Gah to ordering online. Last week I found a cory cat breeder who needed to move some stock fast and clear out his fry tanks for new breeders. He offered me some dirt cheap cories, wholesale pricing or better. I bought a ton of them, a good lot for the fish club I'm a member of, and some for me. Albino and regular bronze, plus corydoras melanotaenia, which looks VERY MUCH like the normal bronze. So I open up the 2 boxes today and find some 35 bags of unmarked cories. Now, the albinos are easy to classify, but I have 30 bags of green cories that all look the loving same, and the people who bought them don't want bronze when they ordered melanos, and vice versa. No one wants to gently caress up their breeding with hybrids. I've contacted the seller and got no feedback other than "oh, my bad." And meanwhile I am stuck with two boxes of cories that I can't move, because the initial buyers all backed out---understandable, I suppose, when even they can't be sure what they are getting, and the seller said he doesn't remember if he mixed the bronze with the melanos in each bag anyway. I don't have room for over 90 cories. They're still in their bags and I have no clue what to loving do, save hope they make it another day and take them to a pet store for credit. The fact I have to eat all the shipping costs pisses me off to no end. Yeah, the buyers and club members could be more understanding, but the goddamn breeder couldn't take the time to write an A or M on any loving bags for ID.

Cowslips Warren posted:Gah to ordering online. Sounds like just about every group buy for anything organized over the internet (or by any other means I guess). Sucks, hope the fish make it! What do you all think about water clearers(sp)? When I had my tank at my apt the tank was almost always crystal clear even with lots of plants growing. When I moved back home for a couple months the water color turned to poo poo. Cloudy and kind of yellow. The paramiters are fine, PH, Nitrites, Nitrates and all that poo poo are just as perfect as they were before but the water is ultra grody. I've always read that water clearers shouldn't be used and that the root of the problem should be found first but I've tried everything from removing plants, testing water every other day, different light cycles, running the water through a Britta (worth a shot...right?, I change the water 70% once a week so I know its clean and nothing helped. A couple drops of that water clearer cleaned it up within the hour and the water looks as good it ever has. Does anyone have any other ideas of how to treat this problem naturally?

The fish are fine so far. After a dozen emails and PMs, the seller only said "oops, he's pretty sure he sent me both species but isn't 100% sure." So some $100 later, I have a small setup for all the unwanted cories and am going to try and sell them to a local pet store as mixed, species unknown, cories. I am just so loving pissed at this guy, who's made no attempt to fix this and doesn't seem bothered at all that his fuckup has cost me more than the loving money I spent on the fish. I even offered to send the loving fish back to him, on his dime, and no reply. No way am I paying for these guys to go back on his mistake.

So I've noticed my crypts and sword leaves are turning brown after a few days in the tank now. I think I read somewhere online about how places ship them with the leaves trimmed off because they tend to die off when planted and they're better off growing from the stems. Should I monitor them or just trim them off from the leaf base and let them re-grow?

rear end Crackers! posted:I know this is a defense mechanism for them, the "oh poo poo I'm gonna be eaten run away!" defense, but it bothers me to know they're trapped and will eventually die in there. I have a few plants, one specifically made for baby fish to hide in, and yet they seem to prefer the gravel. Any suggestions on how to save my kamikaze fish? Well, if you really want to save them then do so. Do you have an extra aquarium or hospital tank that you could house the fry for about a month? Even a cheap 1-2 gallon with an air pump from the pet store will suffice. If you want, you could check if the pet store sells small breeder tanks. There are different types but they look something similar to this: ![]() The pet store may have some extra ones they want to get rid of, so ask. It's an annoying process but if you really want to do it then here goes! What I usually do is temporarily move the adult fish into an empty tank (or a really clean bowl/tupperware). They'll be in there for less than 30 mins so they won't die on you. Just fill it up with water from the aquarium. Remove all of the plants and large decorations in the tank and put them aside. Net any fry that are swimming around. Next, carefully take out some of the gravel and catch the trapped fry. Concentrate on the fry you can see first. Place the fry in a separate bowl from the adult fish. I usually count them as I net them just to keep track. When you're satisfied, place the decorations and the adult fish back. Then move the fry to the breeder tank or the small aquarium. Feed the fry finely ground flakes 2-3 times a day. When they are about a month old they'll be too large to be eaten. It's safe to let them be in the large aquarium. Again, if this seems like too much, just let nature take its course. Hope it all makes sense!

