Yeah, I think Knoxx made a kit called the Sidewinder.

Are they any good? I had a chance to buy 3 for them for $50 a pop, but I didn't because I couldn't remember if they sucked or not. I know they are listed for much more on GB but I have never looked to see if its the same guy trying to sell one over and over again.

Yes, very true. I can only find it in restaurants and bars here, so it is priced beyond reason though.

Also, Carlo Rossi is still only $10 a gallon. That and a 2-liter of coke zero will get one through a many a dark night. Well, just one dark night usually, but it is a great comfort to me none the less.

Mine was totally reliable so long as it was clean. I could keep 15 shots in a 8" circle at 50' in pretty rapid fire. I would never carry the damm thing but it would be fine for a HD or trunk gun.

I do with someone made a slightly heavier version with a light rail on it.

Garand actions are ludicrously strong. Mr. J.C. Garand himself tested M1 actions to the point of destruction. He found that at 120,000 CUP (nearly 150K PSI), one lug would crack, but it would still function just fine with regular ammo afterward.

There's a company that will convert your M1 Garand to .458 Winchester Magnum. It has to be a reweld job on the receiver, though, and from what I read those are very hard to do well.

That was the guy I was thinking of. I have no idea of the quality of his work but god damm those things are ugly. I have no idea why cutting the forend off seemed like a good idea. It's still going to be a heavy gun so it's not like saving a few ozs will get you that much. I don't really need .458mag though, I would be more then happy with .375ruger which I assume would be a more simple conversion as it uses a .30-06 sized action. The idea of a 18" M14 in something like .338Fed or something like that is pretty appealing too.

Maybe I have small hands or something but felt recoil is worse with both rubber grips. The Pachmyr also clams open so there is a huge loving mold line right on the backstrap.

But then you have the sound of the action giving away your position to the game wardens Nazis.

I have no idea how shooting a smaller caliber through a larger can works out but I assume that making a integral suppressor is more or less the same amount of work regardless of caliber, assuming smiler chamberings. The main reason for going with .44mag is an already available magazine, .45colt wold also allow a heavier bullet but one would have to fabricate or modify a mag.

RareBrit posted:

I've a fairly broad experience of cans. One of the few things I love about UK gun law is that cans are fairly easy to get.

If the caliber is not too much smaller, then the only real difference will be caused by the difference in volume and pressure of the gasses. So, a can for a .243 will do the same job for a .223, .222 etc. There wouldn't be much to gained by making a specific can for .44 magnum, though I expect the muzzle report would be noticeably louder than for a .45acp.

The whole idea behind a suppressed .44mag is that the larger case will allow a much heavier bullet to be shot at the same or lower pressure then a .45acp. You can get 350g bullets for .44mag, even at 1000fps that is going to hit pretty damm hard.
