You know, I actually thought about that a bit after posting it, and I realized I had probably used it incorrectly -- dissonance meaning the feeling of unease, not the steps taken to ameliorate it. I decided something along the lines of "mental gymnastics" would have been more precisely what I meant. The rule of thumb for 5.56mm effectiveness is generally considered to be a velocity of greater than 2700 feet per second when it hits the target. Below that, the bullet may yaw, but the force isn't great enough to cause the bullet to break apart at the cannelure, at least not with enough energy to cause drastic fragmentation. That drastic fragmentation is what makes the bullet "effective."

Out of a 20" barrel, 55- grain M193 bullets are "effective" to about 200 meters. Out of a 16" barrel, it's maybe 150 meters. Out of a 14.5" barrel, it's about 100 meters. Out of a 10" barrel, it's more like 50 meters. 62-grain bullets, being heavier and having less muzzle velocity, are considered effective at shorter max distances. If I remember correctly, a 62-grain M855 bullet falls below that 2700 FPS threshold at about 15 meters when fired from a 10" barrel.

Rules of thumb, to be sure, but good to keep in mind.

I handled a FAB grip that splits into a bipod. I found it 1000x more solid than the grippod. Guy had it on his M1A clone, he loved it. He locked the legs out, and stood on his rifle. He swore by it but I haven't ran one myself. But if you NEED a hybrid grip bipod, I'd go for the FAB.

I think it's unnecessary and kind of stupid, but not nearly in the same league of cruelty as spearing something to death by hand. You can aim a bow and be reasonably sure where the shot will impact, and most hunting bows have some serious power behind them. It's not unreasonable to expect a clean, relatively quick kill with a bow.

I don't think you can make that assumption with a spear, and I don't think that's what the thread in question was about anyway. That thread was about a guy bragging about how he tortured and drowned a bunch of pigs when he had other, more humane options readily available.

In addition, prairie dogs sometimes clip and/or eat plants that are toxic to livestock. Bison, elk, and pronghorns appear to prefer feeding in prairie dog colonies over uncolonized grassland.

Prairie dog burrows increase soil erosion and are a potential threat to livestock, machinery, and horses with riders. Damage may also occur to ditch banks, impoundments, field trails, and roads. Prairie dogs are susceptible to several diseases, including plague, a severe infectious disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. Plague, which is often fatal to humans and prairie dogs, is most often transmitted by the bite of an infected flea. Although plague has been reported throughout the western United States, it is uncommon. Symptoms in humans include swollen and tender lymph nodes, chills, and fever. The disease is curable if diagnosed and treated in its early stages. It is important that the public be aware of the disease and avoid close contact with prairie dogs and other rodents. Public health is a primary concern regarding prairie dog colonies that are in close proximity to residential areas and school yards.
