macdamon posted:This thing is actually pretty cool. I saw a video about it, and while it seems totally ridiculous in any normal tactical situation, the guy designed it specifically for use with extreme close-range urban fighting in lovely 3rd world countries etc. Its meant for the sort of place where you cant even have two guys standing side-by-side because its so tight. It would take a lot of practice to be good with it, because one of the features is that you can quickly snap between the different angles. Dunno if I would want to use it, but it seems like it could have its place.

bladernr posted:Not sure how I feel about that. On the one hand, I can imagine that not being very promising in wet weather, or if you're running for your life from Dude, those things were DESIGNED FOR WW1 TRENCH FIGHTING. And somehow they neglected to remember that there was going to be mud and dirt?!? The open mags sides would let all manner of dirt and mug get in the mags. On the off chance that this didn't cause the springs and follower to just say "gently caress you" and knock off for a cig then you had dirty casings. The Chauchaut, in addition to all its other problems, was a finnicky bitch that needed to be kept hyper-clean inernally to function. Too much fouling from powder would cause it to jam. I bet you can imagine how it reacted to grit and mud inside the chamber, deposited from muddy, dirty bullets. I saw an interview with an old American first world war vet once. It was fairly recent (mid 90s?) - at any rate the guy was something like 98 years old. He was asked about the Chauchaut and if it was really as horrible as everyone said it was. His comment was something along these lines: "It was a terrible gun, absolutely horrible. We all liked getting issued them, though, since you could break it down and make a half decent still out of its parts and a few old kettles." It was a gun that people preferred to make trench hooch with rather than use in combat, and this in a war where a fully auto LMG was about the most badassed thing you could possibly want.
