it is always honored. Duke "Golgo 13" Togo has been described as being Japan's "James Bond"; in a way, I suppose that's sort of true, perhaps in terms of the Ian Fleming version of the character, but far more withdrawn. The first thing you have to keep in mind about Golgo is that he is extremely calm and calculating. A veritable genius, Golgo has put his skills and intelligence into becoming reknown as the world's best assassin. He'll take a contract for a right price (~$1,000,000 usually), but he never commits senseless butchery, or takes contracts on targets that don't meet his personal code for killing. No one knows his past, his origin, even why he kills. ![]() Once Golgo 13 takes a contract on you, you're hosed. You're as good as dead. You might as well start digging your grave, writing your will, and paying your last respects, because no matter what you do, no matter where you hide, he will get you. ![]() Golgo 13 is one of the longest running manga in history. It was started January 1st, 1969, and just recently the 142nd volume was released. There tends not to be an overarching story to the tales; rather, they focus on individual jobs that Golgo takes, on the nature and reason behind the jobs, and what Golgo does to actually kill them. It's assumed that the anime will reflect this, though there could be an overarching plot; wouldn't be the first time several arcs of jobs were interrelated, to be sure. In a way, you could look at Golgo 13 like Detective Conan or Lupin III, except with killing people (actually, the Detective Conan screenwriter Lupin III Movie screenwriter are both working on this, so )![]() This isn't Golgo's first venture into other mediums then manga. There's been a Golgo 13 live action movie, a Golgo 13 animated movie ("The Professional"), an OVA ("Queen Bee", and a couple NES games (you might remember our dear fellow Slowbeef doing an Let's Play of "Top Secret Episode"). In fact, if you want to watch a clip from "The Professional" to see if you'd like it, here's a dubbed clip that I got permission from Menacer to link. If you don't find this cool even in the slightest, this series might not be for you! One thing I'm going to warn now is uh... this anime is going to be very mature. There's a lot of violence (though it's not all that gorey). There is, in fact, some sex. If you don't want that, don't watch it. And please, please, do not, do NOT go on and on about the sex scenes. Yes, Golgo bangs chicks, all while glaring with his angry eyebrows. It's okay to find that in particular badass and hilarious at the same time. I'm a bit divided myself! Are there any real parallels between the two other than the fact that both protagonists gently caress lots of women and kill people? As hopefully noted in the podcast I linked to, the original creator of Golgo 13, Takao Saito, got his start doing manga adaptations of the Ian Fleming Bond novels. He drew 007 to look more or less like how Golgo 13 now looks today. Here's a link with more information. Like the movies, they really don't have much in common with the books at all. For instance, Blofeld is black and wears an eyepatch. At some point Bond dresses up like a gladiator and fights a lion inside a Roman coliseum. You know, stuff like that! Every time I post in this thread I will share a Golgo 13 fact with the uninitiated. * Golgo 13 Never speaks Idly, but his speech is said to be beautifully modulated; a film director who encountered him once remarked that he had "the voice of a movie star." Golgo 13 is the ultimate male fantasy wank character. He can do anything and every woman he meets wants him to bang them with no rubber and every man he meets mentally establishes their inferiority to him. I'm going to watch the raw right loving now because all men should watch/read everything related to Golgo 13. Also, Sonny Chiba made a great Duke Togo in 1977's "Golgo 13: Kowloon Assignment". I love the narration at the end of the movie that explains to you straight out just how loving amazing Golgo 13 is, in case the previous 90 minutes didn't convince you.

I saw the animated versions years and years ago, and loved it. I see that Viz is releasing the manga, but it seems to be only a "greatest hits" sort of thing. Has any translation group ever tackled this online?

Golgo has been running for a really long time - there's at least 100 volumes now, so just publishing it from the beginning wouldn't work out. I think Viz has published enough to keep anyone occupied for a while by now, and they even have the story where Nelson Mandela talks about meeting Golgo in prison in one of the early volumes. It really is the greatest hits.

* Golgo 13 once told a client that he would break down his own professional methods as "10% talent...20% effort...30% cowardice...the remaining 40% is...probably luck." Wow, the shot at the end of ep 1 was pretty drat cool. I thought the whole episode was done well for what the show is. I'm enjoying the idea of the shorter manga stories being animated, it makes a nice change of pace from the feature length Golgo 13 anime outings so far. The only gripe I had was that the OP song was loving bollocks and doesn't fit in with the show. I can't wait for it to be changed 12-25 eps in. Speaking of the Second Coming, if Golgo 13 accepted a assignment to take out Jesus, you would be looking for a new saviour a week or two later. He always completes the jobs he accepts, without fail.

I'm not trying to troll here, but I have to ask how a character who has no character development and is absolutely static is fun to watch? I mean, beyond say 2-3 episodes. I can understand the attitude being what you're interested in, and I myself loved Hokuto no Ken. But then again, Kenshiro as a character actually did develop and change a bit. Golgo 13 just looks like one of the most boring protagonists ever. As a gimmick, I'm sure he'd be great. But 50 episodes of this (let alone 130+ manga volumes written by different creators over and over again)? As I write this however, I'm starting to see Golgo 13 as something akin to say, Superman. He's a character who doesn't really have development and is written to be whatever whoever is writing him to be wants. And people still read Superman. I guess I just don't have any interest in that style of story-telling.

Lupin III never really developed as a character because he's who he is. You watch it to see how Golgo does things. There is no overarching development to him because he's not doing anything in these that really effect him whatsoever. He murders people a lot. He doesn't seem to care much. It's what he does. He does incredible things, super human things, just because its what he's paid to do. Also, Golgo is written by the same guy over the course of fourty years. That hasn't changed. In general, this is a series about "finding out how he does the next job".

Just the leaked rumour that an ex-cop had hired Duke Togo to take out a criminal kingpin had him pissing his pants, turning himself in and confessing the next day. My only complaint about the manga is a lot of the secondary characters look ugly as all hell. Even Golgo 13 had to do the spy chick in Supergun from behind because her face was a car wreck. While not as seriously hosed in the head as say, Wounded Man or Crying Freeman, the Golgo 13 manga is packed full of awesomely far-fetched moments like the ones Surat has already mentioned. * Golgo's erection is so powerful that he has been observed to maintain it even when interrupted by police mid-coitus.

Carl Horn hand-selected 26 stories himself, so each volume generally contains one "newer" story (usually from the 90s) and one "older" story (usually from the 70s).
