Ever since I got to college I rarely finish games, but Abyss is one of the few exceptions I've made - once I made it past the maybe five hour barrier I was hooked. It really is an incredible game, and has a lot of the highlights of Tales Of games in general - namely characters that you can actually care about. I have trouble playing NON Tales games, now, because the characters aren't talking to each other enough. Some games have things like that - campfires in Breath of Fire 3, emotion events in Star Ocean 2 - but in most Final Fantasy games, the lack of dialog makes the characters seem empty (...which they are, but that isn't my point).

Cless Alvein posted:The biggest problem I had with the GBA port is the fact that the translation was so terrible. Cless Alvein somehow became Cress Albane. Don't really care if that is what it was supposed to translate to because Cress is retarded name. Beyond that they some how translated ,"Ragnarok" to "Kangaroo". How they did this, I have no goddamn idea. They cut out the opening song for some reason and the voice acting is pretty terrible and voice acting normally never bothers me. I've played through the SNES and GBA versions and currently playing through the PSX version when I have the time. I think I like the SNES one the best just for the DeJap translation. DeJap seems to have gotten it right in the fact that they had to change the script occasionally so that it made sense to the people who were now going to be reading it. Besides, I bet Arche really does gently caress like a tiget! I hope that answers your question.

So, I'm at the part in Vesperia where they reveal where the title is from - the brightest star in the sky, in their world. Are any of the other titles explained in their games? I always thought Abyss should have been called Symphonia, due to the music theme and lack of Abyss-ness for most of the game. Is Phantasia just a play on Fantasy?

A few questions: You should probably try to follow http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/929343/40529 Kouli's guide. There's a TON you can miss in this game, especially in regards to side-quests. Just follow the numbers in that guide (Sub Event #x, Sub Event #x+1, and make sure to get them all) and you should be fine. The extra boss's second appearance is farther on, near the part with the snowy town. I think that's a while later. Capacity Cores are NECESSARY to get a lot of the skills, as those are based on stat growth. They add bonuses, not change your growth. I don't know for sure if those lavender's pass over, but I think they do.

I've seen Tales of Abyss sitting in my GameStop's used section. Is it that much similar to Vesperia that I would like it? Yes. Although some posters disagree, I feel that they're pretty much equal in terms of complexity and storylines, and I'd go so far as to say that, once Abyss gets going (seven hours in) it has one of the best jRPG storylines around. Then again, I'm only fifteen hours into Vesperia, in the desert looking for a talking dragon thing, so maybe the plot epics up a bit.

I'm only halfway through Vesperia, but Abyss is still my favorites. Something between the character designs (different clothing per region like in Phantasia, nice hair, other small bits) and the huge amounts of character development make it a really great game to go through. That said, Vesperia makes great advances on the battle system (namely Judith) and I'm sure more things are coming later. I just got the flying mount, so maybe there's a ton more...

They could do things like the costumes easily enough, but I don't think they'd do a half-update any time soon. That said, we'd buy it for $20. Would that be worth their time more than someone buying it a second time on PS3? I wonder.

BurningCourage posted:Not only that, things like backstepping, normal attacks and the magic guard also took up your CC meter, but could also be used in combos. I think there was also a move that caused your character to home in on the enemy, regardless of their location. Not like Semi-Auto mode, you still retained full control with the move, but it could be used in aerial combos, such as if you knock an enemy into the air and wanted to get straight to them. The system had a huge amount of potential, and there are videos of people busting out huge combos and hitting enemies with infinite combos all over the place. ToD PS2 is also one of the only Tales game to let you use the final boss's Mystic Artes against him . It also let you have an entire party consist of one member 4 times over, in case you really like Kongman/Mighty Bruiser or something. Wow, that's pretty awesome. Tales of Graces you say? I tend to like the Kouske Fujishima-something characters more, but this makes it worth looking into.

Back in the day, that was just handled with cutscenes, and the skits were just for funny character silliness. I liked that a lot better because the stories in Tales games really aren't that interesting to me. I hope it changed in the PS3 version, because the 360 version had... almost zero skits in the final dungeon. I can only remember one, to talk about a boss. Symphonia had great fun skits, like the zero-G screwing around near the end.

HampHamp posted:Currently playing through Vesperia with a mate (I get to control the pipe smoking dog fortunately), lot of fun so far. The magic lens thing doesn't bother me, but the conditions for some of the sidequests ((early sidequest spoiler) such as the white haired guy who you have to visit in places you would NEVER return to during the normal course of the game) are retarded. We're actually using a guide for all sidequests, as we don't really have time to play through a 60-80 hour (presumably) game twice. I did the same... I don't entirely regret it, but I would skip some of the sidequests. In previous Tales, I did EVERYTHING because there was nice payback, such as the sauna and fun conversation at Namco Island. In Vesperia, there's far less fun party talk during these optional places, and the optional dungeon isn't story-relevant or really fun. IMO, that is.
