He was an irresponsible musician who had dreams of becoming a rock god despite the fact that that ship had sailed long ago, and he was so brow-beaten that he was a husk of himself. He had a lot of the same intonations and stuff as Michael, but I think that's more Bateman than the character.

For those fans of both Mystery Science Theater 3000 and AD, there's a nice little reference in the RiffTrax version of a Star Trek fan film ("To Serve All My Days") they riffed on. Klingon officer (to "Kirk"): Have you never seen a magician's trick? Kevin Murphy: "Like the great Gob Bluth?!?"

Can someone tell me what Gob says to the employees when he's warning them to stay away from his sister at the company party? It starts out with something like no loving and no sucking and then gets lost in the bleeps. Edit: Also, what are your top 5 episodes to show people who have never seen the show to get them hooked? Some of my favorite episodes have too many inside references that would leave the AD non-regular scratching his head. Leviathan fucked around with this message at Mar 11, 2009 around 20:02 |

I just really got into the show lately, been watching about 1 episode a day for a month or so now. It had always been a show I kept on the burner knowing it was good, watched an episode here and there but now I really have an appreciation for it, sadly it's going to end in a few episodes (just finished Ocean Walker). As much as Charlize's story arc did approach shark jumping territory, she was still cute a button (I'd marry the gently caress out of retarded Rita anyday) and it's still some of the best stuff that was on tv. I know I'm not the first goon to say it but it's unfortunate that Seth McFarlane's kinda worn out the good will the internet gave Family Guy considering its chartgraph of quality shows a much sharper curve than Simpsons in a fraction of the time, meanwhile he's still getting loads of attention while AD is scraping by for a movie. That's not to say Family Guy ever stole any thunder from AD (hell I'm part of the problem since me and my brother bought the first couple FG dvds) but I'm so sick of disproportionate attention our society heaps on mediocrity while quality starves

Alan Smithee posted:That's not to say Family Guy ever stole any thunder from AD (hell I'm part of the problem since me and my brother bought the first couple FG dvds) but I'm so sick of disproportionate attention our society heaps on mediocrity while quality starves I'm not saying that Family Guy is the greatest show ever, but you need to recalibrate your scale for mediocrity. It's cool that you like AD, but let's not circlejerk. Family Guy is a good show that does tend to be better than other shows on television. There are shows far far worse than Family Guy, but you probably don't watch those so you don't count them. You're doing a thing that's done too often with media where it's like you're grading on a weird curve. A show like Family Guy that isn't the best show, really isn't anywhere near as bad as your average television show. Remember that there exist shows like Rock of Love, or Two and a Half Men, or According to Jim. Family Guy is specifically not a mediocre show because it's edgier. Truly mediocre shows are the sort of inoffensive sitcoms targeted at the largest possible audience. Family Guy is not that, and it needs to get points for that. You may not enjoy it currently, but you can't really say that it needs to be lumped into the same category as According to Jim. I just think in making your argument that you're forgetting how bad or mediocre television can be, and I understand why. It's more fun to talk about shows like Family Guy that are closer to the top than to talk about other shows that are smack dab in the middle. It's a situation where you're not realizing that even it's the worst of the best on television, that's still better than 80% of the stuff out there. AD was top shelf though. The intricate writing, casting, production, and acting just made the show stand out for every single episode all 3 seasons. I'll say it's the best sitcom I've ever seen on television. It drove the sitcom genre way forward after 40 years of mostly mediocre crap. All in the Family was edgier, timelier, funnier, and funnier than most stuff that gets shown on television today. It's a sad statement that only very few shows have been able to do as good or better than that when we've had hundreds of attempts since then. edit: I said funnier twice. I really like funnier.

See, I'm one of those mutants who likes new FG so much more than old FG. The old show was really funny but it was also a pretty bland traditional sitcom in a lot of ways, with a shitload of flashbacks thrown in. The new show is way more self-referential and meta, but with the added Achilles' Heel of not knowing when to stop a joke from dragging on for way too long.

Okay as much as I would like the derail to die, I feel responsible for bringing FG up. Anyway, I would have no issues with it still being on or even the Cavalcade of Cowmilking, if AD got even enough attention just to keep it afloat for a couple more seasons. I don't need Franklin plush dolls but I would buy a poster for Les Cousins Dangereux I never brought up FG to point the "blame," but merely to illustrate how I felt one creative mind could blow so much good will from fans after coming back from the dead. Even though his stock seems to keep rising, the story arcs are lazier and the jokes more edgy for the sake of edgy instead of cheeky. As for the FG love/hate bandwagon I've been on both commutes. With that said I'd like to end that discussion. Anyway, back to the topic at hand Jeffery Tambor holds acting classes on the 21st in LA. http://www.jeffreytambor.net/ I'd go personally but it's 300 pops and that's just way too much money to spend just so I can shake his hand while reciting catchphrases like a despicable goon. I did find this promo funny though, its design is like something straight out of the show
