Thanks to the awesomeness of Mr. Swoon, I am able to do a Let's Play thread for this great addition to the Shin Megami Tensei series. Digital Devil Saga is the most "jRPGish" spinoff so far, being more focused in story development than the other games. Cover: ![]() Wikipedia posted:Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga (デジタル・デビル・サーガ アバタール・チューナー, Digital Devil Saga - Avatar Tuner) is a PlayStation 2 role-playing game. It is a spin-off of the Shin Megami Tensei series of video games; the main difference between Digital Devil Saga and the main series is the focus on specific characters rather than summoning demons to fight alongside your party. The story to Digital Devil Saga is continued with its direct sequel Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2. Introductory Video (Viddler) Also on Youtube. My previous SMT LP threads: Shin Megami Tensei Shin Megami Tensei 2 Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army Cast: Serph: Main character. Apparent mute. His stat growth is determined by the player. Ice affinity. Weak against Fire. Heat: Not the main character. Stat developement determined by the game, favoring physical skills. Fire affinity. Weak against Ice. Gale: The Tactician of the Embryon (the character's tribe). Balanced stat growth. Wind affinity. Weakness against Electricity. Cielo: Craziest hairdo in the game. I think he favors luck. Electricity affinity. Weakness against AILMENTS (that is horrible in a SMT game), and thus almost never used. Argilla: Stat growth focused in magic (and thus, for a great deal of the game, a VERY HEAVY hitter). Earth affinity. Weakness against Wind. Her breasts bite. No, really. In this game, every level up provides 3 points to be distributed for Serph. It is your duty to choose what areas should be focused. Again, a balanced one would be best. And as the wikipedia quote said, there is a skill system that allows you to mix and match freely. It makes things easier. Unfortunately, the previously passive skills, such as resistances and nulled elements are now instead active skills, shields that need to be raised. Since I am not a masochist, I will be using a NewGame+ file, and that will allow me to retain all the mastered Mantras that were in the previous cycle. It is likely that the Mantra Grid will be filled by at least one character (Serph). I've been going through this game recently and it's a more forgiving Nocturne/Lucifer's Call in my opinion, mostly because you can swap out skills whenever you like outside of combat and removing the demon capture aspect means they can't throw as much at you...and I've managed to pretty successfully bend this game to my will based on things I've learnt from your previous threads. Looking forward to the indepth stuff I may have missed.

Oh don't you worry. Although they fixed several of the areas Nocturne is mean to you in, they still found... other ways to make the game challenging. And BTW Luisfe, once I was able to slap a Null Ailment or Null Attack on Cielo he really turned out to be not that bad of a character. He actually is supposed to put more of his stats in Agility, and his Magic is decent. Heat can go eat a dick though. Update 01: ![]() This is the title screen. I will be seeing this quite a bit. ![]() Once again, the same disclaimer. This time there is not a single time travelling Russian mad monk sent to assassinate the Japanese Emperor, but not doing anything of the sort and letting history be changed. Nope. Or any other sort of historical figure. No, because as you will see, this one is set... In the FUTURE. ![]() New Cycle. After finishing the previous cycle. As I said in the OP, this is to keep all the skills that were previously acquired. That'll make things much, much easier. This is better seen in VIDEO. Gaining Atma (viddler) What's up with the weird cat? (Youtube) ![]() ![]() This won't make sense for a good while. ![]() ![]() ![]() The biggest font is clearly distressed by the green font's statements. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Welcome to The Junkyard. A land of eternal rain, and a land of eternal battle. In the Junkyard, one must fight to survive. ![]() ![]() And there they are. These are the heroes of the story. The Embryon. The smallest Tribe in the Junkyard. They are all especial in a way. ![]() ![]() Argilla. Sniper. Her eyes are gray. ![]() Serph. Leader. He is putting a lens in his eye. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Notice. It is different. The lens said "Harly". It was clear as day. ![]() Harley. Leader of the Vanguards. Another of the Tribes of the Junkyard. We'll be seeing more of him later ![]() And this? ![]() ![]() What the hell is this... Egg? ![]() ![]() Heat sports a machine gun. ![]() And so does Cielo. He has a funny hairdo. ![]() Gale. He is the most serious one of them all. He is the tactician of the Embryon. ![]() ![]() Everybody but Serph is expendable. If the leader of a tribe falls, the tribe is absorbed by the victors. That is bad news for them. "Remember that."![]() Cue obligatory action scene. ![]() ![]() They all spring into action. ![]() ![]() Wait, what's that there? ![]() A... Cat? Whati s a cat doing in the middle of a battlefield? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Clearly, confusing Serph and allowing him to be blasted by explosive arrows. The cat will be important later. Much later. ![]() ![]() ![]() Serph carries a handgun. And he is able to hit targets like the aforementioned explosive arrows. He is a whiz with it. ![]() But, that might be a bit too much for him. Well, it was fun. He is dead. Goodby all. ![]() ![]() Orrrrr... Not ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() No, Serph is not speaking. It's Gale. "Remove the unidentified object at coordinates 2314 5873.Failure to comply will be deemed an act of war." ![]() "Remove the unidentified object at coordinates 2314 5873. Failure to comply will be deemed an act of war." ![]() Both sides have no idea what the hell that is. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Well. It doesn't say "You shall be as gods" ![]() ![]() ![]() VARNA. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Well, that's quite a way to start this, isn't it? The main character just became a God and started... Eating... Pfft, Strength is where it's at. At least in the sense of preventing MOTHERFUCKER WHY IS STRENGTH NOISE HUNTING SO GODDAMN IMPOSSIBLE in the future. Also, they capped the levels at 99 in this game instead of the hidden 255, presumably because there are enemies in this game that drop stat boosting items.

What's the grind like in this game? I'm tempted to pick it up, but I don't want something that's going to be too demanding. As much as I loved Nocturne, I don't think I'll ever be able to play it again for that reason.

There is some grinding, usually for a new healing spell before a boss. I had one big pixie farming break in the middle and that held me until Titania farming for the extra bosses. That's one disapointing thing about P3, there's no extra bosses.

As for Serph's eyes...you may have noticed that they're oddly empty and grey like everyone else's. I found it kind of unsettling, myself, when I first saw it. But grey is a very predominant color in DDS1 (with occasional splashes of bright color to even it out, so it's WAY better than Gears of War's ten thousand shades of grey.) Serphy wasn't quite a good leader starting off, was he? Argilla tells him that a leader is indispensible, and what's the first thing he does? Charge off into combat! I mention this in the previous thread but goddamn I am glad Serph has a name. Even if he doesn't say anything, people are still able to refer to him directly, unlike "Him" and "That Guy" from FFX/2 and P3. I'm probably going to sit this one out, as I'm currently playing this game. I'm having trouble making ends meet while still having everyone constantly learning new mantras. It's most frustrating when you're in the middle of a big dungeon, and you've got lots of cells but no way to get out and sell them. Still, it's a very cool game, and I'm sure this LP will be up to Luisfe's usual high standards.
