Swiss police launched a large-scale manhunt on Thursday for a retiree who shot and seriously wounded an officer following a dispute over the forced sale of his home.

Some 100 police officers, including SWAT teams and dog handlers, were deployed throughout the western city of Biel as army specialists used a helicopter equipped with heat detecting cameras to search for the man from the air.

Authorities warned the 67-year-old suspect was likely "armed and prepared to use violence".

The man had barricaded himself inside his house on Wednesday, opening fire at police with a rifle as officers tried to negotiate with him shortly after midnight, Bern regional police said in a statement. The gunman then fled unnoticed while police continued to besiege his home.

Parts of the city, which is about 30 kilometres northwest of the capital, Bern, were evacuated and some schools were closed.

Police also took up position outside a local government office amid fears the gunman could seek revenge for the fact that authorities had ordered his house sold.

In 2001, an unemployed man shot dead 14 people at a local parliament in the central Swiss city of Zug before killing himself.

Shootings are not uncommon in Switzerland, where gun clubs are popular and many men have army rifles at home as part of the country's tradition of military readiness.

The Defence Ministry estimates that there are about 2.2 million firearms in the nation of 7.5 million people. The independent Small Arms Survey puts the figure at between 2.3 million and 4.5 million.

Police said the wounded officer was in stable condition in a hospital after undergoing emergency surgery.

I got this gun of the internet and apparently the barrel had never been cleaned. The rifling and bore about an inch or two above the chamber are fouled bad. Been soaking and scrubbing for about three weeks with minimal success. The rest of the bore looks good. It is a Nazi stamped K 98 mauser. The gun is chambered in 22 K-hornet. The bolt band has been removed, so the bolt don't go all the way back for the short cartridge. The bolt face has been modified for the smaller cartridge. Action has some surface pitting, but not bad. I believe this barrel could be used if re chambered to a larger cartridge. Maybe could be cleaned with something else to remove the fouling. All I have is brake cleaner and Hoppe's # 9. I don't have a job right know, so I can't experiment with any thing. The gun does shoot. I shot it three times. Ask for more questions or pictures. Thanks.

I wasn't aware of what the picture was. I can see an SD with an ACOG being used for dog suppression from down the block, or even as a close range (less than 100 yard) sniping solution. They're certainly accurate enough, and 9mm does an okay job killing people.
