Ask me about losing 200lbs, and becoming the Viking God of W&W.

One day, about a month and a half ago, I woke up and knew that it was time to make a change. I'd been making smaller changes like cutting out soda and trying to break my addiction to video games, and on that day I was finally able to step onto my scale and get a reading other than "Error, too fat to be weighed". That was a huge problem considering it was a scale rated to 410lbs. I was able to get a reading of 407lbs and that was a shock that went through me like a lightning bolt. I realized all of the things I had been subconsciously denying these past few years and I immediately enacted sweeping changes.

The warning signs had always been there; having a blood test for diabetes and dreading the result with a fear that I had never experienced before (It came back negative and I was safe for now). Being on blood pressure medicine when I once told myself as a teenager I would never be one of those people that needed to be on pills. Refusing to look at myself in the mirror. A doctor's appointment where the scale wasn't working correctly and then lying that the weight they showed was correct when I knew it was off by about 70lbs and saying that yes I'd been losing weight. Barely fitting in plane seats and concert seats. Meeting a psychologist that was entirely drunk in a New Orleans bar and him having a moment of clarity where he said he knew what I wanted to do with life but was afraid to do it and that the moment would come to me soon.

When I saw that 407 on the scale, all of that hit me like a ton of bricks and I began attacking my issues with a fervor I had never known.

Using the information I gathered here, I spoke with my doctor and decided upon a plan. I would try a rather large calorie deficit and cardio at first to get to the point where I actually had enough energy to do anything and would regain some self esteem coupled with frequent checkups and blood tests to make sure everything was OK.

That first week of eating healthy, high protein foods spread across multiple meals and drinking only water, I dropped under 400lbs for the first time in what I assume has been years. I also quit drinking, which was a huge step for me. I was becoming an alcoholic, which was compounded by the fact that I'm a beer snob and only liked expensive beer. The savings in money directly translates to a gym membership. $60 case of beer now is about two months gym membership!

That was March 11th. Fast forward today. Last week, I found out I was going to be a father, adding a greater motivator than any I'd have before. This is probably a gigantic coincidence, but that day I decided to start all of this is the likely the day after my wife conceived. I'm about 50 days in, and I'm down 23lbs so far. I wanted to make this thread so I could add another piece of structure to this change and have a record outside of an excel spreadsheet of my progress. I will eventually include before and after pictures. My short term goal right now is 375, with a long term goal hovering around 230 (maybe less, but I haven't weighed 230 since grade school).

Congrats on starting out in the right direction with some pretty solid results so far, it's a great thing you're doing for your wife, your future family, and yourself. Remember that it is all so very worth it and that once you get there you will not recognize yourself or your former lifestyle, and will never ever want to go back.

Okay -- you talk WAY too fast.

Great work! Start lifting freeweights when you join that gym (have someone help you out with spotting and your form, and don't listen to any trainers that say anything about "high reps for toning" or "squats are bad for your knees" or "deadlifts are bad for your back). Don't get discouraged when the weight loss slows or plateaus. You're doing fantastic work, and if you keep eating healthily, remain alcohol-free and just keep AT it you're going to be a completely different person before you know it. Just remember that the goal isn't a weight: it's a lifestyle.

Ask me about losing 200lbs, and becoming the Viking God of W&W.

Just did my week 8 weigh in. This was a tough week, as my wife had been previously eating the same things as me, but now the pregnancy cravings are starting to kick in.

I talked to my brother, and once he graduates on the 10th, he said he would start lifting with me.

I started this week at 384.2 and ended up at 381.4. I am now only about 7 lbs away from my first goal of 375!

Ask me about losing 200lbs, and becoming the Viking God of W&W.

Thanks for the support all, it truly does help. My real test is coming up at the end of this month when I go to Vegas.

I talked to my brother again and he said he is ready to go after we get back as far as lifting, but he seems hesitant because he doesn't want to lift himself. I hope he doesn't decide to chicken out.

Just an example of what I've been eating, this is yesterday's food:
Breakfast: Oatmeal with Omega 3 enriched peanut butter, 350 calories
Morning Snack: Bag of sunflower seeds, 160 calories (this is generally a banana but the ones I bought are still very green).
Lunch: Hardboiled egg (2) sandwhich on low cal multigrain bread (250 calories), Light Yogurt (100 calories), Mozarella Cheese Stick (80 calories), Apple (100 calories)
Afternoon Snack: Two servings of beef jerkey ~150 calories
Dinner: Chicken wrap made with low calorie wheat wraps, onions, spinach and low fat/low cal mayo (very small amount) 400 calories, cucumbers with vinegar 50 calories.
Night snack: Pistachios (170 calories), and a two serving Whey Protein Shake (260 calories).

Clocks in around 2100 calories and I always feel full. The only liquids I'm putting in my body are water and green tea with splenda (1 cup in the mornings).

A doctor's appointment where the scale wasn't working correctly and then lying that the weight they showed was correct when I knew it was off by about 70lbs and saying that yes I'd been losing weight.

How the hell is this legal? The doctor lied to you about your dangerous weight (albeit he still said you weighed a dangerous weight.) How can he do that? How is this any different than seeing someone has really bad blood pressure then lying about it so you do not offend them?

Get a new doctor. I would never feel safe going to that doctor again. What if his blood pressure machine is not working? Would he lie about that instead of saying "hmm this thing is not working, sorry." The fact a medical doctor did something like that is mindblowing. What if you had an accountant and his spreadsheet was wrong so he said you had to pay way less taxes because he would rather do that than admit he entered the wrong formula?

