YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

I found myself very disappointed in Marvel Heroes. They only have a little less than a month to release, and I already saw a few "placeholder" names on what I assume are unique champions. Literally read "Placeholder Maggia Boss."

Also the early game is REALLY slow. I picked Captain America to start with, and until I got the shield move that bounces up to 4 enemies, then the game seemed to pick up a bit.

I of course chose then to check the cash shop, and saw they gave us 2k to buy another hero, and then grabbed Deadpool. He has some good quips, like "I need more vespene gas" when he was out of spirit; However he was more of the same initial grind. Of course it was a little exasperated with the fact that I was now further in the game, with a level 1 character. I slogged through until I got the caltrops ability, then things got a lot easier as everything around me took a lot of bleeding damage.

I hope they can either speed up the ability gain, make the beginning abilities more interesting, or at least shuffle the abilities you gain around. The 2 characters i used both got stuns first, but getting the stun abilities when all you fight is mobs of weak enemies isn't much fun.

To be fair, you can revisit old areas to grind new heroes up to reasonable level (or, as I'm sure they're hoping, buy an XP boost potion from the cash shop.)

Actually, there's a VERY big chance that Activision will push out yet another Spider-Man game for the upcoming movie.

They know that people will buy it, no matter how terrible it is. They have Spider-Man fans on their very forum (created in joint with Marvel Comics themselves) constantly saying how they'd by the new Spider-Man game if it had A, B, and C in it.

Basically, Spider-Man (and Call of Duty) are Activision's cash cows. They're not going to let that go just for some mobile game or online-only game.

They may make it for iOS and Android as well, but it'll also be on PS3, PS4, 360, 720 (whatever it's called), Wii, Wii U, 3DS, and Vita. Or whatever consoles and handhelds are the most popular at the time of development.

I didn't say it wasn't coming. They're clearly making a Spider-Man game, they renewed the license. I'm just very confident it'll be total dogshit.

That much is very true. It'll be dogshit simply because Activision does it for the money and only the money. Beenox may have their heart in the right place but Activision just doesn't care. If X-Men Destiny taught us anything, Activision will put out anything even if it's half finished just to make a buck off of fans who don't know any better.

If you want a sequel play Prototype. It's made by the same developer and plays very similar, it's pretty much UD with Venom as the protagonist.

I loved UD and I never liked either Prototype game as much as it, honestly. Maybe it is the nostalgia glasses, but it felt like they did a better job integrating the Hulk's powers and abilities in the gameplay and provided a great challenge curve (From tanks to Hulkbusters), while Prototype had wonderful ideas and mechanics (Even better than UD, I admit) that never felt like it came together as well.

Prototype 2 does get extra points for having the greatest tag team of cartoonishly evil militia and hilariously incompetent scientists since the Umbrella Corporation.

BOGGLE?

The first Prototype has issues where the story just kind of falls apart 3/4 of the way through. For some reason the game just ditches all of the characters you had previously been dealing with and you start working with a different guy for the end of the game. Also the game had a bunch of powers and combos that only worked on humans but human characters in the game are so weak that hitting them with a normal attack kills them instantly.

Prototype was really fun just to travel around and punt things, but the missions were overly repetitive and the art direction (red overtones and grime everywhere) didn't appeal to me. Also, those mutant enemies that had unbreakable attack animations were annoying.

Still, running up a skyscraper and gliding everywhere is one of the best features. Also, jump-kicking helicopters.

The experience really varies by hero to hero.

Cyclops is awful to play at first but once you can build him into a ranged glass cannon fairly easily.

Iron Man is crazy easy to play AND has a travel power.

Hulk is just insane. You can build a cool Tank/DPS hybrid with little to no theorycraft. If you're moving around a map and suddenly 4-5 bodies go flying past you, that's a Hulk.

For that you get the head, the tail...

The whole damned thing.

What are some un-tapped superhero games they could make? This came up in the Man of Steel thread and how hard it is to make games with heroes that are overpowered or whose powers are too complex, like Supes, Green Lantern, Dr. Strange, etc.

It sounds dumb, maybe, but I think an open world Aquaman could be pretty sweet, done in the style of Echo the Dolphin or Treasures of the Deep. Just set the entire thing like Arkham Asylum only have it underwater and then invent puzzles that play to Aquaman's powers, like letting him use fish to swim here, distract 'x', fetch 'y' or throw switch 'z'. Give him giant seahorses to ride on and all that.

I know there was a Daredevil game in development that got canceled, but I think he could work in a game too if handled right. You could use sound, sonar and some nifty graphic effects to display his powers, sort of like the Arkham "detective vision" thing.

A decent Fantastic Four game should be able to practically make itself but no one's done it yet.

It's weird how often the people that make these games fail to capitalize on the the things that make the heroes special and build the game mechanics around that instead of just making a fighting game or shoe-horning Thor or Wolverine into God of War.

SilverMike

TBD

I suppose you could come up with a contrived reason for a Lantern to have forgotten how to properly use her powers and make it into a game with Metroidvania style locks to bar progress where you get more tools for exploring and fighting as you remember how to mold your power into various things. Would be odd from a lore point of view, but possible to pull off.

For that matter, a game centered around Rogue could work as an action puzzler where you need to think of increasingly complex ways to abuse stolen powers.

Basically like you said, it does come down to being lazy/safe in developing games with superhero licensing. I don't know how much it costs to get the rights for various heroes, but I'd assume the bigger names are going to demand a fair whack.

I always thought a Daredevil game that's pitch black most of the time and has the sonic waves coming off of things that are making noise which shows the environment briefly. You could have a button that would make him tap his stick against a wall or stamp his foot to reveal a little bit around him, better armed enemies would move differently and make different waves, etc. Suppose it would get old quickly though, maybe a Marvel Knights game with his levels working like that and the other characters having their own stuff to deal with.

Yeah, that would have to be an ensemble game, but that could be cool. Stealthy DD level, brawling Luke Cage level, Punisher levels that are just Max Payne levels, etc

There actually was a plan for a tie-in to the movie that worked like that, though I think it was going to be used more like Batman's Detective Vision, but the game was scrapped.

Exactly. I know a lot of jokes are made about a Daredevil game being a black screen, but if they did it like Arkham's detective vision mode and showed things that he could smell, trails he could follow, cries of distress he could detect in Hell's Kitchen, make clever use of sound like the way the Silent Hill games do, where he could hear heartbeats and enemies breathing and poo poo like that, you could have yourself a nifty little stealth game somewhere between Arkham Asylum, Spiderman and Splinter Cell.

Dude could bust out lights to gain a stealth advantage to where the darker it got, the more freaked out, scared and ineffective the enemies became and you could actually make fear and darkness part of the gameplay, sort of like the Batman Begins game tried to do. Making the room dark would be an essential part of the level or whatever.

You could even have courtroom levels/chapters where Matt is trying a case and work the trial according to what he can hear, smell, etc. and what he knows from gathering clues and kicking rear end as Daredevil. Or L.A. Noire style stuff with him and Foggy when some weird femme fatale walks into the office with a case. Make Bullseye, Gladiator and Stiltman unlockable characters.

I don't know. I love Daredevil and want to kick rear end with him in a game some day. He's the most underrated and consistently the best written Marvel superhero there is.

Nearly a year after its release, I finally finished playing Amazing Spider-Man. Probably the most fun I've had yet with a Beenox game, though not without nagging issues here and there. Mainly, how close they kept the camera behind Spidey and that trying to chain web rushes seemed rather inefficient. Why would I try to plot out a point to rush to if the game's just gonna bounce me off two buildings in the process of getting there? I just web-slinged wherever and found that to be the fastest mode of transportation.

On another note, I saw a new copy of Ultimate Alliance: Gold Edition in a farm & fleet store of all places for $20, then saw a used copy at a gaming store here for $60. Is it actually that sought after that a place would still charge full price for an open copy? I'm guessing if anything it has to do with the DLC that got pulled off XBL.

E: Also after beating the game, I discovered I was at 699/700 comic pages and I can't find the last flying page even after swinging all across Manhattan with a fine toothed comb.

The DLC for M:UA 1 and M:UA 2 no longer exist on Xbox Live (the PSN also no longer has the M:UA 2 DLC, the M:UA 1 DLC is Xbox 360 exclusive due to a few factors).

The reason for this is Activision let the license to sell those characters lapse a few years ago (and told no one until it was gone and people bitched them out for it).

The DLC for M:UA 1 is only found in the Gold Edition as it's on-disc. The DLC for M:UA 2 is gone forever.
