American planes, full of holes and wounded men, took off backwards from an airfield in England. Over France, a few German fighter planes flew at them backwards, sucked bullets and shell fragments from some of the planes and crewmen. They did the same for wrecked American bombers on the ground.

Freep posted:

Washington -- U.S. special forces working with the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan have ridden in cavalry charges against Taliban militia positions, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz said.

``In Afghanistan, a country we think of in somewhat medieval terms, our special forces have taken a page from the past, from the history of the horse cavalry with our soldiers armed with swords and rifles, maneuvering on horseback,'' Wolfowitz said in a speech last night.

The Pentagon has said in general terms that U.S. special forces are working with Northern Alliance units to improve their military tactics, coordinate among their factions and direct strikes by U.S. aircraft against Taliban targets.

Wolfowitz read excerpts from declassified field reports that describe some of the experiences of those special forces in battle.

``I am advising a man on how best to employ light infantry and horse cavalry in the attack against Taliban T-55 (tanks), mortars, artillery, personnel carriers and machine guns -- a tactic which I think became outdated with the invention of the Gatling gun,'' wrote one commando in an October 25 report, Wolfowitz said. ``They have done this every day we have been on the ground.''

``I have observed a gunner who walked 10 plus miles to get to the fight, who was proud to show me his artificial right leg from the knee down,'' said the report.

The dispatch relayed how Northern Alliance horsemen ``bounded from spur to spur to attack Taliban strong points -- the last several kilometers under mortar, artillery fire. They have killed over 125 Taliban while losing only eight,'' the commando wrote.

``And with that,'' said Wolfowitz, ``one of our amazing special forces members went off on a cavalry charge with a Northern Alliance commander.''

Guardian.co.uk

quote:

The thundering hooves of the first cavalry charge of the first and very asymmetric war of the twenty-first century rolled towards the Taliban lines south of the strategic city of Mazar-e-Sharif, writes John Sweeney in Khodja Bahudeen, northern Afghanistan.

Yelling blood-chilling cries, the Afghan horsemen of the Northern Alliance raced through a gully, raising a storm of dust, firing their Kalashnikovs towards the enemy. It looked like a cross between the Magnificent Seven, the Charge of the Light Brigade and Carry On Up the Khyber .

The horses swirled around in a Jacuzzi of dust while the commander screamed orders through a crackling walkie-talkie. Then the Northern Alliance troops of General Abdul Rashid Dostum dismounted and surged towards a hilltop village held by the Taliban.

One fighter, showing reckless bravado and zero common sense, stood etched against the skyline, blasting away with a machine-gun with tripod mount held at the level of his midriff.

Sporting a magnificent turban, he looked half-Terminator III, half Hilda Ogden from Coronation Street. Others took pot-shots with rocket propelled grenades, egged on by the commander.

Then the fighters were in the village, banging off shots around walls made of mud and straw, before capturing the main Taliban base on the hill.

They gathered round, silent in victory, showing off what they had captured: a 'Pika' heavy machine-gun, a mortar tube and an anti-aircraft piece, complete with gunner's seat.

To make sure that everyone knew that it was the cavalry which had won the day, someone had tethered his horse to the anti-aircraft gun.

Time Magazine

quote:

In the dead of night, horses poured from the hills. They came charging down from the craggy ridges in groups of 10, their riders dressed in flowing shalwar kameez and armed with AK-47s and grenade launchers. In the Kishindi Valley below, 35 miles south of the prized northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, the few Taliban tanks in the area not destroyed by American bombs took aim at the Northern Alliance cavalry galloping toward them. But the 600 horsemen had been ordered to charge directly into the line of fire. "If you ride fast enough, you can get to them," an Alliance spokesman later explained. "You ride straight at them. The tank will only have time to get off one or two rounds before you get there." The rebels were told to leap on top of the tanks, pull the Taliban gunners out through the open hatches and kill them. The first land battle in the century's first war began with a showdown from a distant age: fearless men on horseback against modern artillery. America's money was on the ponies.

They won. According to accounts given to Time by Alliance officials, 3,500 rebels serving under Uzbek warlord Rashid Dostum, 47, pushed the Taliban out of Kishindi with a 16-hour assault that left 200 Taliban and an unknown number of Alliance troops dead. To the west, forces loyal to Ustad Atta Mohammed, another Alliance commander, lost 30 men in a barrage of Taliban tank fire but seized the outlying village of Aq Kuprik.
