No matter what you believe, I don't believe in you.

I've heard that at the very start of Vietnam, there was similar unfair negative sentiment towards the M1911A1, since a lot of them being issued were WWII surplus already in bad shape. How prevalent was that really? All the 'Nam vets I've met had nothing but good things to say about the 1911. Then again, they were all draftees and thus came in a bit later.

American planes, full of holes and wounded men, took off backwards from an airfield in England. Over France, a few German fighter planes flew at them backwards, sucked bullets and shell fragments from some of the planes and crewmen. They did the same for wrecked American bombers on the ground.

I think there was a big difference between what actual soldiers got and what, for example, the National Guard got. My uncle was in the Kentucky National Guard for 69-73 or so and he's mentioned more than once that only about half their pistols even worked, and those that did were so badly shot out that they were basically minute of barn accurate.

When my dad was assigned to the 2ID back in 1990 as a TACP he said they all had 1911s that were WWII vintage. The army guys kept trying to steal the Air Force's M9's and radios.

Quick, someone engineer up some kind of ridiculously over complicated gas piston assembly to attach to the gas block and the back of that thing so when you fire it slams forward impaling whoever's at the receiving end!

I've gotten a chance to play with one of those, and the ugly stock, from what I understand, is there so you can rotate it sideways, tuck it into the crook of your elbow, and still use it while opening doors or cuffing suspects or whatever. Also it makes it look like a fish. Remember that was designed for police in the late 60s, and was years ahead of it's time in concept and construction if not looks.

Firstly, the Chauchat was not in any way designed for trench fighting in World War One. At the turn of the century France had shown an interest in automatic weaponry, and before WWI broke out, there had been many investigations into adopting new, portable weaponry. The closest weapon they had at the time being the Hotchkiss Mle. 1909 GPMG. Looking to adopt a man-portable, light automatic rifle, they originally looked to the designs of Rudolf Frommer to create what would be France's first "Machine Rifle." However, as the committee that was drawn up to look into the development of the rifle began to buckle to internal politics and the poor logistics of the French high command, the weapon took a very different shape. Originally chambered for an intermediate cartridge, the French military insisted that it be adopted to utilize the already-obsolete 8mm Lebel round, facilitating the need for the half-moon magazine with its incredibly tapered rounds.

Now, the American Chauchat M1918 would quality for designed for trench assaults, but that's mainly an adaption. It was a noble concept at least, the magazine issue was fixed, using an almost-straight 16-round box magazine, which still had a small window for viewing rounds, but one that was covered up when the magazine was placed in the well. The foregrip was moved to the other side of the magazine, and the buttstock sawed-down, creating a fairly modern-looking assault weapon. Unfortunately, though the thought was in the right place, Gladiator once again hosed things up considerably, botching the chamber measurements and tolerances, creating a weapon that could not handle the operating pressures of the .30-06 round. Creating a weapon that fires itself apart is always an awesome idea. They were disposed of before the war even ended.

Just thought I'd address your post and expand on it a bit. I've got sort of a thing for WWI automatic weaponry

I can shed a little bit more info from my BIG BOOK OF GUNS:
