The rule of thumb for 5.56mm effectiveness is generally considered to be a velocity of greater than 2700 feet per second when it hits the target. Below that, the bullet may yaw, but the force isn't great enough to cause the bullet to break apart at the cannelure, at least not with enough energy to cause drastic fragmentation. That drastic fragmentation is what makes the bullet "effective."

Out of a 20" barrel, 55- grain M193 bullets are "effective" to about 200 meters. Out of a 16" barrel, it's maybe 150 meters. Out of a 14.5" barrel, it's about 100 meters. Out of a 10" barrel, it's more like 50 meters. 62-grain bullets, being heavier and having less muzzle velocity, are considered effective at shorter max distances. If I remember correctly, a 62-grain M855 bullet falls below that 2700 FPS threshold at about 15 meters when fired from a 10" barrel.

Rules of thumb, to be sure, but good to keep in mind.

Bipods are ok but forgrips are not. If you have a forgrip on a pistol length weapon it turns it into an AOW, which would require a tax stamp.

And I know the grippod in that picture is in bipod mode, but I wouldn't want to try to explain that to an ATF ninja.

I think it's unnecessary and kind of stupid, but not nearly in the same league of cruelty as spearing something to death by hand. You can aim a bow and be reasonably sure where the shot will impact, and most hunting bows have some serious power behind them. It's not unreasonable to expect a clean, relatively quick kill with a bow.

I don't think you can make that assumption with a spear, and I don't think that's what the thread in question was about anyway. That thread was about a guy bragging about how he tortured and drowned a bunch of pigs when he had other, more humane options readily available.

Can you not read? He is using spears because it is more efficient then going after hogs with rifles because gunfire spooks 'em. And then he gets use out of the pig because there is less destroyed meat.

And prairie dogs:

http://www.unitedwildlife.com/AnimalsPrairieDogs.html

quote:

Damage and Damage Identification

Several independent studies have produced inconsistent results regarding the impacts of prairie dogs on livestock production. The impacts are difficult to determine and depend on several factors, such as the site conditions, weather, current and historic plant communities, number of prairie dogs, size and age of prairie dog towns, and the intensity of site use by livestock and other grazers. Prairie dogs feed on many of the same grasses and forbs that livestock feed on. Annual dietary overlap ranges from 64% to 90%. Prairie dogs often begin feeding on pastures and rangeland earlier in spring than cattle do and clip plants closer to the ground. Up to 10% of the aboveground vegetation may be destroyed due to their burrowing and mound-building activities. Overall, prairie dogs may remove 18% to 90% of the available forage through their activities. The species composition of pastures occupied by prairie dogs may change dramatically. Prairie dog activities encourage shortgrass species, perennials, forbs, and species that are resistant to grazing. Annual plants are selected against because they are usually clipped before they can produce seed. Several of the succeeding plant species are less palatable to livestock than the grasses they replace.

Other studies, however, indicate that prairie dogs may have little or no significant effect on livestock production. One research project in Oklahoma revealed that there were no differences in annual weight gains between steers using pastures inhabited by prairie dogs and steers in pastures without prairie dogs. Reduced forage availability in prairie dog towns may be partially compensated for by the increased palatability and crude protein of plants that are stimulated by grazing. In addition, prairie dogs sometimes clip and/or eat plants that are toxic to livestock. Bison, elk, and pronghorns appear to prefer feeding in prairie dog colonies over uncolonized grassland.

Prairie dog burrows increase soil erosion and are a potential threat to livestock, machinery, and horses with riders. Damage may also occur to ditch banks, impoundments, field trails, and roads. Prairie dogs are susceptible to several diseases, including plague, a severe infectious disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. Plague, which is often fatal to humans and prairie dogs, is most often transmitted by the bite of an infected flea. Although plague has been reported throughout the western United States, it is uncommon. Symptoms in humans include swollen and tender lymph nodes, chills, and fever. The disease is curable if diagnosed and treated in its early stages. It is important that the public be aware of the disease and avoid close contact with prairie dogs and other rodents. Public health is a primary concern regarding prairie dog colonies that are in close proximity to residential areas and school yards.

Soil erosion, infrastructure damage, and spreading the loving plague.
