I believe they are covered with spines that break off at the slightest touch and itch and burn and generally make you wish you didn't have skin.

My friend accidentally set his hand down on a caterpillar similar to this while we were hiking. (Not in the rainforest though.) We were about 20 miles from the nearest road and we didn't have anything with us to treat it besides neosporin. His hand was really swollen by the time we got him to the hospital.