Was in my local petstore in the UK and saw this for 89 pounds: http://www.hagen.com/uk/aquatic/addinfo/fluval_edge.cfm Looking at the brochure, this thing holds 23 litres (6 US Gallons) and shows pictures of 3 or 4 full size goldfish swimming around. This thing is seriously small when you actually see one, I can only hope that the price puts people off.

Gather 'round children, it's picture time! First up we have the fearsome Snowball/Inspector Pleco, L102 (at about 3" right now): ![]() Next and last we have my singular Yellow Lab (about 1"): ![]() The Yellow Lab is a temporary addition. I got it from a friend who has a breeding group just to see how it would fare in my tank. So far it's been getting along with everyone and growing quickly. Once it hits 2-3" i'm probably going to take it back to the family I tore it away from. I've been wanting an Inspector Pleco for months, and finally broke down and picked one up. Aside from a little bit of fighting with the Clown Pleco on the first day it was in the tank, it's been doing great.

Thanks for the pleco pics , love them . I recently bough two bristlenose plecs at about one inch long and in about two to three months one has grown to 4 inches and the other to 2 inches , would one be a male and the other female , i'm not sure ?? Also I have learn't cucumber is crack for plecos , man mine latch on within a minute of me putting it in the tank , they are absolutely mad for it and the clown loaches love it as well , lucky it's so cheap . Thanks for the pics and advice in this thread from everyone it has certainly helped me setup and maintain my 180 liter ( 40 gallon ) tank over the last 9 months :-)

I really really wish I didn't shake like Michael J. Fox so I could snap some decent pictures of the bazillion guppies I have to share. They're not exactly super fancy fish, but I do have a few with some really neat colors coming in and I love em all. Now if only I could single out the males without waiting to see which one starts chasing my known females. Then population control wouldn't be such an issue.

One month old 60 litre aquarium. Going to be mostly keeping platies, guppies, bronze cories and maybe a centre piece fish pair that I haven't decided on yet. I'm hoping for an endler hybrid population explosion soon! After this it'll be time to drag the 180 litre out of the shed and get it set up. Tank distance view, a mixture of live/plastic plants. I recently got my planted tank up and running and almost fully stocked with fish. I converted it over from a cichlid tank to a planted to community tank because I wanted a change and because ever since I went cichlid I was having red/brown algae issues, I was guessing due to the higher ph and hardness. After about a month in this tank it's starting to appear again, on my plants, glass and some of the rock. I'm about to do a water/filter change and clean it up a bit and this weekend I plan to add in a couple of plecos of some kind. Does anyone know if there are specific types I should look for. I had two different ones in my cichlid tank but both of them didn't help control it at all and hid 90% of the time. Are some algae eaters better at maintenance than others? Right now I just have a yo yo loach and 6 small tetras so I definitely have room in my tank for some algae eaters. Any recommendations?

Also, I was planning on posting this up over at plantedtank, but I thought you all might get a kick out of it. Had a small case of hair algae show up on the tips of my long leaf plants. After reading how people were spot dosing Excel on BG and other nasty poo poo, I tried it. Put 3ml of Excel in a syringe, turned off the filter and spread it around the hair, turned off the light for 15 minutes and then powered the filter back on. Woke up this morning and there is no more hair algae anywhere. Amazing.

Well, here's a weird issue. Since I moved all of my fish from a 10 gallon to a 29 gallon about 4 months ago, my 10 gallon has been sitting around, lights off, filled about a third with water, and no filtration. The only stuff in there is the old substrate, and a clump of Java moss. Today, I decided I could use that as a cherry shrimp hatchery, so I turned on the light to encourage some moss and algae growth, and I noticed a little particle moving around. I didn't think much of it, but then I realized the water has absolutely no movement, so I took a closer look. It was a tiny little bug thing. I have no idea what it is. I got my face real close to the glass, and I am noticing the things swimming all over the place. They are WAY to tiny to take a picture of. Has anyone ever seen anything like this in a fresh water tank, or have any clue what I can be dealing with?
