I really think this is the underlying reason people become so enamored with the show once they give it repeat viewings. AD certainly didn't invent foreshadowing, but I'm pretty sure it's never been used to such effect on a sitcom before - or since.

I also think it's a big reason people who work in comedy and TV have such respect for it. The sheer amount of work that's required to write the type of multi-layered jokes and foreshadowing had to be enormous. I remember one of the cast mentioned in an interview that many of the staff writers quit after season two out of sheer exhaustion. It might be an exaggeration on their part, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit.

I would believe this. I think every line in Arrested Development has been exhaustively engineered to be as funny as possible and at the same time it flows together in a way that puts laugh track sit coms to shame. Not only that but I think every single joke in the series is laden with a visual joke, a double meaning, foreshadowing or a reference most of the time tied in with joke or plot at some other point. I have watched through the series 4 times now and I still find new jokes all the time, even more when I read episode summaries on Wikipedia.

But my favorite thing about the show has to be the actors and their characters. I wouldn't be able to choose between any of them, they all do their role so perfectly.

I doubt anyone in this thread can imagine GOB saying "Michael" in their head without laughing and yet to the bystander it means nothing.

The thing that cracks me up the most about this scene is just trying to figure out exactly what Tobias thought he was doing by lifting a full water jug off of one of those things.

I always figured he was moving the water cooler so he could technically spread "water cooler gossip" anywhere.

I think it's called "Exit Strategy". It's the one where Buster goes to Iraq with Michael to save Gob, they find the fake nuke, house full of Saddam impersonators.

Wiki page for the show does mention it.

# Set Dressing After Tobias comments on how "incredibly detailed" Hollywood shows are, he opens the cupboard to reveal that there is nothing in there apart from a Starbucks coffee cup and a kettle. George Michael opens another cupboard, which contains nothing but a Nature Valley granola bar.

* Ironically, all the other cupboards in the background appear to be quite well-stocked.

God reading wikipedia pages for episodes really shows how much you can miss.

quote:

No Scar It is revealed at the end of the episode that Achmed (the Saddam look-alike with the scar on his face) is in fact the real Saddam, and the Saddam on trial is a look-alike. This is hinted at by the fact that Achmed is fixated on the trial, with a sinister look on his face. He also complains that "I do a better Saddam than this guy. My Saddam would show his teeth." This also refers to George Sr.'s tendency to replace himself with his twin brother Oscar (hence I'm No Scar) to avoid capture and his personal infatuation with the pristine quality of his teeth.

Agreed, I also think it's one of the best episodes overall.