Congrats by the way

edit

By the way, I want to give you extra props for using fatherhood as a motivational factor. You will be able to play basketball with your kid instead of sitting and watching because you can't walk 200 feet. I think there is nothing more sad than a dad who cannot kick the soccer ball or whatever with his son because he is too out of shape. I mean how goddamn depressing. Also, if you and your wife are healthy your kid will most likely be healthy as well instead of a huge fatty. When I see these kids who are too fat to run 100 yards at the age of 10 with their 350 pound parents I wonder why that isn't illegal. In my opinion it is no different than starting your kid smoking at age 8. Obesity actually decreases your lifespan more than smoking according to some British study I do not want to waste time googling for right now. Once people are adults and decide to be obese, I mean what can you do, but setting up your children for it from day one is negligence.

I would love to see some study that correlates weight of the parents with weight, health, and successfulness of their children (school wise and whatnot.) I would assume it exists.

It was one of the new nurses, she was having trouble adjusting the scale to go over 300lbs and I saw her mess up (she added the wrong size additional counterbalance I believe) and I could have corrected it but at the time I was scared of the truth and let it go.

Week 9 check in. My weight fluctuated wildly this week so my loss wasn't that great (less than a pound). That's discouraging, but I guess a loss is a loss.

My trip to Vegas is coming up and I hope I can at least maintain my weight through that trip. I have no intention of pigging out, it's just that my choices will be more limited. It will be a good test to see if my lifestyle changes stick when I go outside the bounds.

I know this isn't an update day, but today I'm finally into the 370s and really close to my first goal of 375, so I'm VERY excited.

I also just signed up for fitday, and set my goal weight of 299 lbs by 12/21/08 (the due date for our baby).

I hope that is achievable. Fitday is saying that's 2.53 lb per week.

To give some perspective, I was 268 when I was an offensive linemen in high school, which I consider to be the best shape of my life.

Week 10 weight in and I'm down to 377lbs, which is a total of 30lbs lost in 10 weeks and 3.6 lbs lost from last Saturday. I really pushed myself in the pool this week and am sore as hell all over and it was so worth it. Friday night to Saturday morning always seems to give me my biggest losses so there is alot to be said for getting 10 hours of sleep! =)

You're the man! What is your goal by your child's birthdate? Are you afraid of gaining weight as your wife does (I cannot remember the term for this but there is one.) If you can maintain during the later parts of her pregnancy you are the man for sure. Good luck. By the way, imagine if you get really in shape by the time your kid is 7 or whatever. Think of the look on his face the first time you show him a picture of you laying 400+

Ideally, I'd like to be under 300 by that time, but anything under 350 would be great.

Yeah, I know the term but can't recall. I am not worried about it, I've stuck to my lifestyle change even when she is having crazy cravings and eating thing I used to love in front of me. Like when she wanted steak hoagies coated in cheese and I still just had some chicken and cucumbers.

I went on holidays for 2 weeks and weighed myself when I got back, to find I had gained 2kgs (or 4.4lb). Over the course of 2 or 3 days my weight returned to my pre-holiday weight as I believe due to the hot climate of my holiday destination that I had increased my water weight significantly by consuming lots of water.

Don't write off that result so quickly, you might find your results will even out in a few days.

I don't know if you're lifting yet, but once you start doing that expect the pounds to go up a bit initially (muscle weighs more than fat), but then really start shedding after that (muscle burns more calories than fat).

Keep kickin rear end and stick to it, I'm going to go ahead and call it now that you'll weigh 285 by that date. It's going to get easier and easier to do harder workouts and I'm confident your weight loss will only accelerate in the next 12-week period!

And don't get discouraged by the Vegas gain, things happen--just jump right back on the wagon. You've got W&W rooting for you, keep up the good work!

P.S. Seconding the lifting suggestion. Try the modified Starting Strength workout that seanmm whatever-his-name-is posted, or post in the adoption thread and have someone create a program for you, it'll do wonders for you.

Ask me about losing 200lbs, and becoming the Viking God of W&W.

Thanks for the support all, it really helps.

I weighed myself this morning, and I was back into the 70s (379.4) so I guess some of that weight was water retention. I didn't really drink much of anything in Vegas (or eat much of anything really) because of the humid weather made me feel bloated and slow so that probably had alot to do with it. I know on Tuesday I was dehydrated because I didn't want to have to use the airplane bathroom if I could avoid it.

I'm not yet lifting but I'm currently looking for someone to work out with me/spot me. I thought my brother was going to do it, but he backed out. I am going to ask a few of my friends if they'd be interested. If that doesn't pan out, I have the option of using the gym at work however it has a smith machine instead of a squat rack or bench so I've been avoiding it thus far.

Avenging Nun

Your Vegas gain could have been half water weight due to sodium. Even when you stick to protein in restaurants, they salt everything like crazy and baste meats in butter.

Excellent work! You've got a visible reminder of why you want to do this every day in your own home. Just think how great it will be to take that little bub to the park in a year by walking there instead of having to worry about getting too tired, going from bench to bench.

Week 13 check in. I've lost 6.4 lbs this week. I'm attributing some of that to water weight from Vegas, but this was an awesome week. I passed my first goal and am on to my second one of 350lbs. I hope to be there by September at the latest but am trying to get there before that.

Tomcat, I generally avoid the sun as much as possible. I get sunburned year round (ie when it's snowing), have a ton of moles and a family history of melanoma. When I do go outside, I have to use SPF 75 lotion. I'm not an albino though nor a ginger, just have really sensitive skin. =P
